Summary
This is an autobiographical novel, as the writer himself says.
David Copperfield concerns the growing-up of a boy, who, orphaned at an early age, experiences
considerable hardship.
Six months before David Copperfields birth, his father died.
arly childhood was very happy, surrounded by the love of his mother and nanny !eggotty. "hen
David was six years old, his mother married #r. #urdstone. $or the small child began a period of
anguish and terror. The stepfather and his sister, two people mean and cruel, removed him from the
house, sending him to a boarding school near %ondon.
&t the age of ten David remained without his mother also. &fter his mothers death, he is sent to wor'
in #urdstones %ondon warehouse, where he experiences poverty, despair and loneliness. (e lodges
with the family of the extraordinary #r #icawber, whose continual financial difficulties lead to his
eventual imprisonment for debts.
David decides to run away to his aunt )etsey in Dover. !enniless and alone, he has to wal' all the way
till Dover.
*n the following years the aunt was the one who too' care of his education. She sent him to Canterbury
to live with a lawyer, #r. "ic'field, and to pursue a high school. David befriends &gnes, the daughter
of #r. "ic'field and meets the sinister character +riah (eep. David grows up, successfully completes
his education and follows a short period of probation.
&n unexpected event causes a change in the lifestyle of our character, aunt )etsey lost investments,
becoming poor. This will not discourage David, but rather, will mobili-e him to find ways of living.
%earn shorthand, Dr. Strong helps to prepare a small dictionary and start writing novels. &bout this
time, David gets in love with Dora Spenlow. The relationship will end on time, following the
intervention of .ane #urdstone.
+riah (eep, who fraudulently fails to ta'e over the company #r. "ic'field and he aims to marry the
beautiful &gnes. #r. #icawber manages to foil the plans of +riah.
David and Dora get married, but after a brief and happy period, Dora died of disease. Torn by pain
David travels abroad for three years during which he finds that he has really loved &gnes all along. /n
his return to ngland he marries &gnes, ma'ing aunt )etsey and his nanny !eggotty very happy. &gnes
reveals that this was Doras dying wish.
David became an appreciated novelist.
This boo' impressed me because it is a true story. * appreciated the way in which the hero of the boo',
David Copperfield, faced with dignity all problems occurred in the way of his destiny and finally
emerged victorious.
