Industry Profile
Origin of bicycle industry:

Bicycle is the oldest vehicle of human beings which is used for transportation. It was almost
start of 19
th
century that first bicycle has been invented In Germany. Baron Van Davis was the
person who made bicycle. After too much evolution in 1870s bicycle made a shape of modern
days. After that time bicycles are being manufactured all over the world.

Pakistan bicycle industry history:

There was no single factory which manufactured bicycles and their spare parts at the time of
independence in Pakistan. There were no industry in Pakistan and due to that fact some of the
importers of that time brought bicycle in Pakistan and passed on for sale to retailers most of the
shops were situated in Lahore at Nila Gunbad which was the main market of bicycles. Today
Nila Gunbad market is the main market of car tires, Bicycle tires and spare parts.
Origin of bicycle industry in Pakistan:

In 1952 the Shortage of foreign exchange reserves encouraged a serious look into domestic
production and a remarkable idea was conceived by the twenty two shop owners of the Nila
Gunbad area drafted a plan to establish foundation of a co-operative society for the purpose of
bicycle manufacturing factory within the country on cooperative basis. The main reason behind
the establishment of the society is to provide mutual help and benefits to its founding members.
Elections of the society were held promptly. The society has been functioning successfully all
along is because of the fact that its members take deep interest in its working.

Local & imported Spare Parts

According to the reports of different governmental departments only a few spare parts of
bicycles were manufactured locally at the initiation of Bicycle industry and about 90% spare
parts were import from abroad. The situation started improving with the passage of time and
today almost 98% bicycles spare parts are being manufactured in Pakistan or through vendors.
According to different published sources there are 300 bicycle vendors in Pakistan and
employing more than 3000 workers.

Pakistan Bicycles industry overview

If we compare Pakistani bicycle industry with international bicycle industry then we can see that
we have only one major manufacturer in the industry and covering the entire local market. The
international bicycle industry is much stronger than Pakistani bicycle industry. India is the
second largest manufacturer of bicycles after china. China has great contribution in the
manufacturing of bicycles. Chines Bicycle industry is a big threat for both Indian and Pakistani
bicycle industry. We can say that the decline of local Pakistani industry is just because of
imported Chines Bicycles are covering the market share.
Specification of Bicycles in Pakistan

In Pakistan bicycles are the only cheaper means of transportation for the local public. Bicycles
are categorized in to fancy and standard bicycles.

Fancy Bicycles
Standard Size Bicycles

Standard bicycle is the smaller segment worldwide and is on the decline with more and more
companies turning towards fancy bicycle. In Pakistan standard bicycle is the bigger segment.
The sub segments of the fancy bicycles in which mountain bike, BMX, Electric bicycles and
recumbent bicycles. If we want to segment the bicycle industry then we can segment bicycle in
to three categories small size bicycles, medium size which is also called fancy bicycles and
standard size bicycles.
Fancy Bicycles:
A fancy bicycle has different types which attracts the youngsters. When we talk about speed then
indeed one thing always come in to our mind that less weight bicycles are more reliable for
customer point of view. Fancy bicycles has the speciality of different frame designs, colours,
braking system, comfortable seats, stylish reflectors, electric light system for mountains, classy
mudguards, sporty looks, shining nickel brings more beauty in the product which attracts the
customers. Gear system increases the speed of the bicycle but decrease the pressure of pedals.

Small size bicycles
Small size bicycles are only for childrens which has child attraction features in which the
colour, frame design are more important features. It lies in the category of Fancy cycles.

Standard Size Bicycles

The third segment is standard size bicycle which is for personal use instead of entertainment. The
benefit of standard bicycle in Pakistan is more as compare to fancy. The target market of
standard bicycle is poor people or those who work on wages. There are 50,000,000 people who
work on daily wages in all the areas of Pakistan and to be considered as the poor people. The
standard bicycle is the major benefit for the Pakistani region.

Standard Bicycle speciality

These are the countries China, India, Pakistan, Afghanistan,
Bangladesh, and Syria in which the largest population is dependent on bicycles. The main
features of standard bicycle is heavy weight, we can carry children giving a ride to our spouse.
Carrying capacity is more than fancy bicycles. We can carry lunch boxes, laundry cloths, milk
containers and a variety of things. People play bicycle polo in northern areas of Pakistan. The
bicycle of night watchman in our colonies proudly rides it all night, blowing a shrill whistle to
remind us that he is keeping a careful eye on streets.

Major Players

According to the SMEDA report Pakistan bicycle industry is dominated by one key player,
Sohrab which comprised more than (80 %) eighty percent share of the whole industry whereas
the rest of (20 %) the production is shared by other six authorized and unauthorized
manufacturing companies. Our group members visited many dealers in the market and talked
about the current trends or preferences of the customers.

Sohrab

Sohrab established since 1953, as a small assembly unit for bicycles. The Sohrab a standard
bicycle, is the largest selling bicycle in the country. Several other varieties produced under the
brand name Sohrab include, sports and fancy bicycles in which BMX, Panda, Vip sports,
Sprinter, Mountain bikes (with Multi Speed Gears).

Sartaj and Humber

Some local unauthorised manufacturers buy different spare parts and make their own bicycles at
home and then sell into the market by putting the names of Sartaj and Humber. I saw two or
three Bicycles of Sartaj in which the handle of the Bicycle was made of Sohrab and some of the
parts were Chinese and local made. There was no check from the governmental authorities which
is the need of the bicycle industry.

Market Story of different bicycles

In standard bicycles Sohrab is the one which people like most in Punjab. We asked many dealers
about Sohrab they said Sohrab is like a Brand in standard Bicycles people always prefers Sohrab
Bicycle. Falcon Bicycles are manufacturing in china and the dealers put the name Falcon
Pakistan and sell it in the local market. Eagle and Sohrab are the two companies which are
manufacturing standard bicycles and the cost is also affordable and providing 5 years Warranty
of the frame and other parts as well. Sartaj is the Indian Bicycle name but manufacturing in
Pakistan. Sartaj is also providing 5 year warranty of the frame. The same Sohrab frames are
being used by these small companies like Sartaj and humble.

Chinese Phoenix Bicycle

Chinese Phoenix bicycle was everywhere in the shops. According to the shop keeper the demand
for Chinese Phoenix cycle is very high just because of low prices and stylish designs which
attract customers. All spare parts of Chinese bicycles are available in the market. Low quality
and low price Chinese Phoenix bicycles are also available in the market. Some people go to the
price factor and rest go with the quality factors. There are some more types in which you will
find High price and high quality Chinese Bicycles. The finishing of the Chinese bicycle is
excellent as compare to the local manufactured bicycles. Chinese bicycles are not solid in nature
but the fancy categories are the main focus of Chinese bicycles.

Company Profile:
Introduction:
Sohrab bicycle (simply called cycle in Pakistan) probably deserves a spot in the national
museums, along with the Tanga, Bael gaari, decorated busses, and the Rickshaw. Its name is
synonymous with bicycle in Pakistan. This bicycle is built from a sturdy metal frame (sometimes
too heavy for casual riding), is often painted black, and has a metal flat plate at the back that has
been used over time for all kinds of purposes: from carrying children to giving a ride to your
spouse, from lunch tiffin boxes to laundry and milk-containers, or a variety of other things. Oh
yes, and Pakistan and India regularly compete in bicycle polo matches as well!
Popularity of Sohrab Cycles:
Sohrab is ubiquitous in both urban and rural centers in Pakistan. I have seen the Sohrab bicycles
decorated with flowers, neon lights, loudspeakers, advertisements and all shapes and colors of
reflectors. The ingenuity used by some Sohrab enthusiasts to oufit their vehicles easily shames
the Harley Davidson owners in the USA. You only have to see the bicycle of the Chowkidar
(night watchman) in our mohalla to believe it. He proudly rides it all night, blowing a shrill
whistle to remind us that he is keeping a careful eye out.
Here is a little bit I could find about the history of bicycle industry in Pakistan. However, I would
love to hear your stories of owning, decorating, riding, or simply watching others enjoy their
Sohrabs:
At that time of Independence in 1947, there was no bicycle factory in Pakistan. Imported bikes
were made available and Nila Gumbad market in Lahore became a hub for bicycle sales
Shortage of foreign exchange reserves in 1952 prompted a serious look into domestic production,
and a remarkable idea was conceived: 22 shop owners of the Nila Gumbad area drafted a plan to
establish a bicycle manufacturing factory within the country on cooperative basis.
On 8th September, 1953, the Pakistan Cycle Industrial Cooperative Society was formally
Sohrab Pakistan

University of Central Punjab Page 10

registered under Section 9 of Cooperative Societies Act II of 1912. It has been controlled by an
elected body ever since 2012 it is continued in same way.
The Cycle Co-operative Society has seen significant growth since its inception. It now accounts
for the production of 80+% of all bicycles sold in Pakistan, and provides spare parts across the
country . The Co-operative Society now has over 225 members, a 25-acre Rustam and Sohrab
cycle factory with 2100 workers and a capacity of producing nearly 2000 bicyles daily.
In addition to Sohrab, there are 6 other OEMs producing bicycles in Pakistan.
As with any OEM (original equipment manufacturing) business, the bicycle industry has created
support industries which employ thousands of people.
According to different published sources, there are 300 bicycle vendors in Pakistan, employing
3000 workers. These vendors buy raw material worth Rs49 million and after value addition sell it
on to the manufacturers for Rs98 million. The 300 vendors supply to 7 big Original Equipment
Manufacturers (OEMs) and 20 unorganized OEMs (small firms). OEMs employ a total of 5000
workers. The OEMs supply a further of Rs1.32 billion worth of new bicycles and Rs100 million
worth replacement parts of bicycles to the retail assemblers/dealers/puncture shops. The retailers
are supplied spare parts (including tires and tubes) through some 175 component manufacturer,
employing 4000 workers in a market worth Rs230 million as new parts and Rs1.62 billion as the
replacement market bicycles. There are some 3000 retailers/assemblers, employing 9000 people
and cater to the Rs1.71 billion new bicycles demand and Rs2.78 billion replacement bicycle
market.
The Co-operative society is now also producing several other bicycle models besides the good
ol Sohrab. From ladies bikes and three-wheelers to BMX Sohrab, multi-speed mountain bikes,
street race bikes, and even motorized bikes with 4-stroke engines.
According to a recent study, a total 629,695 number of bicycles were produced in 2002-03 and
681,448 were produced in 2003-04 thus showing the growth rate of 8.22%.
Despite my nostalgia associated with the Sohrab, Pakistani bicycle industry is under serious
threat from regional competition, and is surviving thanks to the protection provided by import
duties on bicycles (~30% import tariff). India and China, for example, are exporters of high
quality, cheap bikes whereas Pakistani industry is barely able to meet local demands. As free
Sohrab Pakistan

University of Central Punjab Page 11

trade develops in the region, both the government and producers stand to lose, while it is
expected that the consumers would gain significantly.

SWOT Analysis:
A SWOT Analysis is a simple, but effective tool when strategic planning. Many individuals,
groups and organizations use the SWOT Analysis to evaluate Strengths, Weaknesses,
Opportunities and Threats when faced with a project that has a specific objective in mind.
SWOT can be categorized into two distinct categories; they are internal and external forces. For
instance, internal forces include strengths and weaknesses, external forces include opportunities
and threats. Many times a SWOT Analysis can be viewed as a matrix; however, you can also
choose to view a SWOT Analysis in tree structure form or simply listed as categories within a
document. According to my knowledge of strategic management I observed following internal
and external analysis.

IDENTIFICATION OF PLAUSIBLE
PROBLEM(S)

Although sohrab Pakistan was the part of bigger group one of the most respectful group of
Pakistani business community. Sohrab Pakistan have sufficiently developed pool of customers.
Also due to low production and high demand of bikes in Pakistan from last few years, Customers
Company is doing well when we talk about list of customers, company is selling thousands of
items daily and exporting it to foreign customers in US $.
Despite the high sales company is facing loss from last few years after when group purchased it.
Loss per share for third quarter 2011-2012 is RS 7.8. Other financial indicators are not very
motivating
During my internship at head office of Sohrab Pakistan I have find out some areas and problem
that must be consider.

1. In any company employees are the key success factor. But in Sohrab Pakistan employee
satisfaction level is extremely low during my conversation with several employees all of
them wanted to change their job. In office when I saw the computer screen almost every
worker was surfing on job searching websites. The major reason behind this low
motivation is low salary package and slow promotion opportunities. Most of the workers
with B.com IT qualification in Accounts & Finance department are getting RS 8000
monthly salary. Employee with the MBA degree and 8 years experience in the company
is getting RS 29,000. Company is even not taking care of extrinsic motivation of their
employees. Then how they can expect employee involvement and creativity.

2. As long as organizational culture is concerned; there are values and culture of the office.
But to me it never looks like a public limited companys head office. It looks like a
traditional old 70s organization of sub-continent which never accepts modern day
globalization. There is no dress code or other implications. I think it is not a good impact
for a professional customer or a strange one.
Sohrab Pakistan

University of Central Punjab Page 24

3. Imporient Group whose part is Sohrab Pakistan having two More companies including
Sohrab Pakistan whose products are exported to foreign customers but what I find out
they even not aware of Hedging techniques like forward options and forward contracts to
minimize the exchange rate risk. They are not doing anything to minimize their currency
exposure. Although PKR is depreciating against dollar they may be better off by not
going into forward contracts but in case of imporient chemicals whose business 100%
depends on imported products is badly affecting the financial condition of the group.

4. Financial statements for the 9 months show some big problems for Sohrab Pakistan. First
financial cost is major expense head in income statement of financials. Financial cost for
ninth month ended is Rs. 138,948,764 and this amount converted the operating profit of
Rs. 59,466,184 into Net Loss of RS 73,745,266 which is resulted Loss per share of RS
7.80.

5. If we consider the consolidated balance sheet for the third quarter ended it is clearly
showing unfavorable Current ratio of 0.74. companys Debt to equity ratio is 1.757 this
shows the companys aggressive attitude to support its growth potential but now
company is bearing the opportunity cost in the shape of high financial cost expanse which
is the biggest reason for loss.

6. Companys accumulated loss is Rs 866,711,651 the reason to show all figures is that
finance department is not aware of the importance of financial tools. They are simply
going where condition are taking them.
e.g:- One of the employee who is incharge of internal audit asked me a question about bad
current ratio and still company need cash what should he do. I reply only go for long term
debt and try to increase your current ratio but he said I would simply change the amounts
and make current ratio better in books and get loan. That day I oversee the financials and
Sohrab Pakistan

University of Central Punjab Page 25

find out burden of debt on company. This shows mental capability of employees at Farid
sugar mills.

7. No HR department is present in company.
8. The head office is situated in Lahore but usually customers are in rural Punjab, Sindh,
Baluchistan, KPK so it is a bigger problem to transport products which then increase cost
of company.

Sohrab Pakistan

University of Central Punjab Page 26

RECOMMENDATIONS FOR A SUITABLE
COURSE OF ACTION

As I am student of management and internee at Sohrab Pakistan head office; where accounts are
also maintained. I would like to give some recommendations to solve above mentioned
problems.

1. First of all make HR department. Because human asset at baba Farid need extra care all
employees at baba Farid including sales person, accountants etc are experienced as well
as educated to do their work. But if company develop proper HR department they will
make proper payroll system and set proper incentive system as compare to other
competitor sugar mills in Pakistan. With the help of extrinsic reward company can
increase the motivation as a result turnover rate will decrease and cost on hiring and
training will decrease also.

2. Company needs to be professional and there are things in culture that must be eliminated
to make the environment more competitive and professional. Like dress code must be
developed and implement.

3. To avert the exchange rate risk company may consider opting forward options or forward
contracts. This may minimize the realization loss in financial and save money.

4. One thing they have to make clear that taking debt from banks is not always the solution
to support growth potential. The company is facing the result of taking too much loan.
Sohrab Pakistan

University of Central Punjab Page 27

All ratio are adverse and company to my point of view need to better the debt to equity
ratio because 1.75 is an alarming situation for any finance person.

5. Company must decrease its debts in order to decrease the financial cost. Company may
issue new stocks there is a tradeoff between control and profit. Current few shareholders
must understand the need of new stock issuance. Issuing new stock with in some limits
will not affect the decision making power or control within organization.

6. Hiring more educated employee may help making better culture.

7. They have to make plans to made factories in other areas of Pakistan where their sales are
more like southern Punjab, Rural Sindh etc.

Sohrab Pakistan

University of Central Punjab Page 28

Conclusion
Sohrab Pakistan is an important part of Rustam group. Despite some negative aspects about way
of managing employees, Over all company is organized all required departments with proper
qualified employee are present except HR. During my short period internship at Sohrab Pakistan
I understand the difference between real world business and academic. But now I can say that all
concepts that we learn during BBA program have application.
The GM Finance and exports executive were very kind and open to share their work and they
have shared lot of their experiences and practical knowhow of the business. From day one they
gave me important documents to see specially bank statements, tax documents of customers.
Each new day was a great learning for me in the form of some new and interesting tasks. My
internship at Sohrab Pakistan Head Office really gave me the real time sense of workplace. The
staff was very helpful and kind. They always appreciated my work and always guided me if I
was facing any problem.
Now I know how to maintain proper files and understand every document matters and I knew the
need to maintain the copy of every document. Now I can operate office equipment including
photo copier. Importance of income and sales tax clear to me when I prepare list of tax deduction
at sources and e-filling of tax. Exports documentation was the most interesting task that I did
during my internship.
In the end according to my point of view company must understand the importance of their
employees and must establish more employee friendly environment. Last but not least company
must work to decrease the financial cost and debt burden of company.
Although there were many problems which I have identified over there and I have also given
suitable solutions to resolve them but I must conclude my report by saying this was the best
place for me to learn and to apply my mind against the current procedures if the company.
