1. (a) Distinguish between : stress and strain, normal stress and shear stress, working
stress and yield stress. [6]
(b) An aluminium bar 60 mm diameter when subjected to an axial tensile load 100
kN elongates 0.20 mm in a gage length 300 mm and the diameter is decreased
by 0.012 mm. Calculate the modulus of elasticity and the Poissons ratio of
the material. [10]
2. A beam of span 10m is simply supported at two points 6m apart with equal over-
hang on either side. Both the overhanging portions are loaded with a uniformly
distributed load of 2 kN/m run and the beam also carries a concentrated load of
10 kN at the midspan. Construct the SF and BM diagrams and locate the points
of inexion, if any. [16]
3. (a) State the assumptions involved in the theory of simple bending. [6]
(b) Derive the Bending equation from st principle. [10]
4. (a) A rectangular beam 125mm wide is subjected to maximum shear force of
110kN. Find the depth of the beam if the maximum permissible shear stress
is 7MPa. [8]
(b) A beam of I-section is having overall depth of 700mm and overall width as
230mm. The thickness of the anges is 25mm where as the thickens of the
web is 20mm. If the section carries a shear force of 64kN, Calculate the shear
stress at salient points. [8]
5. A square frame is shown in Figure 5. is subjected to a vertical load W = 1000KN.
Determine the support reactions and forces in its members. [16]

6. (a) A beam of length L is supported at each end with a couple applied at an in-
termediate point. Deduce an expression for the deection and hence calculate
the deection at the point of application of the moment. [8]
(b) A beam of length L carries a uniformly distributed load w/unit length and
rests on three supports, two at the ends and one in the middle. Find how much
the middle support be lower than the end ones in order that the pressures on
the three supports shall be equal. [8]
7. (a) Derive an expression for the proportional increase in capacity of a thin cylin-
drical shell when it is subjected to an internal pressure. [8]
(b) A vertical gas storage tank is made of 25 mm thick mild steel plate and has to
withstand maximum internal pressure of 1.5 MN/m
2
. Determine the diameter
of the tank if stress is 240 MN/m
2
, factor of safety is 4 and joint eciency is
80%. [8]
8. A compound steel cylinder has a bore of 80 mm and an outside; diameter of 160
mm, the diameter at the common surface being 120 mm. Find the radial pressure
at the common surface which must be provided by shrinkage if the resultant max-
imum hoop tension in the inner cylinder under a superimposed internal pressure
of 60N/mm
2
is to be half the value of the maximum hoop tension which would be
produced in the inner cylinder if that cylinder alone were subjected to an internal
pressure of 60N/mm
2
. Determine the nal hoop tensions at the inner and outer
surfaces of both cylinder under the internal pressure of 60N/mm
2
and sketch a
graph to show the hoop tension varies across the cylinder wall. [16]

1. (a) Derive the relationship between the three moduli of elasticity. [8]
(b) Show that in a prismatic bar, the maximum stress intensity due to a suddenly
applied load is twice the stress intensity produced by the same load applied
gradually. [8]
2. (a) Dene statically determinate and statically indeterminate beams. Give exam-
ples. [6]
(b) A cantilever beam of length 2m carries a uniformly distributed load of 2 kN/m
over the whole length and a point load of 3 kN at the free end. Draw the SF
and BM diagrams. [10]
3. (a) Find the dimensions of the strongest rectangular beam that can be cut out of
a log of wood 2.6m diameter. [8]
(b) A T-beam having ange 160mm 20mm and web 20mm 170mm is simply
supported over a span of 6.5m. It carries a u.d.l of 6kN/m including self weight
over its entire span, together with a point load of 40kN at mid span. Find the
maximum tensile and compressive stresses occurring in the beam section and
sketch the stresses across the section. [8]
4. For a section shown in gure4. determine the average shearing stresses at A,B, C
and D for a shearing force of 23kN. Also sketch the shear stress distribution across
the section. [16]

5. Find the forces in all the members of the warrentype Cantilever truss shown in
Figure 5 by the method of sections. Tabulate the values. [16]

6. (a) What is moment area method? Explain the two Mohrs theorems, as applica-
ble to the slope and deection of a beam. [6]
(b) A cantilever of uniform cross-section of length l carries two point loads, W at
the free end and 2W at a distance a from the free end. Find the maximum
deection due to this loading. [10]
7. (a) Dene pressure vessel and discuss the most important considerations while
designing pressure vessel. [6]
(b) A boiler shell is made of 15 mm thick plate having a limiting tensile stress
of 125 N/mm

. If the longitudinal and circumferential eciencies are 70%
and 60% respectively, determine the maximum diameter of the shell. The
allowable maximum pressure is 2.2 N/mm

1. Prove that Poissons ratio for the material of a body is 0.5, if its volume does not
change when stressed. Prove also that Poissons ratio is zero when there is no
lateral deformation when a member is axially stressed. [16]
2. (a) How do you classify loads? Give examples. [4]
(b) A simply supported beam of length 5m carries a uniformly increasing load of
800 N/m run at one end to 1600 N/m run at the other end. Draw the S.F.
and B.M. diagrams for the beam. [12]
3. (a) What is elastic section modulus? [4]
(b) A beam resting freely on supports 5.8m apart carries a u.d.l of 12 kN/m and
also a point load of 15 kN at 2m from the left support. If the permissible
stress in timber is 5 MPa, design a suitable section by making the depth equal
to 1.8 times the width. [12]
4. (a) Derive from rst principles the expression for shear stress at any point in a
circular section of a beam when it is subjected to a shear force F. [8]
(b) At a section of a rectangular beam the shear force is 165kN. The section of
the beam is 120mm wide and 250mm deep. Calculate the shear stresses at
125mm, 50mm and 0mm from the neutral axis. Draw the sketch showing the
variation of shear stress. [8]
5. Determine the force in all the members of the truss shown in Figure 5 by method
of sections. [16]

1. A solid conical bar tapers uniformly from a diameter of 6cm to 2cm in a length
of 100 cm. It is suspended vertically at the 6cm diameter, the 2 cm diameter end
being downward. Calculate the elongation of the bar due to self-weight. Take unit
weight of the bar material as 78.5 kN/m

2. A horizontal beam of 10m long is carrying a uniformly distributed load of 1 kN/m
over the entire length. The beam is simply supported on two supports 6m apart.
Find the position of the supports, so that the BM on the beam is as small as
possible. Also draw the SF and BM diagrams. [16]

5. Figure 5 shows a truss ABCDEF, hinged at F and roller supported at D. It carries
vertical loads of 30 kN at A and 20 kN at C. Determine reactions at supports and
forces in all the members by method of joints. [16]

7. A vertical steam boiler is of 2 m internal diameter and 5 m high. It is constructed
with 20 mm thick plates for a working pressure of 1 N/mm
