Hamlet Synopsis
The king of Denmark has died and his queen (Gertrude) has married his
brother (Claudius) within weeks. Prince Hamlet returns to the kingdom to
discover that his father's ghost has been seen by the castle guards at midnight.
Hamlet later approaches the ghost, which tells him that Uncle Claudius has
murdered him. Hamlet becomes emotionally distraught and, with the help of
his friend (Horatio), plans a play to see Claudius's reaction. Hamlet confirms
that Claudius is a murderer, scolds his mother, and scorns his girlfriend
(Ophelia). Ophelia goes insane and later drowns. Her brother (Laertes) then
wants revenge for his father's and Ophelia's deaths. Claudius persuades Laertes
to fight a duel with Hamlet (with a poisoned sword) and by the end of the
drama, all of the characters have died by various means.
