Typical ADSL Installation

The ADSL Card is primarily installed to provide fast internet access to subscribers of
IRIS system. Each ADSL card can cater to 1 ADSL subscribers. Each card has an
uplin! Ethernet port" #hich can be used for connectin$ to the IS%. There is also a
do#nlin! Ethernet port" #hich is currently not activated. In future" this port can be used
for daisy chainin$ multiple ADSL cards" so that from the IRIS system" there #ill be a
common sin$le uplin! port. Another alternative #ould be to provide an e&ternal Ethernet
s#itch for a$$re$atin$ traffic from all the ADSL line cards and then ta!in$ a common
uplin! from the Ethernet s#itch to the IS% side.
In many cases" the band#idth from the IS% is ta!en in the form of ADSL line from the
IS%. 'ere" the IS% #ill terminate the band#idth usin$ an ADSL modem" #hich #ill
typically have an Ethernet port" #hich can be used for further distribution of band#idth.
The setup #ould be as sho#n belo#(

In some cases" a band#idth mana$er and a billin$ system mi$ht also be re)uired. In these
scenarios" the setup #ill be as sho#n belo#(
In both the above cases" the ADSL subscribers of IRIS have to be allotted uni)ue private

At the subscriber end" the %C #ill be connected to the ADSL modem. If the ADSL
modem has an inbuilt splitter" then there #ould be an R/11 0ac! in the modem" for

The I% address of the %C should be allocated by the system administrator of the IRIS
installation site. This I% Address must be a private I% address and it should be uni)ue for
the installations site.
The $ate#ay I% Address to be defined" depends on the type of installation. If the
installation is of simple type #here no band#idth mana$ers or billin$ system are used"
then the $ate#ay ip address should be the I% address of the ADSL modem" #hich is
provided by the IS%. It should be noted that this I% address is that of the IS%3s ADSL
modem and not the local ADSL modem. This entry #ill be the same in all the subscriber
%Cs
In case band#idth mana$ers and billin$ systems are used"
The D6S server address #ill be provided by the IS%. This entry #ill be the same in all
the subscriber %Cs
The ADSL modem at the subscriber end should be confi$ured in the brid$e mode. The I%
address of the subscriber modem should be different from the I% Address of the IS%
modem. Althou$h I% address is allocated for each subscriber modem" this #ill be used
only for confi$urin$ the modem. 'ence all the subscriber modem in an installation site
can have the same I% address.

Tip( To ensure that the Ethernet lin! bet#een the ADSL modem and the %C is correct"
run pin$ test bet#een the %C and the ADSL modem.

The first step for confi$uration #ould be to confi$ure the I% address of the modem. This
can be done by $oin$ to the LA6 confi$uration pa$e . In this pa$e" the I% address of the
modem can be modified. 7a!e sure that the I% Address of the subscriber modem is
different from that of the IS% modem.

by the modem.

Tip( If the ;%I?;CI values are not confi$ured properly" the ADSL lin! #ill be active but
the data transfer #ill not ta!e place.
After confi$urin$ the AT7 ;C interface" the ne&t step #ould be to confi$ure the E1A
interface. E1A is Ethernet over AT7. This is re)uired for pac!eti@in$ the Ethernet
pac!ets received from the subscriber3s %C to AT7 frames and transportin$ them over the

After completin$ the confi$uration process" the chan$es made in the confi$uration of the
