Course Tile: Advanced Human Growth and Development

Course Description:
Advanced Human Growth and Development explores human development
across the life span, including emotional, physical and cognitive development. This
is an advanced course and it is assumed that students already possess a basic
knowledge and understanding of human development. ey developmental topics
such as adolescence, stages of adulthood are examined. !pecial issues related to
human growth and development will be discussed. "ontemporary issues impacting
the stages will be examined as well as cultural and cross#cultural in$uences.
%xamination of how stage theory must be taken into consideration in program
development will be integrated.

7. Developmental Autobiography: !tudents will re$ect in a paper on their
own development and learning 'ourney and life experiences, demonstrating
how their uni5ue individuality plays into the context of understanding the
similarities that de8ne being human. These papers are of a very personal
nature. )lease feel free to ask 5uestions about this paper if you have
concerns. 3our papers will not be shared with others in the class, and will be
kept absolutely con8dential.
9. Cross Cultural nterview6 To examine the impact of culture on human
growth and development, students will initiate contact with and interview an
adult from di:erent ethnic, racial, and cultural backgrounds. The interviewee
must also be from a di:erent ethnic*cultural background than the interviewer.
!tudents will compare and discuss the di:erences and similarities of the
responses and how the responses are related to culture.
