Saint Joseph Parish Mission Statement:
The faith-filled parishioners of Saint Joseph Catholic Church of Arma, in union with the Blessed
Trinity of the Father, Son and Holy Spirit, value tradition and prayer. We are committed to strong
leadership, responsive community service, and forming caring, welcoming, intimate relationships
with our fellow brothers and sisters. We seek to become a more diverse, vibrant, active church
family.

Notes from the Pastor - Happy Mothers Day to all our mothers! On this occasion it is noteworthy to
recall the words of Saint John Paul II: The Creator grants the parents the gift of a child. On the woman's
part, this fact is linked in a special way to a sincere gift of self. Mary's words at the Annunciation Let
it be done to me according to your word" - signify the woman's readiness for the gift of self and her readi-
ness to accept a new life. (Saint JPII, Mulieris Dignitatem, No 18) May God bless all our mothers al-
ways and may they be always open to the gifts of the Holy Spirit for guidance and strength!
Last Sunday we had our May Crowning with our PSR kids. God blessings be upon them always and
may they allow the Holy Spirit to guide them always! We also thank all our children who came to our
Sunday PSR classes, their parents for supporting and encouraging their kids to attend, and our catechists
as our PSR School Year 2013-2014 comes to an end last Sunday. Special thanks and blessings to our
catechists: Lucinda Bonine, Lindsey Waterman, Ariel Ashbacher, and Aubri Ashbacher. It was another
fruitful year!
This Saturday, May 10
th
, we also recognize our Graduating High School Seniors who are not only mem-
bers of Saint Joseph, but has been our Altar Servers for so many years: Andrew Ashbacher, Joseph
Polhlopek, and Noah Popejoy. We are proud and happy of their success. We congratulate them and their
parents. May God continue to bless them with good health and may they always allow Gods grace to
guide them in their lives. We apologize for the past years we have not done a High School Seniors
Recognition. I hope and pray our High School seniors and parents who graduated in the past years will
understand. Somehow, we have to start somewhere. We will try to do this recognition every year with
the help of our parish council!
As you all know, I am set to leave for my trip to the Philippines this Monday. I am excited to see my
family again 3 brothers and 2 sisters, 22 nephews and nieces. At the same time I am sorry to leave you

The Influence of a Mother
A little girl, reared in poverty in the backwoods of Virginia, was destined
for a brief and unhappy life, yet she grew up to bear a child whose career
more than fulfilled her highest dreams for him. Born at Pattersons Creek,
Va., in 1784, at age 12, she went to live with her aunt and uncle not far from
home and there, she had an opportunity to attend school and she made the
most of it. She learned to read and write, a skill most folks at the time did not
possess. She was also skilled at needlework. It was said that she was tall and
nice looking and gifted with a good singing voice. Her name was Nancy
Hanks. A young apprentice came to the town, wanting to learn the trade of
carpentry, so Nancys uncle, Joseph Hanks took him into his shop. The
young apprentices name was Thomas Lincoln. For times sake, well skip
the details and say that the two young people were married in June of 1806
and set up housekeeping there. Thomas couldnt write his own name until his
ambitious wife taught him. However, he lacked the drive for knowledge that
she held and it disappointed her. He made up for it with his drive to become
an accomplished carpenter.
He and his bride moved to Elizabethtown, Kentucky, where his family
would reside for eighteen months. Thomas and Nancy had their first child,
Sarah, there in 1807. The next year, Thomas bought a farm 5 miles south of
Elizabethtown and their second child, a son, Abraham, was born there in
1809.When Sarah and Abraham could be spared from their chores, they went
to a log schoolhouse. The Lincolns lived comfortably at this time. A third
child, Thomas, was born, but died in infancy. Nancy seemed drawn to Abra-
ham, sensing that he would require all the knowledge that she could muster
for him. Often, theyd understand each other without words. She felt in him
her own hunger for learning. Around 1816, Thomas decided to move the
family to Indiana where a man could buy land directly from the government;
besides, in Kentucky, slavery was allowed and he didnt believe in it. They
arrived in Indiana in winter and shelter was needed; therefore, Thomas and
his son, Abraham, set about building a log cabin for the family, which they
moved into in 1817. For a few months, they lived in a three-sided structure
made of logs. Thomas taught his son how to swing an ax, for Abraham was
tall and had the necessary strength to swing the tool.
Life became happier for them on the farm, but suddenly, in late 1818, Nan-
cy Hanks Lincoln, then 34 years old, fell ill of an epidemic disease known in
the region as milk sickness. This illness was caused by poison in the milk
of cows that had eaten snakeroot. In 7 days, Abrahams mother was dead. He
helped his father build her coffin out of green lumber and he helped to bury
her in a forest clearing. The lack of a funeral service distressed 9 year old
Abraham and he wasnt content until a traveling preacher conducted a burial
service over his mothers grave seven months later. His mothers influence
stayed with him always, and was expressed in the most famous of all epi-
taphs: All that I am or hope to be, I owe to my angel Mother. He remem-
bered his mothers unqualified love for him long before anyone had ever
heard of Mothers Day.
Honor your Mother today, whether it be by personal contact, or if de-
ceased, a visit to the cemetery. She carried you in her womb and, regardless
of hardships or misunderstandings, she deserves your reverence today. Hap-
py Mothers Day to all Mothers! Article by Marcel Normand
