Geology and Water concerns?
Dutch Disease
Azerbaijan is the world's fastest growing
economy, thanks to an oil boom but there are ominous signs that the
non-oil economy is dying. The economy is showing signs of
Dutch Disease. The growth rate is due to the success of non-
tradeables such as construction, that are non-
recurring. Azerbaijan's tradeables (read enduring sectors) are showing
signs of strain. Agricultural output actually
contracted last year. Ag is the most
important part of the non-oil economy
Boom and gloom
THE big lie being peddled by both major political parties is that Australians can
spend the proceeds of the resources boom like
there is no tomorrow. Niether party has addressed the fact that the
resource boom is killing Australia's long-term
prosperity. The warning signs are starting to emerge, though few are taking
notice. The demise of what is left of our
manufacturing is being accelerated. The long-term challenge facing
Australia is called the Dutch disease, when an influx
of income from resource wealth cripples
long-term prosperity.
