Quarantine: History and Memory of Site
How might the Xylotheque books we make
house and display the layers of memory,
myth and history to do with the Quarantine
Station at North Head?
Fat Colour, Rich Interiors
How might we capture interiors and still
life in a rich and dynamic manner,
focusing on bold colour, pattern and
form?
I Spy
How might we recreate a sense of
mystery and the nostalgic via
investigations of filmic genres and
periods such as Film Noir and German
Expressionism?
Paperclay Poppets
How might we apply our understanding
of the human form, as well as make
believe, in the paper clay dolls we make?
Description Quarantine: History of Site is a cultural and
structural frame exploration of the many
layers of history of the Quarantine Station
at North Head, a place of beauty and dark
histories. In this course students will be
making a collection of works in a book
format in response to an excursion to the
Quarantine Station at North Head.

A structural frame exploration of the use
of luscious, rich colour, texture and
pattern in watercolour painting. In
artmaking, students will re-create
luscious, rich interiors and still-life with
watercolours and Japanese washi paper.
Students will begin by drawing a set-up
interior and still-life using pencil and
watercolour paper. Students will learn
about the conventions of watercolour
painting so as to build colour into their
still life. As an ICT extension, students will
take photographs of a still life, and will
also use Instagram and filters, to create a
digital version of a luscious, richly
coloured still life. Students will use their
laptops or school Macs/PCs and
Photoshop filters and other tools to
create an image focusing on saturation,
cropping, patterns, etc.
In art historical and critical studies,
students will investigate a range of
traditional and contemporary artists who
A subjective and structural exploration of
avant garde film with a focus on the
genre of film noir and the detective film.
In artmaking, students will work in
groups to create a 3 minute film focusing
on filmic conventions such as narrative,
montage, lighting, symbolism, sound,
cropping, sequencing, etc. Students will
work with a range of props and objects
to create a crime scene and a sort of
who dunnit using film.
In art historical and critical studies,
students will investigate key avant-garde
film scenes such as the Odessa Steps
sequence in Battleship Potempkin, Alfred
Hitchcocks The Birds, the murder scene
in Psycho, and a range of other detective
scenes. Students will investigate these
films from the point of view of the
audience, as well as the structural frame
in terms of filmic conventions and
devices.
A subjective and postmodern frame
exploration of the practice of making
imaginative paperclay dolls in the folk-
art or crafting tradition. Students will
investigate the proportions of the human
body and will use exaggeration and
humour to create odd, whimsical and
imaginative dolls.

Artmaking

In artmaking, students will investigate the
natural and manmade landscape - students
will investigate the flora and fauna of the
site, and will investigate the shared
cultures, myths, meanings and memories
of the Quarantine Station. Students will
also research Indigenous history of the site
where there was the earliest contact
between Aborigines and the British.
Students will research the shared cultural
experiences and stories of the site via
drawings of heritage buildings, plants,
seeds, foliage, birds, etc.; photography,
A structural frame exploration of the use
of luscious, rich colour, texture and
pattern in acrylic painting. In artmaking,
students will re-create luscious, rich
interiors and still-life with cakes using
textured acrylic paint and paint medium
on canvas. Students will begin by
photographing and drawing a set-up
interior and still-life with cakes, focusing
on photographic tools such as
composition, focus, cropping etc.
Students will then use the photograph a
inspiration for an acrylic painting,

Students will work with a range of props
and objects to create a crime scene and a
sort of who dunnit using film.

In artmaking, students will use paperclay
and wire to create segmented folk-art
style dolls. Students will investigate the
proportions of the human form through
drawing, and will then apply this
understanding to their sculptural pieces.
However, students are also able to use
exaggeration, characterisation and
exaggeration to incorporate humour and
the satirical.

maps and text; rubbings of trees, graffiti,
and other textures, as well as collection of
leaves, seeds, etc. Students will then create
books/boxes based on the idea of the
xylotheque books, which are a type of
cabinet of curiosities. Students will
therefore use their understanding of
different genres of landscape art, including
western conventions of landscape and
Indigenous perspectives, as well as Joseph
Cornell and the Xylotheque books, as
inspiration for their works.
These books/boxes will house drawings,
photographs and other documentation put
together in the weeks after the visit to the
site.
students using acrylic paint on canvas to
capture bold rich colour, bright, oriental
style pattering, and rich, thick textures.
As an ICT extension, students will use the
raw photographic files to create a digital
version of the still-life with cakes.
Students will use their laptops or school
Macs/PCs and Photoshop filters and
other tools to create an image focusing
on saturation, cropping, patterns, etc.
Practice
Critical and
Historical
Studies

In art historical and critical studies,
students will investigate a range of
contemporary artists who create
interventions and installations within the
landscape, for example, Andy Goldsworthy
and Christo, as well as artists who have
investigated site as layers of history,
meaning and memory. The unit of work
will have a strong focus on Australian
history and storytelling, the unit itself
being representative of a 19th century
scientific voyage of discovery, the students
taking on the roles of keen gentleman
naturalists, artists and scientists.
In art historical and critical studies,

In art historical studies, students will
investigate the practice of artist Ron
Mueck.
