alleging that scientists needed to learn how untreated syphilis progressed in the

which later turned out to be false. The data gathered from these experiments

Their military affiliations were kept secret. Hodge was described as a
pharmacologist, "arnett as a pediatrician. :laced in charge of the 'ewburgh

was then producing millions of pounds of fluoride for the ;anhattan :roCect

farms downwind in ?loucester and !alem counties were famous for their high$

the peach crops around here." They said that poultry died after an all$night

!ome cows were so crippled that they could not stand upJ they could only graze
by crawling on their bellies. The account was confirmed in taped interviews with

conducted the initial investigation of the damage.

The farmers were stonewalled in their search for information about fluoride=s
effects on their health, and their complaints have long since been forgotten. "ut
they unknowingly left their imprint on history2 their complaints of inCury to their
health reverberated through the corridors of power in &ashington and triggered
intensive, secret, bomb program research on the health effects of fluoride.
