Choosing A
Linking Theme
For Your Book
Decide: Who in popular
culture would make a
great Hamlet? Think
books, television, sports
teams etc.
You might make a
Simpsons inspired cast,
or The Outsiders etc.
You may choose to mix
and match people from
different sources and
create your own unifying
theme (heavy metal, his-
torical poets, 80s Come-
dy)
Think carefully about
your choices as you will
need to explain and ex-
plore your motivations
Your theme write-up
should make clear con-
nections between your
theme and the themes in
Hamlet. (go beyond the
literal)
Collecting Quotes and Connecting Themes
Six to Eight Thematic Sections
(5-7 quotes in each)
1. Your collected quotes
will be sorted into 6-8
thematic categories
2. The categories will each
be originally titled with a
theme statement of your
creating based on a theme
present in Hamlet
Ex: Women/misogyny
(topic)
Theme Statement: Women
lack control of their sexuali-
ty and can not be trusted
frailty, thy name is wom-
an(1.2.146)
3. Each theme statement will
be on a section divider
that features a thematical-
ly linking image connect-
ed to your books theme
and a matching poetic
device found in the play
(metaphor, hyperbole,
simile etc.)
4. The poetic device selected
should encapsulate the
theme and not be repeated
in the quotes section
5. Each quote used will be
cited correctly
