At 7:55 a.m. on Dec. 7, 1941, almost

200 Japanese aircraft attacked Pearl
Harbor in Hawaii. The raid lasted little
more than one hour but left nearly
3,000 people dead. Almost the entire
U.S. Pacific Fleet was at anchor at the
harbor, and not many ships escaped
damage. Several were disabled or sunk
while 200 U.S. aircraft on the ground were
destroyed. This attack on Pearl Harbor
brought about immediate U.S. entry into
World War II. The Declaration of War was
requested by President Franklin D.
Roosevelt and was approved by the
Congress on December 8, 1941.

Olean Calendars- Archbishop Walsh’s Art Department has
created a 2010 calendar that displays their impression of Olean
buildings, gives a little history of the structure, and tells about
the artist who created the image. The buildings inside the
calendar range from The Palace Theater to a historic rendering
of Bradner Stadium, to Cloud 9, all covered with a view of
State Street as viewed through the eyes of Amanda Whiteman,
a junior at Archbishop Walsh. The calendars can be purchased
at several locations throughout the Olean area. A portion of the
funds will go toward the creation of an Art Department Fund,
with the remainder going toward the Walsh capital fund, to aid
in repairs and renovations throughout the school.
NYS Financial A id for students- Many of St.
Bonaventure’s students will be affected by proposed cuts to
NYS financial aid: a loss of $92,400 in the Tuition Assistance
Program (TAP); about $120 per student who receives TAP;
$23,000 in Bundy Aid; and $29,000 in HEOP funding. Although
higher education funds represent just 8% of the state’s total
general fund budget, the proposed cuts to financial aid for
higher education represent 12% of all proposed spending cuts.
It is already more difficult for students to obtain loans for
education. If enacted, these cuts will make it impossible for
some of their bright, hard-working students to attend college
and will affect their enrollment numbers at St. Bonaventure.
