Its shape stands in sharp contrast to the products that the client manufactures and sells: uffy toys and deco- rative toy sheep. With an air of self-assurance it brushes aside the view of many architects that, although cement panels may be shaped like wooden planks, they must not imitate wood grain. But that is precisely what the white and black weatherboarding shows, and it is a feature not without precedence: many baroque buildings used the much cheaper stuccolustro (plaster based imitation marble) instead of genuine marble. Nevertheless, that is not an argument that should quash the current discourse on optical illusion versus authenticity of materials. Architect Georg Zunner, Ambeg, Germany Location AmSchafhgel 1, Ursensollen, Germany Photos Georg Zunner The waterfront building rises up to seven storeys in height. The upper edge of its faade follows a curved line that slopes down to two storeys at the rear where the ground plan also describes a soft curve. At its front the quayside building overlooks the marina and is clad with white and greyish blue bre cement panels. The rectangular panels make up storey-high elds of playfully alternating widths and colours, with slit-like windows ad- ding a further rhythmic accent to the faade. A roof of anthracite coloured bre cement slates and what seems to be dry stone walling create a somewhat primordial, elemental appearance; and yet this house is undeniably modern. That is largely due to the strip windows between masonry and roof, interspaced with narrow elds of bre cement sidings that also clad the gable. Reveals and all edging proles are made of galvanised me- tal plate. Tight details and the at appearance of the roof surface accentuate the buildings modern style, in spite of its traditional stone masonry. Squarish panels of varying shades of grey and blue form an irregular pattern of colours, based on a grid that follows the lines of both the oor level and the ramp. The top oor appears similarly structured, only here the materials are different. On lateral eleva- tions the opaque surfaces are clad with light coloured bre cement panels which continue on the longitudinal sides where they form ve frames to the large windows in between. The four intermediate windows feature sun visors made up of wooden vanes. Viewed at an angle the interplay of contrast and harmony is par- ticularly acute between the thin bre cement panels outlined by their narrow joints on the one hand, and the apparently heavy brickwork and fair-faced concrete slabs on the other. There is nothing to disturb the elegant, gently sloping new pyramid roof surfaces on an older private house. The roofs have been nicely nished off by square gutters and appear to be uniformly covered with bre cement slates. However, those looks are deceptive, and some of the slates are made of integral photovoltaic cells. Their rearside cables are bundled toge- ther eld by eld which in turn are connected to an inverter that feeds the electricity into the national grid. Solar thermal panels on the uppermost roof supply domestic hot water. A system of pipes laid 800 millimetres below ground and connected to a heat pump extracts geothermal energy to heat or cool the house as required. The four-storey building is shared by two neighbouring schools. It is based on a 50 x 15 metre ground plan and surrounded by birch trees. The compact volume is clad with fibre cement panels on three sides, their pattern interpreted by the architects as follows: The layering as a visual feature derives from the per- ceived analogy between the functional organisa- tion of space and the natural appearance of birch bark. Regularly spaced dark horizontal tears in the flaking white birch bark have been translated into the differently colour-coated horizontal pa- nels of the faade. All classrooms feature floor-to-ceiling glaz- ing and look north-west where no sun visors are required. Assembled behind the opaque south- east facing faade which is clad with fibre cement panels there are the secondary rooms, alterna- ting with large-scale glazed surfaces to illumi- nate the spacious corridors. Staircases are loca- ted at the corners of the building and have been kept simple to serve as emergency exit routes but also spacious enough for everyday use. The steel and concrete construction is evi- dent in the classrooms where walls of fair-faced concrete alternate with wooden built-in compon- ents. On the open corridors, however, some walls and floors have white render and bright colours. This interplay between a functional building structure and a lively decorative shell, this sym- biosis of rigorous control and playful interaction, has created an ensemble that is appropriate for its location as well as for the pupils. ...There stood the birch trees all the worlds white gathered in their trunks, well-ordered as if ruled by secret laws. ...Die Birken ... It does not pre- sent itself as a sculpture in need of interpretation, nor does it resemble the standard image of a private house. In this case, however, having a bit of everything does not suggest indecision or lack of confidence. On the contrary: the unexpected combination of shapes (shed and gable roofs) and sudden scale changes (panorama windows) fuse well-known and proven features so as to form a new ensemble. Important in this respect is the fact that the overall shape of the house ap- pears unruffled and compact, and the choice of materials is limited. The house is clad all round with small slate-like panels of dark fibre cement. The positioning of openings follows both prac- tical requirements and artistic concepts. Glazed openings are framed with stet metal profiles and either set deep into reveals of light coloured timber or inserted flush with the faade. There are no additional features such as balconies or ca- nopies, and even the gutters and downpipes are out of sight. Tall, slender windows and the three- storey height of the east facing elevation lend this structure an air of pride and self-confidence. The house is compact not only for reasons of design but also for ecological considerations. The concrete plinth is sunk into the ground to provide a basis for a pure timber structure on top, which uses high-quality thermal insulation and fibre cement slates on the faades as well as the roof. 16 A+D ARCHITECTURE + DETAIL 33 / 2009 A+D ARCHITECTURE + DETAIL 33 / 2009 17 View from west Westansicht Faade ouest 1 : 300 View from east Ostansicht Faade est 1 : 300 Ground f loor Erdgeschoss Rez-de-chausse 1 : 300 Section C-C Schnitt C-C Coupe C-C 1 : 300 Section D-D Schnitt D-D Coupe D-D 1 : 300 Section E-E Schnitt E-E Coupe E-E 1 : 300 Section B-B Schnitt B-B Coupe B-B 1 : 300 First f loor 1. By contrast to many ego- centric designs this is a project focused on built normality, whereby that normality is nevertheless unusual: the yellow, orange and red stripes of the faade are fibre cement panels with an imitation woodgrain surface sacrilege in the eyes of many architects who believe that wood should look like wood and fibre cement like fibre cement. The discussion about so-called authenticity flares up again and again. The architects of this pilot project which was part of the citys regeneration programme were looking for a standard material which they nevertheless intended to apply in a non-standard manner. Using fibre cement panels they created a contrast to the buildings 19th century neigh- bours. However, they did not want the new buil- ding to look out of place either and intended it to blend with and maybe just add a little colour to its otherwise dull environs. The 190mm wide fibre cement panels are up to 3,6m long. They re- semble wooden planks and meet the architects technical requirements as well as their aesthetic vision. Besides, they could be supplied in the spe- cified colours. By choosing a standard industrial product for this street frontage the architects ventured to reinterpret its application in a new, creative manner. Viewed from the street, the housing pro- gramme presents itself clearly structured into four distinct apartment blocks with individual windows similar to those in neighbouring buildings. At the rear, the south-facing one- to three-room apartments feature full glazing protected by horizontal sun visors. The compact apartments have no corridors and some of them extend over two floors, overlapping each other. Roughly two thirds are social housing; the rema- inder is available on the open market. 22 A+D ARCHITECTURE + DETAIL 33 / 2009 A+D ARCHITECTURE + DETAIL 33 / 2009 23 Third f loor 3. Af- ter several failed attempts in various other com- munities, it has now been realised in Vouneuil- sous-Biard without any alterations to the original concept, i.e. (1) greatest possible economy in the building programme, (2) heating costs to be as low as possible, (3) pure timber construction and (4) the use of corrugated fibre cement panels, the roofing material favoured by the architects. As regards this latter point, the client had initially opted for clay fired roofing tiles instead of the corrugated sheets so that the roof would be in keeping with the local tradition. The architects therefore changed their original plan accordingly. However, because of its low inclination, the tiled roof would have needed a secondary protective layer underneath for which the architects chose a suitable standard product, namely corrugated fibre cement panels. But during discussions prior to commissioning the work, the roofing tiles were found to be too expensive and so they were dispensed with altogether. In order to meet the client half-way, they chose corrugated fibre cement panels in a colour that resembled tradi- tional tiles. The chosen roofing material suits the large two-storey buildings very well. Each house is divi- ded into three parts: open hallway, glazed conser- vatory and a largely opaque cube containing the main living quarters. That in itself is divided into the heated living area proper and an unheated garage-cum-shed which may be upgraded later, if and when required. There are two differently sized types of houses, one offering just under 90 and a smaller one of roughly 70 square metre floor space. Another solution might have been to build smaller volumes plus secondary outhouses and annexes. But in this case the architects de- cided to assemble all functions under one roof, differentiated by their faades. As a result this group of nine similarly fashioned houses forms an agreeable ensemble. 28 A+D ARCHITECTURE + DETAIL 33 / 2009 A+D ARCHITECTURE + DETAIL 33 / 2009 29 Site plan Lageplan Plan de masse 1 : 2000 Das Pultdach, gedeckt mit Wellplatten aus Faserzement, berdeckt durchgehend die unterschiedlichen Hausteile. What is special about them is the combi- nation of low building costs with a high standard in ecological efficiency. The ingenious system comprises the recovery of waste heat from used shower water and will soon also cope with the processing of toilet waste to extract bio-gas. Thermal insulation is 50 per cent more efficient than required by building regulations. Because of a strictly limited budget, building techniques had to be inexpensive with the aim also to keep future running costs low. The shell of limestone and precast concrete floor slabs is thermally insulated to a high degree, and the faades feature wooden cladding. The roofs are constructed of prefabricated, self-supporting components that are also highly insulated and covered with corrugated fibre cement sheets. Small variations from the common basic concept add a touch of individuality to each of the three semi-detached houses: the wooden cladding alternates between vertical and horizontal, the height of eaves varies, the differences of two basic ground plans are echoed by the different layouts of windows and, last but not least, there are the three faade colours that playfully contra- dict the otherwise sensible repetition of faade patterns. All houses use the same corrugated, anthracite coloured fibre cement sheets, and all window frames are white. Lively tranquillity: Roofs of anthracite coloured, corru- gated fibre cement sheets and variously coloured timber facades. The street faade is pure 19th century: Victorian houses with brickwork faa- des and wide pavements to stroll on. However, the back was a mess before it was revamped: inappropriate alterations dating from previous decades, and an altogether shabby and neglec- ted back yard. What looks straightforward now is owing to the architects radical reorganisa- tion of the entire structure. The two buildings have been completely refurbished inside to meet todays standards, and yet the original layout has been restored so as to once more accommo- date two families. This rear-side turret-like ex- tension offers a new studio with a large window just below the pitched roof. One f loor below there is a new bathroom, and further down again there is a new entrance with access to the basement, the garden and the patio. The cross sections illustrate rather better than the photos, how the architects have con- trived to make the roof mirror the slope of the existing gable roof while keeping its height to that of its ridge. And down below, the turrets base plate rises from its lowest point at the house to the level of the garden, thereby echoing the slope of the roof. This is a highly dynamic shape whose few but large and undivided window openings introduce a new scale. Accordingly, the fibre cement panels that clad the annex are predominantly large-scale. In between, however, there are these narrow panels intended to lend a lively structure to the immaculately even sur- faces. The fibre cement panels have been fixed inconspicuously from the rear. Their grey colour corresponds to the colour of the roof and, in combination with the light render of the refur- bished faade, has helped to create an agreeable, urban ambience. Today we nd walls made of concrete, brickwork or glass just as attractive as, for example, those clad with bre cement. All modern materials can enhance the quality of interiors. Ever since building has become modern our attitude towards materials has changed, not just that of architects but also of clients or users. Fibre cement products have become a self-evident design feature, and the reason for their ever-increasing popularity is their material qualities and the wide range of applications they offer. The variety of sizes, surfaces and colours allows them to be used in private bathrooms just as well as in luxurious public venues like concert halls or convention centres, and not just for walls but also for doors, ttings and furniture. The following examples are intended to make a few novel and per- haps unexpected suggestions. 45 A+D ARCHITECTURE + DETAIL 33 / 2009 A+D ARCHITECTURE + DETAIL 33 / 2009 44 All surfaces in this room feature the same fibre cement pa- nels, including the ceiling and the floor. The panels have been sealed with clear varnish and fixed inconspicuously. There is nothing to disturb this puzzle composition. Al- though there is no door furniture in sight, some of those fibre cement surfaces will open and reveal quite conven- tional filing cabinets behind what seems to be plain wall cladding. The bright red colour of the shared restaurant and the theatre foyer can also be found elsewhere on both parts of the building; but the dark blue fibre cement panels have been reserved for the walls that point the way to the theatre. They serve as a kind of thespian signal that also identifies the Black Box outside which, by contrast to the otherwise white rendered building, is similarly clad with fibre cement panels.
