HSCv2 Quick Start Guide
For DaVis 8.1.6

1 Introduction
The HSCv2 is an improved firmware for the LaVision HSC device. It is recognized by DaVis as a new device type.
This requires changing the firmware (and type) with an external program prior to activate an HSCv2 in DaVis.
2 Change the HSC Firmware
To get all the HSCv2 functionality, it is required to switch the firmware from HSC to HSCv2. Two small apps are
provided in the DaVis/win64 folder which either convert an HSC into an HSCv2 or vice versa.
HSC to HSVv2: browse to the DaVis/win64 directory and start the HSC_to_HSCv2.exe. It will run a
command line program which updates the firmware and changes the device descriptor. The progress
and status is reported. After the conversion the device is no longer recognized by older as HSC but as
HSCv2. This means it can no longer be operated in an earlier version of DaVis than 8.1.2. As a
fallback the HSCv2 has to be converted back to HSC.
HSCv2 back to HSC: same as above but start HSCv2_to_HSC.exe instead.

3 Enable the HSCv2 in DaVis
Start DaVis and and open the CL Variables view through the macro menu.
Search for a variable named hscv2dev_Enabled and set it to 1
Restart DaVis

5 Installation with LaVision .lcf file
The value of the variable hscv2dev_Enabled is not stored in the LaVision .lcf file that is on an installation DVD.
To install DaVis from a DVD with the .lcf file please do the following:
Install DaVis from the DVD with Use system configuration on DVD prepared by LaVision option
Start DaVis, press the F6 key to open the CL-variable dialog. Search for hscv2dev_Enabled and set it to
1. Restart DaVis.
Go to Help load configuration file. Load the .lcf file from the DVD.
Select the correct adapters that are connected to your HSC in the Line Configuration. The settings
for the connectors are currently not stored in the .lcf file (known issue, will be fixed in the near
future).

6 Hardware Setup
6.1 HSCv2
In the setup for the HSCv2 device information is displayed and settings for the rotary decoder (if available) can
be specified. The device information shows the available features, the serial number and firmware version.
If the HSC has the rotary decoder feature (#1108076) the rotary decoder settings need to be adapted to the
encoder of the engine. One needs to specify the resolution of the CDM (crank degree marker) signal. For CDM
signals with 50% duty cycle optionally both edges can be used to increase the resolution by a factor of 2.
An Offset can be specified to have the TDC at 0 degrees. DaVis assumes a cycle to be from -360 degree to 359
degree (or -180 to 180 for two stroke engines).

Cycle length: you can select 360degrees (for two-stroke engines) or 720 degrees (for four-
stroke engines)
Master triggers per cycle: You can select 1 if the rotary decoder gives 1master trigger every
720 degrees or 2 if the rotary decoder gives 1 master trigger every 360 degrees. If 2 is
selected the frequency of the incoming master trigger is divided by two so that the HSC gets
one master trigger every 720 degrees internally. In the Timing dialog you can then select if
the odd or even master triggers are skipped and set the system that the ignition TDC is at 0
degrees.
Use both CDM edges: If this is checked the HSC detects the rising and falling edges of the
CDM signal and increases the resolution. Else only the rising edges are used.
Please note: it is only sensible to use this feature if the CDM signal has 50%
duty cycle.
CDM triggers per cycle: the number of CDM triggers per cycle is displayed here. It is
calculated from the selected resolution and cycle length.
CDM Resolution: select the resolution of the rotary decoder here.
Detect resolution: if this button is clicked the HSC counts the CDM triggers between two
master triggers and displays the measured value in the CDM resolution. If no changes from
the CDM resolution are detected or no CDM triggers are applied, the CDM resolution is not
changed.
Offset: enter the offset between the real TDC of the engine and the position of the master
trigger from the rotary decoder here.

Engine / Phase angle based
Engine / Phase angle based Hypersampling
Please Note: the choice of available measurement domains depends on the
HSC version (feature flags):

6.3 Line Configuration

Using the Line Configuration card in the Recording tree of the Hardware Setup dialog you can declare the
Adapter types you are using to provide camera and other devices like a laser system with the required trigger
signals. There are default adapters for certain systems, but in general there are different adapters available
that can be used. Therefore you need to make sure that the correct adapter and trigger line is selected in your
setup.

Please note: this feature was not available with HSC v1. Therefore the cabling
of the system with HSC v2 can be different from the cabling with HSC v1!

By default the #1007820 Camera adapter is used on the Camera Terminal of the HSC. For each camera one
Image Clock and one Trigger signal is output on the labeled lines. It depends on the camera model where the
lines have to be connected physically. The Line column in the Line Configuration dialog displays the name of
the according inputs on the camera.

In case you do not have the connector #1007820 you can still select this in the hardware setup and connect a
different connector physically. Be aware that the labels on the output BNCs is different then as shown in DaVis.
If you e.g. select the connector 1007820 but physically connect 1003830 instead the image clock and trigger
signal are output on these lines:

1007820 HSC, Camera 1003830 Camera
Image Clock 1 Cam 1
Trigger 1 I/I
Image Clock 2 Cam 2

Optional external trigger signals from the experimental setup can be received on four lines. By default the
#1002685 PTU adapter is used on the rear panel of the HSC. The different BNC cables can be used as follows:
Trigger: Can receive a single or cyclic trigger signal for the phase locked recording start or a master trigger
(one per cycle) during the read-out of an encoder.
Arming: Currently not used.
Start: Can receive a trigger signal to start a cyclic recording.
CDM: Can receive the CDM trigger signals (N per cycle) from an encoder.

9 Timing Setup
The timing setup of the high speed recording is used to parameterize the main settings of the recording. Any
conflicting input leads to a red marked field and an error or warning message in the Status box.

The appearance of this dialog depends on the timing setup selection in the hardware setup.

9.1 Time based recording
Timing section

Internal cycle trigger + internal image clock: you can select the cycle and image rate for the recording.
The image rate has to be an even multiple of the cycle rate. In case of a mismatch a warning is
displayed in the status view and the cycle rate is automatically adjusted to the closest possible value.

External cycle trigger + internal image clock: the expected rate of the external cycle trigger can be
specified here. The selected value is used to check other recording parameters e.g. the number of
images per cycle. When indicated a warning or error will be displayed in the status section. If the
refresh button is clicked the external cycle rate is measured and displayed in the dialog. The recording
is always phase locked to the external cycle trigger. The delay between the first image clock and the
external trigger is one image clock (fixed).
Note: for HSS3/4G, HSS5.1, HSS6 and HSS8 use trigger mode RANDOM RESET
has to be checked in the hardware setup to get phase locked recording start.

In the diagram above shows an example for the external cycle trigger synchronization is given assuming the
following setup:
internal image clock + external cycle trigger
record image 3 to 6
camera: Vision Reseach Phantom

The time between the image clock and external cycle trigger (t
Phase
) is unknown, since the image clock
generated internally in the HSC is not phase locked to the external cycle triger signal. This unknown phase
relation would result in a jitter of one full image clock period. To overcome the jitter the HSC introduces a fixed
delay of one image clock after receiving the asynchronous external cycle trigger. This results in slightly higher
intrinsic delay, but ensures a fixed phase relation between external cycle trigger and image clock. On the one
hand it is required by the devices (especially cameras and laser) since they might malfunction if they would be
trigger faster than their actual maximum frequency.

External cycle trigger + external image clock: the expected cycle and image rates can be specified
here. The selected values are used to check other recording parameters e.g. the number of images
per cycle and maximum camera exposure time. When indicated a warning or error will be displayed in
the status section. If the refresh button is clicked the external cycle or image rate is measured and
displayed in the dialog.

Programmable Parameter section for time based recording:

The Programmable Parameter Recording upgrade (PPR) allows to select different recording ranges with
different dt during a cycle. Note: multiple recording steps are only available if the HSC supports the
Programmable Parameter Recording (PPR) feature.
Depending on the connected devices there can be limitations. E.g. the recording ranges must have the same
number of images and be without gap between them for HSS cameras.

Single time-based recording
For a single time based recording select the number of cycles: 1.
Status view

The online status display shows the current cycle and image rate and conflicts based on the input values.
There are two levels of conflicts:
Error, indicated by . A recording is not possible as long as the error sign is displayed.
Warning, indicated by . A recording is possible, but there is something in the timing settings you
should be aware of.

Examples:
1. Internal cycle trigger + internal image clock, cycle rate: 10Hz, Images clock: 1kHz, start image: 1, end
image: 150, 10cycles. These settings will display the following warning:

The cycle period is 100msec, the recording duration for 150 images is 150msec. DaVis will still record

2. Internal cycle trigger + internal image clock, cycle rate: 1Hz, Images clock: 10kHz, start image: 1, end
image: 5000, 200cycles. These settings will display the following error:

The selected number of images to be recorded is higher than the camera can store in the internal
memory.

9.2 Engine / Phase angle based recordings

Timing section

The expected engine speed and tolerance can be selected here. The maximum expected image rate is
calculated from engine speed + fluctuation and selected resolution. This value is used to check the selected
recording parameters like camera exposure time. An error is displayed if the maximum expected rate is higher
than the maximum possible at the currently selected AOI.
For setup and adjustment an engine simulation can be activated to generate the rotary encoder signals at the
given speed (red = simulation active, grey = engine active).
If two master triggers per cycle is selected in the hardware setup, the HSC skips every other incoming master
trigger to get clear signals for each cycle. The button determines if the odd or even master triggers are
skipped.

The user can:
Select the start (1), end (2) and PIV dt (3) (In future versions other options may follow) for each
recording step. The start and end values can be entered either in CA or in Images. The input option
can be changed using the Scale button (8).
Select the number of cycles to be recorded (4). The number of cycles can be set to the maximum
possible value using the Arrow Up button. The resulting number of images per cycle and total number
of images are displayed (5).
Add or delete rows in the table (6)
Adjust the entered values to the grid of the image rate (7).

Between consecutive cycles is a gap of 3 image clock ticks where recording is
not possible.
The image clock rate is the pre-scaled CDM rate. Pre-scaling is based on the
ration of CDM resolution and recording resolution.

Status view
The Status View window shows current engine speed and warnings in case any settings are conflicting.

The actual measured engine speed is displayed in the online status display.

Additionally the current measured image rate and the variation is displayed.

The variation is calculated as follows:

The average frequency of the CDM triggers (AverageCdmFrequency) is calculated:
(CycleFrequencyHz/MasterTriggerPerCycle) * (UnitsPerCycle/CDM-Resolution)
Where (UnitsPerCycle/CDM-Resolution) equals the "CDM trigger per cycle"

The variation in percent is:
highest deviation (lower or higher frequency than average frequency) / AverageCdmFrequency * 100.

9.3 Engine / Phase angle based Hypersampling

Hypersampling is a powerful tool that enables measurements of transient phenomena with strong variations of
the engine speed like acceleration and allows to utilize devices with fixed or limited frequency range to
fluctuating engine speeds.
Cameras and other devices are operated at a fixed rate that depends on the settings in the timing section. The
timestamps of the images and relevant engine timestamps (CDM and master) are recorded with a digital
sampler.
A digital sampler is an essential part for Hypersampling measurements.
Additionally connector #1008067 is needed to have an output of the relevant timing signals out of the HSC.

The image rate is calculated from the engine speed plus tolerance times factor (see Hypersampling sub-card)
and does not change during the recording.
The recording duration for each cycle is calculated from the selected recording range during the cycles based
on the lowest expected engine speed.

The display method for the images can be selected in the Hypersampling sub-card after the recording. The
timing information can be found in ~\AppData\Roaming\LaVision\TriggerTimingInformation.txt
If the images were stored to hard disk the display mode can be selected in the properties card of the dataset:

The timing information is stored in the same folder as the images and can be accessed via explorer.

Display Methods:
Raw: displays the images as recorded by the camera. With the images the image number and the
exact CA when the image was recorded are stored as attributes (attributes HyperSamplingInfo and
AcqPhase0
Interval: displays the added signals from all recorded camera images within the interval normalized
with the interval length
Neighbours: displays an image for a certain crank angle computed from the two recorded images with
the smallest time distance from the time of the crank angle. The signal in each of these images is
weighted with the distance to the crank angle time.
Nearest: The recorded image that is nearest in time from the crank angle of interest is assigned to the
crank angle position.

10 Multi Cycle Recordings
The multi cycle recordings (former known as Loop Recordings, know referred to as Run) are stored in a loop
set which contains the recorded cycles as recording sets. Selecting a loop set shows a movie player with
controls for image and cycle. This way one may walk through different cycles at a fixed crank angle or through
all images of a single cycle.

10.1 Trigger Scheme
The following trigger scheme shows a full run. The HSC starts in the Standby state. Once the Start Recording
button is pressed in DaVis the HSC waits for a start trigger. Once a start trigger is received (either through
software or a TTL signal) the HSC waits for the next cycle trigger. Then the devices are triggered within a cycle
as specified in the recording steps. This sequence is repeated for the given number of cycles.

The scheme also shows the offset between the real cyclic master trigger from the engine and the internally
used shifted cycle trigger.

10.2 Single Cycle
The following figure shows the individual recording steps within a cycle. The steps can be placed at arbitrary
phase ranges. The ranges must not overlap but can be close or have gaps. Within the given recording steps the
camera and laser triggers are generated. The gaps are automatically filled with record idle triggers which are
e.g. laser triggers but no camera triggers.

Note: multiple recording steps are only available if the HSC supports the Programmable Parameter Recording
(PPR) feature.

11 Using an Analog/Digital converter

The Analog/Digital converter is recording the whole cycle, not only the part that is recorded by the
camera(s).

In angle based recordings (engine), there are no special limitations.

In case you are recording time-based with external cycle trigger and internal image clock, the external cycle
trigger has to be very stable, otherwise the analog data trace wont be in phase with the cycle trigger and thus
the camera images.

If you are using HighSpeedStar cameras, the frequency additionally has to be a whole multiple of the image
frequency. We advise you to use internal cycle trigger generation instead. The generated cycle trigger is ouput
at the status line Trigger (see Status Signals ).
