PATHWAYS CLUSTER DESIGN
At Monterey High School, Career Pathways Clusters and Courses of Study connect learning in the classroom with real-world application outside of school. Each links rigorous academic instruction with technical knowledge and field experience. The ability to provide students with a range of relevant content in a variety of ways is a hallmark of the pathway cluster and course of study approaches. Pathway clusters and courses of study are offered through a number of delivery systems. Based on four guiding principles and four core components, the pathway cluster and courses of study approach maintains the integrity of course majors that prepare students for postsecondary study and careers, while offering communities the ability to center that education around themes that connect directly to their regions economies.
A BETTER MODEL FOR HIGH SCHOOL EDUCATION Guiding Principles
Students can see the relevance of what they are learning. Pathways engage and motivate students by answering the question, Why do we need to learn this? Students are prepared for both college and careernot just one or the other. Pathways help ensure that all students master the knowledge and skills needed for lasting success in the modern economy. Students can pursue a wide range of options after high school. Pathways integrate a rigorous academic curriculum with demanding technical and field-based components and prepare graduates for further education in Californias colleges and universities or for entry into apprenticeships, job training programs, or the military. Students experience measurable gains in learning and earning power. Pathways can improve student outcomes in measurable arenas, including academic achievement, high completion rates, and earning power after graduation.
