JUNE 2014
Committed to God, Church and Community
A Monthly Publication of the Canaan Baptist Church

Grace and peace unto you.

"Then I told them of the hand of my God which was good upon me...."- Nehemiah 2:18 (KJV)

With joy, I am delighted to report the Arise and Build Capital Campaign has been well
received by our congregation. The personal investment that so many have already made to the
campaign is overwhelming. We are advancing right on schedule!

Currently, there's a profound faith-filled attitude prevailing throughout this campaign's
journey. As a result, the understanding and generosity of honoring our pledge has set the tone
in laying the foundation of a successful campaign and secured future for our church. We have
come this far by faith!

Canaan, we are rising to the challenge before us. Earlier this year, we were blessed with the
good news of a loan from the American Baptist Extension Corporation. This will enable us to
complete the Phase 2 expansion with little or no debt. With the Phase 2 campaign in progress,
we have already received $994,744 in pledge commitments over the next three years. In
addition, there is a genuine spiritual depth within our congregation which shows how far God
can take us when we are willing to step out in faith. His hand is upon us!

Furthermore, as we prayerfully consider this joyous opportunity to completion, we must
reflect on God's blessings and our deep commitment to the church, community and ministries.
At the very beginning of this campaign, there were those who were hesitant about the path we
were taking. Nonetheless, after seeing the results from the First-fruits Offering and the
positive membership support from the congregation, like Nehemiah, I am convinced God will
honor our faithfulness.

Saints, we are witnesses of the powerful way God works in the life of our church.
Enthusiastically, we have listened to God's call and drawn closer to Him. While our sense of
unity concerning the vision is tremendously increasing in our church, we must remain
committed to the task at hand. Our work is just beginning, but our victorious spirit continues
to soar.

In conclusion, when God is moving within the hearts of His people to significantly do
something for the Kingdom, He will make a way. His presence will continue to guide this
spiritual journey successfully with every gift and pledge given. We are so grateful to God and
trust in Him completely. He loves us all. May the blessing of God's Spirit continue to nourish
us in the days to come.

Arise and Build!

Canaans Mission Statement
An urban Baptist Church which
serves as a vanguard of liberation,
faith and empowerment through our
Christian witness. Canaans
mission is to do ministry for the
Master through the five-fold
ministries of Discipleship,
Fellowship, Service, Worship and
Evangelism.
Acts 2:42-47

Canaans Core Values
Congregational Intimacy
(1 Corinthians 13:13)

Salvation For The Lost
(St. John 3:16)

Applied Christianity
(James 2:14-20)

Impact the Human Condition
(St. Luke 4:18-19)
Thank you for worshipping with us at Canaan Baptst Church. The
corporate life of this congregaton is the true witness of the vitality of our
faith. While the high point of our Christan service is to be found in the
experience of Sunday worship, what we do from Monday to Saturday,
speaks volumes about Canaans commitment and dedicaton to Christ
and our community.

Canaan is a family where all of us are saved sinners hammering out our
salvaton under the auspices of Gods amazing grace. We are structured,
but not so structured as to prevent the powerful work of the Holy Spirit
to impact the life of our in-reach and outreach ministries. We are
organized, but not so organized to prevent the organism, which is the
Church, from bearing full life.

We Welcome You!
Dr. Christopher Alan Bullock and First Lady Dr. Debbie Bullock

The ministries
in Canaan vary
and many
require that
their
participants
live up to a certain standard. The Deacon Ministry
at Canaan is one of the few ministries that elects its
members based upon their commitment to the
church and their ability to model the word of God as
well as share it. Deacon Henry Carroll leads this
ministry at Canaan ensuring that it remains on track
in not only the service of the church but also the
service of the Pastor. On Sunday mornings the
Deacons are on the front line welcoming those who
are new to the church. The Deacons are also those
which lead the congregation during worship inviting
people to pray at the altar during and after service.
And, most importantly, it is the Deacon Ministry at
Canaan which goes out into the flock of congregants
and ushers in those wanting to commit themselves
to Christ. Matthew 23: 11 says that the greatest
among you shall be your servant. This verse
exemplifies what it is to be a Deacon. Through their
commitment to Christ and their willingness to serve,
the Deacons of Canaan have been elected to serve
the congregation in the most fundamental ways. It
is through this ministry that the members of Canaan
are able to see what true commitment to faith and
church look like. It is important that we hold these
members of our church and the elected of this
ministry to a high esteem, for it is their position,
service, and commitment to Christ which we all
must strive for.

Father's Day has a very interesting history embedded
in it. The thought for creating a day for children to
honor their fathers began in Spokane, Washington.
The idea of having a Father's Day came to the mind of
Sonora Smart while listening to a Mother's Day sermon
in 1909. After the death of her mother, she along with
her siblings was raised by her father, William Jackson
Smart. Sonora wanted to tell her father how special he
was and what role he played in her life. She wanted to
honor her father's parental sacrifices that he made for
his children. She wanted him to know what a
courageous, selfless and loving man he was. Since
Sonora's father was born in June, she chose to hold
the first Father's Day celebration in Spokane,
Washington on the 19th of June in the year 1910.
The National Father's Day
Committee was formed in
New York City in 1926. A
Joint Resolution of
Congress recognized the
Father's day in 1956 and in
1966; President Richard
Nixon established a permanent national observance of
Father's Day to be held on the third Sunday of June.
Thus, Father's Day was born in memory and
appreciation by a daughter who believed that her father
and all other fathers should be honored with a special
day just like mothers are honored on Mother's Day.
A day to celebrate fatherhood and male parenting,
Father's Day is observed on the third Sunday in the
month of June in most countries around the world
June 15th this year. The occasion gives an opportunity
to express love and affection to all fathers and fatherly
figures. The day helps in strengthening the father-child
relationship all the more. Just like a mother is regarded
as the sole nurturer of a child, the father helps in the
development and emotional well being of the child. A
father plays the role of a guide, supporter, motivator
and protector in any child's life.
Happy Fathers Day
