HP P6000 EVA Simulator
V10.0 FR

Last updated 12 December 2011

Introduction
The EVA Simulator package is a software suite which allows users to run the HP P6000 EVA management
software stack without need for real EVA hardware. Simulated arrays are indiscernible from real
arrays, except that simulated arrays are marked with a descriptive SIMULATED banner in the
CommandView UI. Nearly all aspects of CVEVA are functional, including SMTP, SSSU, EvaPerf, and PA.

This readme applies to the version 10.0 EVA Simulator Z7550-00252_EvasimInstaller_100fr_v1.exe.
Z7550-00138_EvasimInstaller_94fr_v1.exe is the prior version and is based on 9.4 CVEVA. The 9.4
version does not have a readme file.

Please report any comments, suggestions, or problems to ArraySimulatorFeedback@hp.com.

We want your feedback, but the distribution is as-is and no support is provided. Raising issues to us
may allow us to help with simple problems (as time permits) and will help drive improvement to future
product.

Array models P6500, P6300, 8400, 6400, 4400, 8100, and 6100 are supported.

Core package includes ability to manage, configure, and provision EVA arrays. System Requirements for
core package are:
OS: Microsoft Windows XP, Vista, 7, 2003 R2 Server, 2008 R2 Server. 32 or 64 bit
English localized or English localized baseline with non-English MUI
1GB free hard drive space
2GB of RAM

If you are planning to run EVAPA (EVA Performance Advisor), it is recommended to install the package
on OS windows 7 64bit or Windows 2008 Server R2 64 bit. EVAPA is not enabled by default and its use is
optional. See Appendix A for instructions on how to set up EVAPA.

Installation

All simulation actions, processes, and steps must run with administrator level host privileges. It is
recommended that UAC be disabled when running simulation in order to minimize the chances of
running some portion with non-administrator privileges.

Simulation is installed by running Z7550-00252_EvasimInstaller_100fr_v1.exe and following the
prompts to extract the Microsoft installer files to a location of your choice. Install the package by
running setup.exe.

Important! Authentication credential setup is not automatically handled by the EVA Simulation
installer. See Appendix B for instructions on how to set up basic local authentication. You will not be
able to login to CVEVA unless authentication has been set up.

You will only need to set up authentication one time. These credentials can be re-used if the simulator
package ever re-installed.

Managing the Simulator Bundle

The installer creates a folder in the start menu called HP P6000 EVA Simulator. There are several
options available in that menu:

Start HP P6000 EVA Simulator starts the simulator bundle
Stop HP P6000 EVA Simulator stops the simulator bundle, including PA
Start Standalone Simulator starts only the simulator process (uncommon)
Start EVAPA start the EVAPA processes
Stop EVAPA stop the EVAPA processes (uncommon)
RESET CVEVA Environment reset the CV 10.0 environment (uncommon)
Uninstall HP P6000 EVA Simulator uninstall the simulator bundle

When starting the simulator an IE browser window is automatically generated. Sometimes the CVEVA
process is not yet ready and the browser acts as if it cannot connect. You may need to press F5 (refresh)
and/or the UI button Discover storage systems in order to see the simulated EVAs.

Disclaimer
While the Simulator strives to achieve 100% compatibility with EVA firmware, it cannot provide a perfect
model of EVA behavior. The extent to which simulation should be used to evaluate a part of CVEVA
and/or layered applications is a judgment call. Use of real EVA hardware and firmware is an essential
step to assure a full understanding of EVA behavior.
Configuration Options

There are many configuration options for EVA simulation. Examples include: types of arrays, quantity of
arrays, drive types, quantity of drives, configuration persistence, LUN load rate, LUN fill rate, drive
failure injection, rate of allocation, rate of copy, and rate of reconstruction. These options are intended
for HP Internal Use Only, but if you have a special need, contact arraysimulationfeedback@hp.com.

Common Run Time Issues

The following are causes of most run time issues.

All tasks must run with administrator level host privileges. For ease of use, it is recommended to run
with UAC disabled.

When the IE browser window appears, you may need to press F5 (refresh) and/or the GUI button
Settings/Discover Storage Systems in order to see the simulated EVAs.

Any prior installation of EVA Simulation of the CVEVA Suite must be removed prior to install.

You must follow the authentication requirements for CVEVA. Ensure a user account exists which is a
member of the HP Storage Admins group. This user account must be used to login to CVEVA.

The following problems manifest themselves as the inability to login to CVEVA even though you are
confident you have authentication set up correctly. Use the following as a checklist if you
encounter issues logging in.

Certificate Install may not be working. Try to save the certificate, then install from the saved
location - instead of directly installing it.
McAfee firewall may be blocking communications. Either disable the firewall or add a rule to
allow full tcp access for [install location]\evasim\cveva\misc_cv\XF\bin\win-32\xf.exe.

The host IP address has changed since you installing simulation. If this happens, reinstall or run
RESET CVEVA Environment and restart the simulation.

Incorrect Proxy Server setting

HP P6000 EVA Simulator
No assigned IP address. If this happens, ensure host is connected to an active IP network and an
IP address is assigned to your host. Reinstall or run RESET CVEVA Environment and restart
the simulation.

Appendix A. How to RUN EVAPA

EVA simulation supports EVA PA. Simulated servers and simulated load create an experience in PA that
mimics use of PA in a real SAN environment.

Either Windows 7 64bit or Windows 2008 Server R2 64 bit operating system is recommended. Prior
Windows OS versions may work but are not fully tested.

Ensure you have a running simulation environment with all expected arrays visible and manageable in
the CVEVA UI. To start PA, click on the Start EVAPA link under the HP P6000 EVA Simulator menu.

Wait about 3 minutes, press F5 (refresh) and re-logon to CVEVA.

After logging in, go to the Settings slider in the bottom left corner of the browser.

Now click on the Configuration tree item under PA root.

To add an Array to be monitored by PA, click on the Quick Setup button.

Click Next on the Wizard Window.
HP P6000 EVA Simulator

If the Command View running on the machine is found, click the next button.

If no Command View instance was found, then there is an issue. This is usually caused by a firewall
blocking the connectivity.

HP P6000 EVA Simulator
Enter localhost in the file Enter server name/IP address. Then click the Add button. Once the instance
of EVAPDCS is detected, an entry will appear in the Performance Data Collector Server Name/IP Address
list.

Now click the Next button.

If the localhost entry does not get placed into the bottom, this means that the instance of EVAPDCS
cannot be detected. This is usually caused by a firewall blocking the connectivity

Now the setup will attempt to detect initialized arrays from Command View. Once the list populates,
select some number of arrays to monitor, and click Next.
HP P6000 EVA Simulator

If the list of Arrays never populates, there either are not any initialized Arrays, or there is a problem
trying to connect to Command View. The connectivity issue is usually caused by a firewall.
Click Next.

Click Next.

Now the Wizard Window will disappear.
Click Refresh in the top right corner to see the list update with the Array you selected in the Wizard.

Now the Array is being monitored.

If the Array does not show up in the list after 30 seconds, or so, click on the Events tree item to the left.
The events section displays an event log of what processes have happened in the Database, and
whether they were successful, or not.

Additional object from an Array can be configured to be monitored under the Storage Systems tree item
on the left.
HP P6000 EVA Simulator

Once the different Objects are setup ( like the Quick Setup Wizard was done ), you can click on the
Storage Systems slider to administrate ( Management Tab ), or see performance information (
Performance Tab ) about those objects. The Tabs are on the top right corner of the screen, once the
Array object is selected.

Any further Arrays, or Array objects can be configured the same way.

To reset the PA database: If the database for PA needs to be reset for any reason - click on the Start
EVAPA Force Recreate DB link under the HP P6000 EVA Simulator menu after the Simulator has been
started.

To Stop PA: Click on the Stop EVAPA link under the HP P6000 EVA Simulator menu, or Click on the Stop
HP P6000 EVA Simulator to shut everything down. Note: Both of the links used to stop EVAPA may take
a minute or two to complete.

Appendix B. How to Set Up Authentication

This section describes how to set up basic local authentication credentials on a Windows 7 system. The
steps will be similar on other windows Operating Systems, but in the interest of conciseness, only the
Windows 7 procedure is described.

This procedure assumes a new local user account is to be created for login to CVEVA. An existing
account or domain account can instead be used, but those procedures are not described.

In this procedure, a Windows OS local user account CV is created. That account is made a member of
the group HP Storage Admins. Once created and a member of the group, the CV account will have rights
to be able to login to CVEVA.

Run command compmgmt.msc at the command prompt to start the Computer Management interface.

While in the User section of the Local Users and Groups section, right click and choose New User

Fill out the account information:
1.) User name: CV
2.) Password: choose a password that conforms to your corporate security guidelines
3.) Uncheck the User must change password at next logon
4.) Check the User cannot change password
5.) Check the Password never expires
6.) Click on the Create button
