ANNOUNCEMENT OF POSITION VACANCY
Deputy Director of Athletics

BRIEF JOB DESCRIPTION
The University of Iowa invites nominations and applications for the position of Deputy Director
of Athletics. This position will report directly to the Director of Athletics and serves as a
member of the senior management team that provides strategic leadership and direction to 24
varsity sports programs. The Deputy Director of Athletics is responsible for providing
administrative oversight for all Athletics Department day-to-day operations, for select sports
programs, and serves as primary departmental decision maker in absence of the Director of
Athletics.

Responsibilities include: Specific responsibilities include but are not limited to: serve as primary
advisor to the Director of Athletics; oversee implementation of the strategic plan; provide
vision and leadership in the formulation and implementation of Athletics policy; oversee,
supervise and manage Athletics Department administrative units and sports as assigned;
provide assistance and leadership for all fundraising efforts; develop or enhance relationships
and communications with key constituencies; oversee CFO and related policy development,
financial compliance programs, financial analysis and reporting, and budget development for
Athletics; and oversee Senior HR Leader and development of policies, best practices and
programming to support a culture of engagement and high productivity. The Deputy Director
will assume significant oversight responsibility for one or more other functional areas of the
department, based on experience and competencies.

QUALIFICATIONS
Required:
Masters Degree or equivalent combination education and experience.
A comprehensive understanding of all facets of NCAA Division I Athletics.
A minimum of seven years senior level athletics management experience or equivalent,
preferably at the NCAA Division I level.
Demonstrated/successful experience in budgeting and finance; and
Demonstrated/successful experience in the following aspects of intercollegiate athletics:
o Hiring & managing coaches and staff,
o Contract negotiation, evaluation and review,
o Fundraising,
o Strategic Planning,
o Public/media relations and public speaking,
o Developing campus partnerships and relationships.
Demonstrated excellent interpersonal and communication (written and oral) skills and
the ability to work effectively with a wide range of constituencies in a diverse
community;
Demonstrated commitment to integrity, inclusion, diversity, gender equity, student
well-being, and knowledge of NCAA, Title IX and Title VII compliance; and
A working proficiency in general office software applications, such as Microsoft Office
Suite, and online database systems.
Preferred:
A minimum of ten years senior level athletics management experience or equivalent is
highly preferred, preferably at the NCAA Division I level.
Experience serving as a Director of Athletics, Senior Associate Director of Athletics or
equivalent preferred, NCAA Division I experience is highly preferred;
Demonstrated/successful experience working with the sports of football and basketball;
Demonstrated/successful experience working with critical intercollegiate athletic
administrative functions, specializing in some combination of the following: (a) human
resources, (b) compliance, (c) academic services, (d) game/event management, (e) ticket
office, and (f) trademarks & licensing.
Preferences will be given to candidates that can most effectively meet the operational
needs of the Iowa Athletics Department.

Salary: Commensurate with qualifications and experience.

Terms of Employment: Full-time, 12 month appointment. Starting date is negotiable.
