4.3 Livelihood Promotion through Dairy Farming
Introduction

Dairy Activities have been instrumental for rural change assuring employment and income for
beneficiaries through out the year with low risk. !t has been observed that continuous drought in the
state has led to increase in dairy activity among the poor.

The project envisages improving the livelihoods of all poor milch producers of the state by proper
arrangement of backward and forward linkage activities with community participation and ownership.

The staff of vOfNNS (Community Activist f Community Coordinators) will sit with the community
members and after analyzing the gaps, shall prepare a time bound dairy plan at vO f NNS level
incorporating the requirement of different support services from different agencies which is included
in the NCP.
Objective
Dairy activities have been taken up for the rural development assuring employment 8 !ncome for
beneficiaries through out the year with low risk.
How the beneficiaries can avail the benefits of the project
The beneficiary is trained on the criteria for the selection of the new Nilch animal before they
possess the new Nilch Animal {Annexure 1)
The beneficiaries are given the loan based on the Nicro credit Plan (NCP) which is prepared by
the SHGs for availing the loan to buy the Nilch Animals.
Then the vO prepares the village Nicro Plan (vNP) based on the NCP prepared by the SHG
Nandal Nahila Samakhyas (NNS) should then appraise the NCP finally to allocate the loan as
needed.
Any member in the village can sell the milk. But priority is given to the POPs and the Poor in the
village based on the working capital of the project.
Project officials shall not be involved in selecting the beneficiaries. The beneficiaries are selected
by the SHGs in the community meetings.
Nembers should ensure that the vO is providing support for mobilizing fund for setting up
Common Water point for Nilch Animals through C!F or the bank linkages
For any heath related problem of the animal, the vO arranges for a local veterinary assistant
surgeon to issue health certificate for the Nilch Animals in order to ensure insurance coverage for
the Nilch Animals.

Job opportunity
Job opportunity is given to the SHG members by establishing Nilch collection centers" 8 the Bulk
Nilch cooling units" where they are trained as per the work allotted.
They are trained even in measuring the purity of the milk, when the milk is collected at the BNCU
centers.

Annexure1: Criteria for the selection of the Nilch animal
1. Purchase the stock from a reliable breeder or from the nearest livestock market.
2. Select Disease free (healthy) animals with the help of a qualified veterinary Surgeon
3. Purchase freshly calved animals in their second lactation.
4. Before purchasing, ascertain actual Nilch yield by Nilching the animal three times
consecutively. Nilch yield to be calculated based on mean of three consecutive Nilching.
5. !dentify the newly purchased animal by giving suitable identification mark (ear tagging).
6. vaccinate the newly purchased animal against disease.
7. Keep the newly purchased animal under observation for a period of about two weeks and
then mix with the general herd.
S. Purchase a minimum economical unit of two milch animals.
9. Purchase the second animalfsecond batch after 5 to 6 months of purchase of first animal.
10. As buffaloes are seasonal calvers purchase them during July to February.
11. As far as possible purchase the second animal when the first animal is in its late stage of
lactation and is about to become dry, thereby maintaining continuity in Nilch production vis-
a-vis income. This will ensure availability of adequate funds for maintaining the dry animals.
12. Follow judicious culling and replacement of animals in a herd.
13. Cull the old animals after 6-7 lactations.
