PROJECT:
BE Project : STABILIZATION OF SOIL BY USING FLY ASH
Project Description : Safe and economic disposal of industrial wastes and development of
economically feasible ground improvement techniques are among the important challenge being
faced by the Engineering community.
In this investigation, an attempt has been made to study the possibility of
utilizing fly ash, one of the hazardous industrial wastes for stabilization of a low compressible soil
& a high compressible soil, Since bulk utilization of fly ash is feasible in the case of geo technical
applications like construction of embankments, earth dams, highway and air field pavements. For
this purpose two soils were obtained locally and fly ash in different proportions to study the effect
of fly ash on index properties, compaction characteristics and CBR strength.
The test results indicate that there is an optimum fly ash which yields
maximum reduction in plasticity index, optimum increase in maximum dry density and CBR value.
The optimum fly ash is about 10% for soil. The observed changes are explained in terms of
replacement and filling effects of fly ash. The test results indicate that soils can be effectively
stabilized using fly ash, a hazardous waste material which is being produced in large quantities by
thermal power stations.
