travelling, exploring, learning, taking risks, chasing
dreams…forever. Paulo Coelho’s ‘The Alchemist’ is a
legendary book, a way to be and an illustration
of this very philosophy of life.

At Xavier Institute of
Management Bhubaneswar’s
(XIMB) PGDBM program, ‘The
Alchemist’ comes alive every day.
In fact, this has been the very
essence of the XIMB inspiration.

The students make a journey.

Then the journey makes them.

It initiates and begins to flower at

DIRECTOR’S MESSAGE

A few days back, I was thinking about the 100% placement

that XIMB achieved in 2009. I found three primary reasons for
this success. The students at XIMB have a strong fundamental
understanding of business and its applications not only in theory
but in practice. Secondly, they are industry-ready professionals
with enormous potential for creativity and innovation. Thirdly,
they are “humane managers”, people who manage with a heart
for the society and uphold values and ethics which inspires our
society to scale greater heights of excellence and prosperity.

In the past one year I have had the opportunity to interact with a
few recruiters. I found a common feedback, “XIMB students inspire
teamwork, excel in performance, are target oriented and have
strong ethical standards.” As the Director of this institute, it gives
me immense pleasure to know that the talent which graduates
from XIMB is not greed driven but value driven. It adds tremendous
vitality to the organizations and ensures that this world becomes a
better place to live in.

It is with great pleasure I welcome you to Xuberance 2010. I am

sure that the bright young students at XIMB would deeply impress
you with their vision for tomorrow, their talent for today and their
ethics forever.

flood-affected children in Baliapada

At XIMB, the philosophy has always been learning through doing.

This is inculcated from the very beginning of the course. During
the 2nd term, students are exposed to a very unique course,
Organizational Behaviour-II which consists of executing a
socially relevant project.

Working in groups, students choose a social problem and

workout the milestones towards providing a unique, sustainable
solution for it. The initiative serves a dual purpose of teaching
the students the importance of teamwork and exposing them
to a different life thus providing a humane edge to the leaders
of tomorrow.

DEVELOPING LEADERSHIP WITH A HUMAN FACE PLACEMENT BROCHURE 2010

The projects undertaken by the group bear a testament to the diversity of the student community at XIMB.

• Providing better healthcare facilities at flood ravaged Betenda village

An innovative healthcare model was envisaged and implemented to address the lack of medical facilities in rural Orissa. The model
consisted of alliances with urban doctors of various specialities, planning their regular visits to the village and issues of free health
services cards to each villagers to access these services.

• XIMB Students build school for underprivileged children.

Students sponsored the construction of a school building in a slum near XIMB through personal efforts and channeling of corporate
funds. The project also helped in providing vocational training and employment support to Class XIIth passouts through a tie up with
Satyam Computers.

“The satisfaction and happiness that the project brought about was evident on the faces of schoolchildren and faculty and
the XIMB students” – The Pioneer

• Making the visually impaired independent

In association with the Orissa Association for the Blind, the project aided the visually impaired in completion of doctorate level
studies, by converting the course material into audio format. The same was also done for Govt. rules pertaining to the handicapped.
Around 2500 minutes of material was converted into audio format.

• Flood Relief Venture at 6 villages in Cuttack District

In partnership with the Rotary Club, students of XIMB photocopied textbooks, school bags, food, clothing and other stationery to the
school children of the flood ravaged villages to enable continuation of their education.

• Bridging the social gap for the inmates of Biju Patnaik open air Jail
This project was aimed at analyzing and understanding whether punishment led to actual reformation of the inmates with 10+ years
of prison service. By extensive interaction the students were able to give the inmates a view of the outside world thereby reducing
any apprehensions that the inmates had about their acceptance back into society

PEDAGOGY

If intuition empowers the

road-map, what empowers
‘intuition’? Condensed
realities as well as possibilities
across the world…Intuition is
a powerhouse of wisdom. But
it’s usually dormant, till one
awakens it.

Pedagogy at XIMB is oriented

to a student’s ‘sense’ of being
and discovery and not to
sheer knowledge. At XIMB
PGDM, education must
evolve to be an instinct.
“Intuition is really a sudden immersion of
the soul into the universal current of life.”

Apart from regular class-room lectures and case studies, the teaching process is
supplemented with seminars, role-plays and group exercises. We also have guest
lectures by industry experts in our regular courses to augment the learning process
and lend a different perspective. Another unique feature is the immersion courses
offered which cater to specific needs of the industry.

Live Projects form an indispensable part of the pedagogy, with the emphasis on
implementation of the concepts in the real world business scenario. Apart from
projects done as part of a course, students take up independent research projects
under the guidance of a professor in the area of their interest.

State-of-the-art IT infrastructure, and access to a plethora of databases available

on the intranet, complement the wholesome learning experience of the students.

Running parallel to the academic curriculum is a foundational course on Emotional

Quotient & Leadership which dwells upon developing authentic humanistic
leadership style, where people feel meaningfully connected to the leader, and thus
will offer support even under the most stressful conditions. The course creates
an understanding of emotional intelligence competencies among the students,
allowing them to make a significant impact on their business and personal lives.

EXCHANGE PROGRAMS

Global Managers As India opens up to a global existence, business schools across the
country are continuously facing the challenge of nurturing ‘global’
managers who can take forward the rapid foray made by Indian
businesses. XIMB has long championed the cause of management
education with an international outlook. Over the years, the Institute
has consciously worked towards creating a unique learning experience
so as to expose its student community to the diversity in culture
and add to the peer learning experience. This multi-cultural learning
environment helps create open-minded, culturally-sensitive managers
who could feel at home anywhere in the world.

In the past years, students from XIMB have also participated in a number of international symposiums and competitions including,
the Rubicon Contest, Germany, the 17th EBS Symposium, Germany, the 12th European Management Conference, Paris, the Harvard
College Asian Business Forum (HCABF), Mumbai, the 11th International Youth Leadership Conference, Prague and the U8 Summit, U.K.
This escalated degree of international exposure gives an added impetus to the strong thought-provoking academic culture at XIMB. The
Institute recognizes how imperative this is and is therefore committed to expand the scope of its current international associations.

In the last academic year, we had 10% of our students going for exchange program in the 5th term. Also, we had 15
exchange students from our partner institutes coming to XIMB. Further, to facilitate and strengthen the exchange process XIMB has a
dedicated International Relations Center (IRC), which acts as XIMB’s interface with the world abroad.

XAVIER INSTITUTE OF MANAGEMENT, BHUBANESWAR

BHUBANESWAR
The modern capital of Orissa and the “Temple Metropolis of India” epitomizes the fine balance of restoring tradition and encouraging
change. In fact, the ‘new’ Bhubaneswar with its modern buildings and extensive infrastructure perfectly complements its historic
surroundings.
Currently, the city is witnessing rapid industrial growth and is on the radar of some of the nation’s top corporate houses. Leading IT
organisations like Infosys, TCS and Satyam have set up their offices here. This confluence of city’s old world charm and vibrant economy
provides an ideal setting for the country’s most prestigious business schools.
