LETTER FROM THE TE

Will you help create a
wellness-minded community?

Locally grown: Its not just a great way to enjoy your food, its also a fantastic way to
help your local economy thrive! When you support businesses owned and operated
in your community, you and other area consumers reap the benefits. (We must admit,
though, that were a bit biased: Natures Pathways is a local small business, after all!)
Here are just a few of the great advantages gained from nurturing locally
owned businesses:
A BOOST TO THE LOCAL ECONOMY. Small, local businesses play an
important role in job creation. The staffs of these businesses then have the opportunity to buy from other area companies, maybe even the place where you work.
In fact, when you spend $100 at a locally owned business, 68 of those dollars
stay local, compared to the $43 that stay local when $100 is spent at nonlocally
owned businesses. Those dollars support local police and fire departments, area
manufacturers and service providers, and more!
INSIDE KNOWLEDGE ON WHERE AND HOW YOUR GOODS AND
SERVICES ARE MADE. Locally owned businesses are able to create close rela-

tionships with their customers and provide detailed information about their
products and materials.
DEDICATED NONPROFIT SUPPORT. If youre not fiscally able to donate as
much as you would like, shopping at local businesses can help you support nonprofits in your community. Small businesses actually provide 250 percent more support
than large businesses to nonprofit organizations, according to Sustainable Connections (sustainableconnections.org), a nonprofit proponent of local businesses and
their contribution to a healthy environment and the well-being of all citizens.
A SENSE OF HOMETOWN PRIDE. Local business owners and their staffs
arent just people who provide you your goods and services theyre your
neighbors. And when you support them, you support your community. As a
local business consumer, you know that youre part of something bigger than
yourself something that can be as great as you and others wish it to be.
Youll find many local health and wellness businesses in the pages of this publication. Our authors and advertisers are experts in their fields and committed to doing
whats best for their customers and community: you, your family and your friends.
We encourage you to peruse the pages of Natures Pathways. Were certain
youll find exactly what you need and youll get to foster a healthy local economy
at the same time.

Protect your
arteries with
mesoglycan

By Terry Lemerond

WE ARE IN THE middle of a cardiovascular crisis.

One in every three deaths in America is due to heart disease

or stroke equivalent to 2,200 deaths every day. Heart disease
is also expensive over $400 billion dollars a year in health care
costs and lost productivity. Experts have estimated that if we were
to eliminate heart disease, wed add about 10 years to the average
human lifespan.
Healthy blood vessels, arteries and veins are a crucial factor in
any effort to prevent heart disease, heart attacks, aneurysms and
strokes. However, there are no drugs that will make blood vessels
stronger and resistant to rupture. Fortunately, there is a natural
alternative. It is a clinically studied nutrient called mesoglycan.
Mesoglycan is an excellent source of building blocks called
glycosaminoglycans, or GAGs a vital and necessary component that build the walls of our blood vessels and arteries.
Many factors figure into heart and blood vessel disease, including strokes, but one thing they have in common is the strength
of the blood vessel wall, and the need for uninterrupted, healthy
blood circulation. Again, no drugs make blood vessels stronger.
But mesoglycan can. It slows and even prevents the hardening of
the arteries, and treats diabetic retinopathy, chronic venous insufficiency, and many other circulatory diseases.
Mesoglycan works in many ways and provides a world of
benefits for the entire circulatory system. It builds the foundation
of blood vessel walls, makes them strong yet flexible, and keeps
blood moving through our arteries and blood vessels.

Strengthens arteries, stops clotting,

promotes blood flow

One of the reasons blood clots develop is because of a protein called

fibrin. Aside from helping build the structure of blood vessels and
arteries, mesoglycan also inhibits the effects of fibrinogen an
8

Natures Pathways | August 2014

inflammatory marker and precursor to fibrin and the abnormal

blood clots that cause heart attacks or strokes.
Mesoglycan also improves blood flow. Consider the clinical
studies of 18 patients with heart disease (either general atherosclerosis or from diabetes). In a nine-day trial, mesoglycan showed
healthy anti-clotting activity after just one dose! Repeated administration showed similar effects, so it was an ongoing benefit.
Another similar clinical trial involving patients dealing with
atherosclerotic disease (general or with noninsulin-dependent
diabetes) showed an improvement in blood flow after just 30 days.
For those who have suffered a transitory ischemic cerebral
attack (TIAs), a temporary stoppage of blood often called a ministroke, mesoglycan is an excellent natural medicine.
Transitory or transient ischemic attacks are considered
warning strokes, and point to potentially debilitating or fatal
problems in the future. In a clinical study, mesoglycan was able
to stop the recurrence of these clots, so it provides real hope for
anyone at risk of stroke.
For those who have already suffered from a stroke, mesoglycan speeds recovery and helps manage signs of the condition. In
an open trial, mesoglycan improved mood, autonomy, memory
and emotional lability the sharp, extreme changes in mood or
emotional responses in those with a history of stroke.

Stops chronic venous insufficiency

Mesoglycan strengthens veins in the legs and relieves symptoms

of chronic venous insufficiency (CVI), stops venous ulcers and

helps prevent the potentially damaging and dangerous clotting

in the veins known as deep vein thrombosis (DVT). Clinical
tests showed that mesoglycan stopped the recurrence of DVT, a
normally common occurrence. Additionally, it relieved the pain,
bruising and overall mobility of those with CVI.

industry, both in retail sales and in dietary supplement formulation and manufacturing. He hosts a radio talk show that is archived at www.TerryTalksNutrition.com. The site also features his weekly educational columns and other valuable health resources.

You dont need to be a statistic in the ongoing cardiovascular crisis in

America. Nature often has a better way and mesoglycan is part of it.
Its estimated that the human body has about 60,000 miles of
blood vessels, all of which have and need mesoglycan in
order to function. This includes our entire cardiovascular system,
including arteries, veins and other microcirculatory vessels in
delicate spaces like the eyes and brain. Protect yourself by adding
mesoglycan supplementation to your daily regimen. It can make a
world of difference.

or the past few years, it has been

all over the news: Common dog
treats, often chicken jerkies, are
poisoning dogs all over the United States.
Dogs Naturally Magazine reports that by
October 2013, as reported to the U.S. Food
and Drug Administration, 3,600 dogs had
been sickened and 580 dogs succumbed to
death after consuming common chicken
jerky treats found in most stores.

Harsh preservatives, such as propylene

glycol, or even artificial colorings
can cause distress in our animals.
The common factor of this simple-looking chicken jerky? The treats were all made
in China, where there are little to no regulations in food production.

As pet owners, we would like to think

all the products sold for our pets are regulated or tested to show that they are safe for
consumption. Many times, working with
pets and helping their owners choose the
right products for them, I have heard the
question, Why would they sell this product
if it wasnt good for my dog/cat/etc.?
It is the same when we make healthy
choices for ourselves. Not everything we
find in a grocery store will be healthy, or
even good, for us, but it is still sold for
human consumption. Many people are
becoming more aware of where their
food is sourced from, whether it is local
or coming from overseas, or even what
company is producing it and what their
standards are. Why should we not be
informed for our pets as well?

What to look for

First and foremost, when finding a

consumable product for your pet, even in
treats, it is important to read the ingredient label to see what is in the treat. Harsh
preservatives, such as propylene glycol, or
even artificial colorings can cause distress
www.naturespathways.com

in our animals. Many pets might show

allergy symptoms such as itching, scratching, etc. Other animals might exhibit more
severe symptoms such as dehydration,
loss of appetite or lethargy, especially if a
product is a consumable that is fed often.
Sometimes, the simpler the food, the better
it can be for everyone.
The next step is to study the packaging
to find where the product is coming from.
Some companies might say Made in the
USA, but it might mean the product is
only packaged in this country, and the
actual food might be made elsewhere.
Finding this information is not difficult. If
the company only lists a headquarters in
the United States, most will have contact
information either email or telephone.
Use email or call to inquire at the company
where their product is coming from, what
regulations there are, and what ingredients
compose it and where those ingredients
come from. Most companies are willing to
divulge this information to their customers. Companies who hesitate to answer
such questions might have products that
might best be avoided when it comes to
your pet.
If commercial treats are not an option,
then there are always ways to make your
own! Substitute biscuits with fresh fruits
and vegetables, or small pieces of plain
meat such as chicken or liver. We often
know where our own foods are coming
from, and many foods we eat are completely
acceptable for dogs to eat as well. Just avoid
the known toxins like grapes, onions and
macadamia nuts to name a few.
The chicken jerky scare has made most
of us think differently about what we feed
our pets, but sometimes we cannot resist
the temptation to feed them treats we find
available everywhere we go such as the
grocery store, discount stores or even the
bank. But knowing about these risks and
being better informed can lead to a healthier, happier life for you and your pet!

Discovering
your healing
pathway

By Richard Hanhardt MS, MBA, BCSLC

We all live in three forms: body, mind and soul (or spirit). This is
a consistent belief through many traditions. The first goal is for us
to maximize our abilities in each area and then to bring the three

into balance. This balance brings us to a place of happiness and

peace. Emotional problems will interfere with our ability to maximize body, mind, and spirit and to achieve this balance. These
problems, therefore, must be resolved for us to begin our journey
toward feeling truly well.
There are many approaches to body that have the focus of maximizing its functioning. Yoga, meditation, reiki, massage and many
others exist now in multiple forms. With the addition of nutrition
and exercise, there are many choices of how to approach the body
with the goal of balance and strength.

ne of the truths of living life is that we will at some point

be injured emotionally. These injuries are part of the
nature of who we are and stem from the reality that we
are vulnerable and we must deal with opposing forces that arise
from our desires. Of course we dont like to be in pain or to suffer.
But how can we find a way out of our pain? We must first become
comfortable with the idea that many others have gone before us
and discovered pathways that have worked for them. Unique and
individual people must walk each path, and the first key discovery
on your journey is that there is a way that will be right for you.
Lets look at how to find your way.

www.naturespathways.com

There also are many choices for the mind, including multiple
courses for continuing education, programs that guide self-study,
and countless programs that can be accessed in multiple new electronic formats.
The options for spiritual development also are available in many
forms, including traditional and nontraditional.
All of our efforts in these areas, however, depend on a reasonably clear emotional sense of self.

A guide to emotional healing

So, if you are beginning your journey and you know that you need
to heal emotionally to begin or proceed, there is good news. Just
as multiple forms of healing for body, mind, and spirit are now
available, multiple and personal forms of emotional healing are
also available to you. They include:
Personal symbol study
Dream work
Discovery of your personal story and rebuilding it if necessary
Meditation and meditative prayer
Study of the writings of the great spiritual and emotionally
healing writers of history and the present day
Active imagination (only to be done with a trained
professional)
Focusing
Lectio divina (reading in an inspired way)
Work with a spiritually guided counselor or life coach
Many other techniques that involve the body in the work

Are you ready?

Perhaps the hardest part for many is beginning. It is important to

know that you are already on a path of healing if you are reading
this seriously and have a sense, even if it is buried deep inside, that
things could and must be better. There is hope.
If you go to a counselor or coach, the first thing you might want
to do is to tell that person your story.
If you do not want to seek help from another, you could begin
somewhat the same way: by writing your story. As you write, be
aware of any themes or memories that seem to emerge or gain
importance for you. You also may want to begin to meditate or
use meditative prayer with these pieces of your story. Be especially aware of emotions that emerge in this early work and write
them down. You may search online for the meanings of symbolic
images that emerge. An assessment with a spiritual counselor may
assist your beginning.
The most important activity is to begin. Do not give in to the
sense that there is nothing to do, or that nothing will help or heal
you. Your body, mind and spirit all have a knowledge that you can
live a happy and peaceful life that is nicely balanced between the
three. You deserve this balance and the benefits that flow from it.
The rule for beginning is simple: Start where you are.
Rich is the Executive Director of The Sacred Bond Center. He has practiced in the psychotherapy field for 43 years and now has dedicated his
work to what he believes is truly healing: awakening the spiritual for
clients through multiple pathways. He is the author of Sacred Bond

The Sacred Bond Center is focused on rare

opportunities for wisdom transformation and
emotional healing. These activities are not
available in typical mental health settings.

Mowing:
The grass can

lectric, gas, push, riding tractor, zero-turn, mulching,

bagging and more: this is a short list of a wide range of
available lawn mower varieties. In fact, lawn mowing
equipment sales top $3 billion each year. Green lawns dot the
country, surrounding most climate-friendly homes, apartments,
condominiums, businesses, parks and playing fields. Chances are,
where there is a lawn, there is a mower.

Proper lawn length is taller than a

golf course green, but will provide
surprisingly deep, dense root
growth, lower maintenance, higher
drought tolerance and an unfriendly

Mowing height affects whether grass will thrive or struggle to

survive. Lawns are made of a multitude of individual grass blades.
Mowing height, combined with environmental conditions and
nutrition, causes blades to grow more densely or sparsely. Each
time you mow or dont mow, a message determining what is
needed for survival is sent to the lawns root system.
Moisture and nutrition are stored in the grass blade. Cutting
too short (scalping) or not mowing depletes availability of basic
needs, resulting in short, shallow roots with compromised
immune systems, sparse or spindly blade growth, and lackluster
color: creating a perfect place to cultivate pests and disease.
Remember to mow no more than one-third of the blade length
per cut and mow frequently enough to leave the remaining length
at least 3 to 4 inches high in summer months, and up to 1 inch
shorter in early spring or late fall (to deter mold, fungus, mole
and vole damage).
Mowing higher is always better if you prefer not to change cutting
height! During harsh weather conditions, mowing height can make
the difference between grass dormancy and demise. Proper lawn
length is taller than a golf course green, but will provide surprisingly
www.naturespathways.com

deep, dense root growth, lower maintenance, higher drought tolerance and an unfriendly abode for weeds and pests.

Mow dry

If at all possible, dance in the rain but dont mow. Damp or wet grass
is slippery; hinders a clean, sharp, and even cut; and is conducive to
clumping clippings. Soft, wet ground is also easily compacted under
foot or mower tires, which leaves uneven depressions or ruts in the
soil, resulting in more frequent need of soil aeration.
Additionally, the chlorophyll from newly cut grass tends to
bleed and stain green anything it contacts. You dont want to be
literally green, and neither does your driveway.

Leave the clippings

Clippings are the top one-third portion of grass that is ideal to

mow. Remember no scalping!
Clippings are packed with moisture and nutrients, which your
turf loves! Regularly mowed lawns, cut when dry, should not
clump and will leave behind a beneficial free dinner for your turf!
Clippings break down and get reabsorbed by the lawn and beneficial soil microbes.

Understand need and mow at the best time

of day

Lawns grow at different speeds during changing seasons and

weather conditions. Monitor lawn growth to ensure frequency of
cutting does not scalp the lawn (remove more than a third of blade
height.) Mow less often during times of slow growth, extreme heat
or cold and drought.
Mowing during the cooler parts of the day saves energy and
wear and tear on your mower. Your lawn will thank you, too!

Sharpen the blades

Brown, torn or ripped tips of turf are usually the result of dull
mower blades, leaving unsightly, injured turf with increased
susceptibility to disease, fungus and pests. Excess energy is needed
for repair, leaving lawns in decline.
Grasses benefit from a clean, sharp slice. Sharpen mower blades
at least once a year and preferably three times: spring, summer
and fall. Some people prefer to purchase an extra set of mower
blades to switch out and sharpen alternately, or have three sharpened sets on hand and ready to go. Resharpen over winter months
and youre set again for spring!
Following simple techniques can help you, your lawn and the
environment to smile while you mow smarter not harder.
Healthy lawns use less energy, water, nutrition and chemical intervention, while producing cleaner air and water quality. Favorable
conditions for turf growth lead to unfavorable conditions for
weeds, insects and disease!

Trim your
waistline
Outrageous obliques

By Hope Zvara

s a fitness professional for over a decade, I have pretty much

seen it all, especially when it comes to core-based exercise.
When you consider trying to bring some more attention to
your midsection, a few things are important to consider:
Core work flat on your back is out! Think about it, how do
you spend your day? Upright! So doesnt it make more sense
to work with gravity in that manner?
Focus on feeling, rather than doing. Find guides that really
help you tune into not only what you should be doing, but
what you should and shouldnt be feeling.
Work from the inside out. No matter what you do, everything is
core work. That being said, it all starts with a conscious pelviccore (pelvic floor muscles plus deep core muscles) contraction.
We have a deep oblique called the internal oblique and an
external oblique. These muscles overlap each other.
We need our obliques for many things: They offer support and
stability for the back and hips. When developed properly, they
improve spinal support, movement and function, as well as the
relationship between the rib cage and pelvis. Strength to twist, bend
sideways and rotate comes a great deal from our amazing obliques.
Here is one of my favorite tributes to our famous obliques:
1. Start in a kneeling position (be sure to pad your knees if
necessary), and grab your weight (if using one).
2. Find neutral pelvis (your pubis bone and hip bones should
run parallel with the wall you are facing).
3. Contract your pelvic-core muscles (think bathroom muscles
and torso muscles, much like when you cough).
4. Steadily extend your right leg out to the side, turning your
right foot parallel to your knee. Be sure to anchor your foot
into the floor.
5. Holding your weight in front of your chest, draw your elbows
wide and relax your shoulders.
16

Natures Pathways | August 2014

6. Inhale, tip to the left as far as you can control, without folding

in your left hip.

7. Exhale, feel your waist (obliques) carry you back up with control.

You should not feel any downward pressure into your pelvic
floor when you lift (remember to keep those muscles strong).
8. Repeat this process 10 times on each side. After you have
repeated this on both sides, go back to your weaker side and
complete the process again for a 2-to-1 ratio (weaker to stronger). If the weight creates too much tension work, do this exercise without added weight in front and instead hold opposite
elbows with your forearms at chest height.
Have fun and keep at it!

Feeling
stuck?

By Kathy Clegg, MA, CDC, IASHA

HOW MANY TIMES do you use the word stuck?

Im stuck in traffic.
Im stuck at work/home.
Im stuck in a rut.
Im stuck in bed with (ailment).

Stuck is a paradigm that shows up for us when were out of alignment and unable to get in the flow. Its like coming up against a
wall or a road sign, presenting us with the opportunity to make
another choice. When were up against that wall, our conditioned
response is to push harder. I just need to work harder/longer; I
need to be aggressive and move through this traffic jam; I need
to figure out my lack of money, time and relationships. If this
sounds like you, consider it a message from the universe telling
you to shift and go in another direction.
Shifting our thinking from the way weve been doing things
most of our lives is not easy. We often dont even recognize it.

As a coach and hand analyst, a look at someones hands often

shows a marking at the end of their headline that goes round
and round, just like their thoughts. I have one of these markings myself, and its going away! Yes, as we change how we live,
think and behave, the lines of our hands change. Its physical
evidence encouraging us to keep going, keep on the path, and
keep aligned with whats going to lead us to manifestation and
put us in the flow of our life. Before I really understood this, I
questioned why Id get into flow and then slowly or suddenly
come to a halt, like having one foot on the gas pedal and one on
the brake. I found myself in overwhelm with so many ideas,
creations and wants in my head; I didnt think I could manage
to manifest them all without pushing through to do what others
told me I had to do to make it happen. I went into a tizzy of overwhelm. Then, one wintery day, I found myself slipping on ice,
fracturing my ankle. For the next month, I went nowhere just
the bedroom, bathroom and kitchen. Spiraling into depression

Its easy to get off our path

when we get distracted by
things that take up our time
but have little to do with

and blocked from doing, I realized it was an opportunity for
me to stay quiet, experience stillness and go within to find my
own steps for coming back into alignment.
If you find yourself feeling stuck, read the following situations
and see if one or more might help you get unstuck.

5 blocks of overwhelm:

1. Disconnection from intuition: Listening to the advice of

others, or taking on too many masters, disconnects us from

our own knowing. Doing this relinquishes our own power
and understanding of whats right for us. Also, notice who
youre spending the most time with, whether via the news,
blogs, Facebook, in quality of conversations, etc.
2. Underdeveloped decision-making skills: Not everyone
has learned a method for finding clarity about whats really
important for them. There are several systems. Using the
hand-analysis method of knowing your life purpose makes
alignment with purpose your priority. It allows the clarity and
ease of merely asking, Is this in alignment with my purpose?
This allows us to create space and avoid busy addiction.
3. Avoid bright shiny objects: Its easy to get off our path
when we get distracted by things that take up our time but
have little to do with our goals and dreams.
4. Question the beliefs that limit you: We get stuck by adhering to the programs we run, creating internal conflict which,
in turn, can shut us down. Examples of some common limiting beliefs are: I cant afford it; dont ask for too much or youll
be disappointed; dont question authority; asking for something is selfish; family comes first; men cant be trusted; love
never lasts. Ask the questions Byron Katie, author of Loving
What Is suggests: Is it true? Can you absolutely know its true?
How do you react and what happens when you believe that
thought? Who would you be without that thought?
5. Dont become attached to illusion: Over-attachment to
the illusion of what we say we want can keep us from surrendering so it can come differently. This is a matter of having
faith and trusting the timing.

Multiple
sclerosis and
chiropractic
care

By Dr. Pat McCann

ultiple sclerosis (MS) is an autoimmune disease in

which the central nervous system, particularly the
nerves of the spinal cord and brain, are damaged by the
individuals own immune system.
The symptoms can vary widely from one person to another;
while MS can be a moderate inconvenience to one person, it can
be life-changing to others. According to the National Multiple
Sclerosis Society, 2.3 million people worldwide have MS.
Our central nervous system is comprised of nerves that are the
bodys messenger system, telling our body how to function optimally. A tissue called myelin, which surrounds every nerve and
helps in the transmission of nerve impulses, or messages, covers
these nerves. Nerve impulses control the function of every cell,
tissue and organ in our body.
Individuals who are diagnosed with MS have a buildup of scar
tissue (sclerosis) in the brain and/or spinal cord. This sclerosis
forms when the surrounding layer of myelin around the nerves is
destroyed. This process is called demyelination. When the myelin
is absent, the electrical messages from the brain and spine are
disrupted and the brain is unable to properly communicate with
the body, causing the multiple symptoms of MS.
There are no known cures for MS. Traditional treatment with
drug therapy can sometimes slow the progression. Many individuals are using alternative therapies and treatments to help with their
symptoms, with chiropractic care being one of the most utilized.
Chiropractors remove interference to the nervous system and
restore proper function from the brain to the body by removing
misalignments (subluxations) of the spine. Subluxations affect the
messages from the brain to the body as well as messages from the
body back to the brain. By making sure we have proper alignment
in the spine, we can keep our nervous system function optimally,
which can help manage symptoms of MS. With state-of-theart technology, chiropractors can gauge the functionality of the
nervous system.
One case study in the Journal of Upper Cervical Research
reported on an adult female diagnosed with MS. She presented
with pain and numbness from MS: neck pain, balance issues,
20

Natures Pathways | August 2014

fatigue, ringing in the ears and right knee pain. She was adjusted
for a period of 44 visits. At the patients 30th visit, she reported a
90 percent improvement in her neck pain, 90 percent improvement in her numbness, 70 percent improvement in her fatigue
and 90 percent improvement in her balance since her initial
visit. This positive response in the case suggests that chiropractic adjustments may have a positive effect on the symptoms of
patients with MS.
Your nervous system is the master system of your body as it
controls and coordinates the proper function of every cell, tissue
and organ. If your nervous system is not functioning at its best, then
neither are you. How well is your nervous system working for you?
Do you have subluxations affecting how well your brain is communicating with your body? Isnt it time to find out?

The call to
self-evolve

By Helen Borth

ave you heard the call or felt the pull to one of the most
exciting movements happening throughout the world?
The call has to do with personal change and spiritual upliftment. This unique approach helps us to discover new
concepts, ones that are so uplifting that they will remodel our
thinking and reform our lives.
Now in 2014, humanity has experienced a great deal of helpful
new approaches in the area of dieting, meditation and natural
healing products, etc. These bits of information are welcomed and
have changed many of our attitudes and opinions. This brings us
to the call to self-evolve, which is to welcome a greater understanding of the basics and power of thought. Those of us who have
spent time in the world of self-evolving will be the first to say this
trip is an inside job because we have placed into practice helpful
meta concepts. Meta is a word referring to going beyond or transcending what is presently understood. Meta thoughts have the
power to change past thinking patterns because they help us feel a
greater freedom on all levels: physical, mental and spiritual.
Here is how it works: A meta phrase challenges the ego minds
learned patterns. The truth is, everyone has collected thoughts and
beliefs concerning health, wellness and certain rules to live life by.
No matter what, it always seems to come back to thinking. Here is
an example of a meta concept put forth by a number of authors,
sages and Internet YouTube videos: What you think about comes
about. Our personal challenge lies in waking up to our own thinking by mentally using this meta phrase as a powerful tool or pointer.
For example, if we are experiencing a particular physical problem,
it would be very helpful to not continually talk about it. Why? First,
we need to be aware that every thought produces a vibration which
then travels directly into our aura and then out into the collective
mind. Secondly, not only does the vibration produce an effect on
our body, it has the ability to draw the same energy to us from the
collective mind. Now the problem has been amplified, maybe many
www.naturespathways.com

times over. Eckhart Tolle shares an idea about this process in one
of his stories. He says physical-problem thought frequencies are
like bubbles floating around in empty space. When the energy of
a physical problem is housed in our mind, it will resonate with the
energy inside one of these bubbles. We easily pick it up. It amplifies
the original irritation. This naturally happens because of another
rule of thought: Like attracts like. These two rules and many other
helpful meta pointers are an important part of self-evolving. If this
bit of material is of interest to you, follow up on the Internet by
looking for videos on YouTube that will help in grasping the idea
and putting it into practice.
There are many more meta concepts for those actively searching to self-evolve. It is known that making changes in our
present way of thinking is one of the most positive actions we
can take for ourselves. By using the suggested phrases or one of
the many others, we personally take charge of change. After all,
change is all there is. We may not feel comfortable with change
because our ego wants things to stay the same, but change is
not something we need to fear. It would be wise if we could
welcome it. After all, nothing in the world would ever grow or
blossom (plants, trees, animals, etc.) and not one of us would
ever move to become greater without change. To be on the
journey to self-evolve means change is the bottom line. In time,
it is so welcomed because the whole body feels more at ease,
experiences greater freedom and without a doubt experiences a
deserving and natural uplifted spirit.
Helen Borth was the first reiki master in Wisconsin in 1980. The
director and cofounder of the Institute of Self Awareness (nonprofit
in 1991) and a class instructor, she received a bachelors degree from
UW-Milwaukee in 1958. She has years of research and application
in the field of transformation and spiritual empowerment. Please

Say what you

mean, mean
what
you
say

By Jill E. Greinke, MSW, LCSW, SAC

Hey, bro, you know what I am saying? The Urban Dictionary

n January 2011, Maya Angelou, who passed away in May of this

year, was a guest on Oprah Winfreys Master Class. During this
life class, Maya Angelou said, I believe in the power of words.
Words can uplift us and words can tear us apart. Many of us are
familiar with the nursery rhyme: Sticks and stones may break my
bones but words will never harm me. This rhyme fits in with points
Maya Angelou made regarding the power of words and brings us to
the first important point: We need to know what we are saying!
Between the ages of 3 months and 3 years, most children have
begun developing a large vocabulary of words. When studying
human growth and development, psychotherapists learn a lot about
how powerful a childs environment is while going through his or her
initial developmental years. Birth to 3 is a critical time for children as
their brains are developing and much of their personality is becoming established. Words used directly or indirectly are very influential
when used around children. They learn by mimicking what their
primary caregivers and others around them are saying and doing.
Without knowing the force of words, it is impossible to know more.
Confucius

Of course, this is how we all got our start in life and this holds true
anywhere in the world.
Within the Judeo-Christian Bible, there are several passages
that link supernatural power to words. For example, the Christian
New Testament says that the Word is God and that the Word
was made flesh.
Bruce H. Lipton, Ph.D., a stem cell biologist, taught at the University of Wisconsins School of Medicine. He performed pioneering studies at Stanford University, and authored and co-authored
numerous books. In one of his books, The Biology of Belief, Dr.
Lipton and fellow researchers cite what they feel are relevant points
in which quantum physics and spirituality cross paths:
1. Atoms appear out of thin air.
2. The universe is not material, but rather mental and spiritual.
3. Thoughts (silent words) can activate or inhibit the cells function-producing proteins.
4. Harnessing the power of your mind (words) can be more
effective than drugs.
5. Each of your 50 trillion-plus cells must acquiesce control to
the brain.
6. Biological behavior can be controlled by invisible forces,
including thoughts or words.
In other words, the biblical concepts and scientific theory mirror
the second important point: The word is living in and around
us, whether found within the concepts of spirituality or science.
When you dont cover up the world with words and labels, a sense
of the miraculous returns to your life that was lost a long time
ago when humanity, instead of using thought, became possessed
by thought.
Eckhart Tolle, A New Earth: Awakening to Your Lifes Purpose
And finally the third important point: There is action that manifests from our words.
Returning to theories of quantum physics, our thoughts create
a physical reality bound up in space and time. Our thoughts are

like invisible words. So whether we think them or speak them,
they have a great deal of power and therefore we need to find ways
to become more conscious of them.
We are shaped by our thoughts; we become what we think.
Buddha
When I work with clients either in holistic psychotherapy or
coaching, I am always reiterating how relevant thoughts and
words are when wanting to manifest anything. Most people
subconsciously manifest their realities without even realizing it.
Therefore, we need to be mindful that we can create our realities from a healthy, conscious place within us versus an unhealthy,
unconscious one. All of us have the power to create the best reality
for ourselves and for our world.

history. Perhaps you are part of this group or are one of the 76
million American baby boomers (born between 1945 and 1964)
with Millennial children.
According to online Investopedia, many Millennials have an
increasingly global mindset, with factors such as social responsibility and the environment frequently playing a key role in where
Millennials place their money.
Numerous studies have been conducted in an attempt to determine characteristics specific to those of this age group, who have
been molded by such events as 9/11 and the Great Recession of 2008,
which left over 15 percent of these 20-somethings out of work. Banks
and other financial institutions are beginning to cater to Gen Yers,
whose spending, saving and investing habits are even now beginning
to define how the world will do business in the future.
The most educated generation in history, these 20-somethings
are known to be confident, opinionated, fashionable, brash and
open to change most certainly dont suffer from low selfesteem. If not satisfied with the way they are being treated, theyll
shift to a new workplace, a new service provider, a new brand.
This is an age group that seeks, and even demands, instant gratification. The Internet, which they grew up with, is the primary
source of information for Millennials.
A recent survey conducted by the American Institute of Certified Public Accountants showed that although pay and compensation are still very important for most Millennials, other issues
include autonomy, respect and being treated fairly. A large part of
the Millennial generation prizes work-life balance, giving back and
having new experiences as highly as they do pure achievement.
As part of its program aimed at educating and assisting Millennials in their financial futures, Milwaukee-based Northwestern Mutual Life Insurance Company conducted a study in 2013
that showed Millennials are much more likely than previous
www.naturespathways.com

generations to call themselves highly disciplined planners. Their

investment philosophy mirrors their desire to enrich not only
themselves, but the world around them. Nevertheless, the majority of Gen Y believes that retirement is too far away to think about,
but if they continue this thinking, they may be forced to forfeit the
material benefits earlier generations enjoy in retirement, such as
houses, cars and vacations.
Assorted studies indicate that Millennials tend to invest their
time and money in technology, their health, image and personal
interests, such as the environment and other causes. In addition,
Gen Yers are more likely than baby boomers to want help
managing their money and tend to seek the input of professional
advisors, being more interested in having personal connections with those who manage their money, despite their comfort
with the use of mobile and online technology to perform many
investing functions. Due to the considerable influence of social
media, Millennials are likely to conform to the financial habits of
their peers and post financial milestones, such as home and car
purchases, for all to see and envy.
Many Gen Yers have a buy-now, pay-later mentality, which
means they are using debt to finance their lifestyles, and are less
likely to save before they spend. Their money management skills
tend to be focused on getting by instead of getting ahead.
A U.S. News & World Report survey indicated that many
Generation Y members are more concerned with paying their
rent and cell phone bills and have not learned to set aside money
for insurance or savings. In addition, a large portion of Gen Y has
been subsidized by parents retirement savings and has made no
plans for their own retirement.
Most young adults change their savings and spending habits
after seeking financial advice, according to a recent survey from
TIAA-CREF, a financial services company. Gen Yers will take
action to improve their money situation even when theyre facing
student loan debt and underemployment. The survey found that
Gen Y is most likely to monitor savings more closely (71 percent)
or change their spending habits (66 percent) after getting financial advice, compared with their older peers, as well as surveyed
Americans overall. When it comes to financial planning, Gen Y is
most interested in interacting with an advisor online (61 percent),
as well as attending webinars (59 percent) and live seminars (58
percent), compared with surveyed Americans overall (45 percent,
47 percent and 46 percent, respectively).
The bottom line: Regardless of your age, its never too late to
start watching your spending, saving a portion of your income
and investing for the future.

Have you seen these Millennials?

A Boston Consulting Group survey of 4,000 Millennials

found the following six overarching stereotypes classified their varied approaches not just toward spending, but
money in general:
1. HIP-ENNIALS: About 26 percent of those surveyed
were optimistic but cautious, and truly believed they
can have a positive impact on the world. This group
tends not to splurge, but spends on things that give a
percent back to charity.
2. MILLENNIAL MOMS: At 22 percent, Millennial
Moms are both the oldest and the most affluent of the
groups. They spend lots of time online and love to
offer their own, and read others, opinions. When it
comes to money, they value health, travel and pampering their children. They believe you cant put a price on
health, a babys happiness or the familys future.
3. ANTI-MILLENNIALS: There are 16 percent of AntiMillennials who are the opposite of most Millennial
stereotypes. Traditional, hard-working and frugal,
their top concerns are their family and their workrelated goals. They value comfort and success first and
foremost, though in striving for achievement, they
may sacrifice their health versus spending time and
money to treat themselves now and then.
4. GADGET GURUS: Only 13 percent of Millennials are
obsessive and adept with the latest and greatest technology. Theyre laidback, but also pride themselves on being
in the know. For example, when Facebook acquired Instagram, they took to Twitter in droves to appear cool. On
the whole, this group tends to be more male than female.
Theyre also single, self-confident and affluent.
5. CLEAN AND GREEN MILLENNIALS: 10 percent
of Gen Y are Clean and Green Millennials who are
cause-driven, extremely positive and environmentally minded. Their money tends to go to supporting
not just themselves, but everyone around them. For
instance, these Millennials love hemp-based, recycled,
eco-friendly products. They buy books and magazines
on green living and are always willing to spend more
for products that are good for the world.
6. OLD-SCHOOL MILLENNIALS:
Old-School
Millennials are the last 10 percent of the Gen Y population. They are much less into technology, are conservative spenders and, unlike the majority of their peers,
prefer real-life to online interactions. In other words,
this isnt the set updating their Facebook before theyve
had breakfast. Old-School Millennials love to invest
in experiences versus products. Vacations, comedy
nights, dining out and concerts are the big-ticket items
Old-School Millennials spend on. They also tend to
buy books rather than reading (free) blogs.

Discover
a healthy yard
and planet
Be Green Lawn Care explains
how your lawn can
be truly green
BY REBECCA BENTZ

Its hard to imagine a more dedicated friend of the earth than Patti
Beres, owner of Be Green Lawn Care. In fact, once you hear her
passion for environmentally minded approaches to lawn and yard care
and life in general you might begin to wonder if chlorophyll runs
through her veins.
You see, Patti and the rest of the Beres clan are on a mission to not
only beautify Delafield-area yards, but spread awareness of organic,
earth-friendly treatments and techniques. Rather than using dangerous chemicals, Be Green transforms lawns with something much more
powerful: knowledge.

An environmentally minded mission grows

Beres love for the earth took root early.

As a little girl, I would lie in the lawn and talk to the bugs, or I would
listen through a stethoscope to a tree and try to hear its heartbeat, Beres
recalls. Ive always had a profound awe about the creation we live in.
Yet despite her love of plants and animals, as well as a personal connection to the industry both of Beres parents work in land care and her

husband has immersed himself in the green industry for 27 years she
never really intended to get into the business herself. Her motivation to
eventually do so, however, could come from no better source: her family.
It was a February day four years ago when Beres and her children took
a late winter walk and encountered a rather strange sight: a lawn care
company applying fertilizer to a lawn at a time of year when grass isnt
able to absorb anything except perhaps more snow. Fertilizing so early
wasnt good for the lawn, the customer or the earth, Beres explains.
When I saw that, I said to my kids, I just cant believe theyre
out doing that this early. If we had a lawn care company, we would
do such a better job. My oldest son, who was about 14 at the time,
looked at me and said, Well, Mom, why dont we?
At that moment, Beres knew what she had to do. A rescuer of
bumble bees and family preacher of the benefits of composting, it
was time to expand her smaller-scale environmental efforts outside
her home and daily life.
If I didnt do something, I wasnt teaching my kids a very good
lesson, she says.

Beres and her children went straight home and sent an email to
just about everyone in Beres contacts, explaining their natural lawn
care initiative. The gambit paid off.
We immediately got 40 responses, Beres remembers. We started
our first year with about 40 clients and never really imagined it would
grow to the extent it has. Now were reaching upwards of 400 clients in
our fourth year of business and its just been an amazing experience.
Be Green owes its tenfold growth in part to word-of-mouth recommendation. The reason customers are so pleased might be because
Be Green takes the time to understand each lawns needs and each
clients wishes.

Looking at lawns as living organisms

Some landscapers approach service by dousing turf with nitrogenbased fertilizer, which provides instant gratification but not long-lasting health, or to use harsh chemical compounds to kill weeds.
Its kind of like a person eating raw sugar to get energy. You get
a big energy boost and you feel good for a little while, but all of a
sudden, you run out of energy, Beres explains. That sugar boost
depleted other areas of your body.
Nitrogen-based fertilizer works on grass in much the same way,
Beres says. The grass will green up immediately, but this healthy
appearance wont last.
Within a day or two, you have this beautiful color in your lawn
and the weeds are disappearing, and you think everything is great
Then the sugar high or the nitrogen levels run out. Within two
to three weeks, the grass is actually looking worse than it did before
because the nutrients have been depleted.
Lack of nutrients allows for weeds, diseases and pests to infiltrate
a lawn, Beres explains. Worse yet, nitrogen-based fertilizer that fails
to absorb can make its way into storm sewers and eventually local
waterways.
Be Greens approach is different. The company uses absorbable
nutrients designed to foster long-term health.
We give a nutrition boost to your lawn. Instead of eating raw
sugar, its like eating healthy, organic salad, Beres says. This helps
a lawns root system its immune system, really grow stronger.
Grass with a healthy root system is better able to resist drought and
is thicker, leaving little room for weeds and pests to gain a foothold.
Be Green uses a simple recipe Beres calls the three Rs: the right
product, at the right time, at the right rate. The exact composition
of the recipe, however, varies from lawn to lawn and seasonally. It all
depends on the grass and plants specific needs.
We get to know your lawn, Beres says. When you have a
professional walking on your lawn every five to eight weeks and giving
you an assessment on what your lawn needs right at that moment,
its not just a blanket profile. It is a program that is created for each
customer individually. We have clients that dont want a chemical on
their lawn ever. We can provide that.
But Beres explains that not all customers mind using chemicals, and
Be Green doesnt mind using them if those chemicals are safe for the
environment. The company uses minimally toxic compounds that dont
affect honey bees, butterflies or earthworms. These products work just as
well as the hazardous chemicals sprayed by other landscapers, Beres says.
Be Green also serves customers whose main wish is to banish all
weeds from their yards, no matter the nature of the chemicals a lawn
care company might use to do so.

We love those customers too, Beres says. If our service can

prove to them that they can have that lawn in an earth-friendly way,
using a fraction of the chemicals they used to use, theyre converted.
They might even give other earth-friendly things a chance.

Sharing a bounty of knowledge

Beres believes most people really do care about making environmentally

conscious decisions in terms of their lawn care, but they dont always
have the information they need to make the best decisions for themselves or the earth. She considers Be Greens most important service to
be educating people and advocating for sustainable practices.
People dont realize there are better alternatives, Beres says. I
want people to know there are earth-friendly methods available and
they really dont cost more money.
She accomplishes this through writing articles and blog entries, and
simply speaking to people about natural solutions for lawn care needs.
Even if people dont employ Be Greens services, if they take that
knowledge and make wiser decisions, Beres considers that a success.
Growing things is great for the earth; its how we do it thats
important, Beres says. Were always going to want a better lawn.
So lets do it in a way thats best for the bunny rabbits, the earthworms
and the other creatures we share this earth with.

Take the next step toward

bettering your lawn and the earth.

Investigate the chemical constituents of essential oils and explain

that high levels of beta caryophyllene in copaiba can have a potent
anti-inflammatory impact and you will have quite a few takers.
Tell a group that frankincense oil can aid with spiritual passing,
and the room gets quiet.
Yet, despite skepticism, practitioners who provide energy
medicine diagnostics and treatments are enjoying success while
working with our pets in many different alternative modalities.
Loving cat mommies are telling their neighbors how their ill
feline improved with kitty raindrop. This essential oil treatment
is very intense and should only be performed with the guidance
of a knowledgeable holistic veterinarian experienced with the
usage of safe, genuine essential oils. Desperate canine parents are
astounded at the results achieved for their stiff, old arthritic buddy
with modalities such as essential oils massage with copaiba,
wintergreen and one drop of peppermint.

Avoid harmful medications

Combine oils with acupuncture treatments and alternate this with

laser light therapy to avoid harmful nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs. Pet patients intuitively know that these gentle alternative treatments are good for them. They relax, yawn, stretch and
respond in a way that makes pet guardians tear up and remark,
I know this is making him feel better and I have never seen him
behave this way in a vets office before!

How can energy medicine effect change

in emotions, behavior and even physical
health?

Frequency is a measurable rate of electrical energy. Every living

thing has an electrical frequency. Certain frequencies can destroy
cancer cells and viruses. Substances with a higher frequency can
destroy diseases with a lower frequency.
A Swedish radiologist was able to dissolve a cancerous mass by
placing an electrode inside the tumor. I have had a similar experience by injecting Boswellia sacra essential oil inside a cancerous
mass. The frequency of this species of frankincense oil (B. sacra)
is so high, it too can dissolve cancer. The tumor melted and an
analysis of the fluid which drained out of the abscessed tissue
showed oil, engulfed by macrophage cells involved in the bodys
clean-up process.

JOIN THE REVOLUTION

Lasers

Laser light therapy is a transference of energy which increases

circulation, stimulates white blood cells and thereby promotes
healing. Professional athletes seek out this modern technology
and now it is commonly used across this country by holistic veterinarians to help pets. The warmth of laser light therapy provides
immediate comfort to a pet who is suffering from chronic arthritis.
A schedule IV laser treatment can speed post-surgical recovery.

Homeopathy

Homeopathy is one of the oldest forms of energy medicine. The

entire premise is based on the belief that all substances possess an
energy which can be potentized (concentrated and released) from
the remedy substance, transferred onto a sugar pill or released into
healthy water, and then administered to a patient. Many dogs and cats
have been treated safely and effectively with homeopathic remedies.

Spiritual energy

Modalities such as reiki and prayer are used every day by pet lovers
and enthusiasts who care deeply for their own and others pets.
People with strong, spiritual feelings can transfer their energy to a pet
in need. Have you ever felt the energy of someone standing close to
you, even though they were not physically touching you? Many of us
tend to ignore these sensations. When we attempt to get in touch
with our energetic feelings, we open a whole new door to possible
diagnostic and healing modalities for our dogs and cats.
An appointment with a reputable animal communicator, who
has harnessed his or her ability to converse telepathically with
your pet, is an entertaining and emotionally stimulating way for
you to get your feet wet in this energetic realm of natural pet care.
You will be very surprised as to what you can learn about yourself
and your pet!

Fun ways
to be a fit
family

besity is a global epidemic affecting

people of all ages. According to The
Centers for Disease Control and
Prevention, more than one-third of Americans are considered obese. Being overweight
or obese has been linked to cardiovascular
disease, diabetes and some forms of cancer,
and children who are overweight are likely
to be overweight or obese adults.
While eating a diet that is low in fat and
high in whole-grain fiber, vegetables and
lean proteins is important, exercise remains
one of the key factors in maintaining a
healthy weight. However, many adults and
children simply do not get enough exercise
during the day. An active lifestyle is often
hampered by the prevalence of digital
devices or sedentary jobs that encourage
more screen time than fitness time. But
there are ways for the entire family to get
fit. Exercising together is not just a great
way for families to get healthy, but also a
great opportunity to spend time together.
The following are a handful of ways families can work together to incorporate more
exercise into their daily lives.
TACKLE CHORES. Yes, tasks around

the house can count as exercise. Working

together not only gets you moving but also
cuts down on the time it takes to tackle
tasks around the house. Mowing the lawn,
vacuuming the rugs, sweeping the floor
all of these activities can get the heart
30

Natures Pathways | August 2014

pumping. Make
it fun by setting
chores to music or
competing against
one another to see
who gets their
task done first or
the best.
COMPETE IN THE POOL. Swimming

is a low-impact activity that works many

muscles in the body. Taking a dip in the
pool can be both relaxing and beneficial to
your health. Compete with family members
to make the most of the time spent in the
water. Host relay swimming races, see how
long each member of the family can tread
water or create any other competitions that
keep everyone in the pool moving.
CREATE AN OUTDOOR OBSTACLE
COURSE. Set up a series of obstacles in

your yard and host your own triathlon.

You can jump through tires, climb through
tubes and scale trees. Make it fun by
having adults try to ride tricycles or pair
up an adult with a child for sack races. The
opportunities for fun are only hampered
by your imagination.
GO FOR FAMILY BICYCLE RIDES.

Traverse your neighborhood or blaze

new trails by riding bikes together. Young
children can be strapped into trailers that

are pulled behind the bike or ride in seats

attached to the bike itself. This gives everyone a chance to enjoy the great outdoors
and hone their cycling skills.
GO HIKING. Hiking is another fun family

activity that also happens to make for great

exercise. Choose a trail that may not be level
and push everyones endurance to the test.

STROLL THE BEACH. Walking or

running on sand offers more resistance

than walking on pavement. Take a stroll at
the seaside. Break up the walk by collecting
shells or stopping by the water to observe
marine wildlife.
HIT THE DANCE FLOOR. If youve been

invited to a wedding or a Sweet 16 party,

cut a rug and take advantage of the DJ and
dance floor. When enjoying yourselves,
you probably wont even realize how much
youre exercising.

Headaches

By Tracy Bretl, D.O.

eadaches are one of the top 10 reasons for

visiting a physician. The causes of headaches are many and varied, and include
muscle tension, migraine, trauma, hypertension, premenstrual
syndrome, tumors and meningitis. The vast majority of headaches
are due to muscle tension or migraine, or a combination of the
two. Although standard textbooks of medicine agree on a musculoskeletal cause for headaches, this factor is rarely considered in
their diagnosis and treatment.
The brain itself is almost insensitive to pain. There are many
pain-sensitive structures outside the cranium, including the scalp,
arteries, muscles, mucous membranes of the sinuses, external and
middle ear, and the teeth. The musculoskeletal cause of tension
headaches is straightforward. The contracting muscles or associated nerves release a number of chemicals that lower the pain
threshold. The crucial area is the base of the head and the upper
neck area. Nerves in this area mediate the referral of excessive
connective tension in the neck as pain in the head.
Intracranially, only the membranes covering the brain and the
blood vessels are sensitive to pain. The pain of migraines can be
due to stretching of the membranes covering the brain and tension
on the venous sinuses (channels in the dura where blood drains
from the head). Prolonged tension can cause a reflex spasm in/
constriction of the blood vessels, which can decrease blood flow.
The bodys response to this is excessive stretching of the arteries in
the head which causes the pain of the migraine. Various chemicals
in the brain are thought to cause this contraction and dilatation.
In both migraine and tension headaches, excessive tension in the
connective tissues structures is a primary cause of pain.
Tension headaches are usually on both sides of the head and
can be preceded by emotional stress and can worsen as the day
progresses. The pain can be a constant tight pressure encircling the
head like a hat band and is often unchanged with rest. Migraines
are often preceded by an aura and are usually on one side of the
www.naturespathways.com

head. Migraine headaches can be started by flashing lights, foods

with a high level of tyramine (such as cheese), certain medications, and alcohol, especially red wine. Sleeping or lying down in
a dark room can offer some relief. Migraines tend to be familial.
The osteopathic physician is able to palpate the bones, muscle
and connective tissue to determine the areas of tension. There are
22 bones in the head and they have a small amount of motion.
By knowing how the bones are supposed to move and how they
are currently moving, the osteopathic physician is able to determine if restriction in the tissues is present, where the restriction
is located, and is then able to gauge improvement in the tissues/
tissue motion.
Evaluation of the neck includes looking at restriction in motion
along with restriction/tenderness in the muscles and connective
tissue. The sacrum must be evaluated as well. The membranes that
cover the brain and spinal cord are attached to the bones in the
head, neck and sacrum. Thus, restrictions in the head and neck
can affect the motion of the sacrum between the hip bones and
vice versa.
Osteopathic manipulation can be added to conventional treatments of headache. While structure may not be the only cause,
correction of structural restrictions can significantly aid in the
reduction and recurrence of pain.
Tracy Bretl, D.O., graduated from Des Moines Universitys College
of Osteopathic Medicine and Surgery in 1989. She then spent
three years in the United States Navy. Dr. Bretl is board certified
in neuromusculoskeletal medicine and osteopathic manipulative
medicine (NMM/OMM). She has been in private practice specializing in NMM/OMM since 1992. For more information, visit http://tracybretldo.

3 simple steps

here and now. Once these moments are past,

they are gone forever.
We need to live more in the moment.
Living in the moment also called mindfulness is a state of active, open, intentional attention on the present.
I like this definition of mindfulness:
Mindfulness is simply being aware
of what is happening right now without
wishing it were different; enjoying the pleasant without holding on to it when it changes
(which it will); being with the unpleasant
without fearing it will always be that way

ife unfolds in the present. But most of

us dont notice it. We let the present
slip away as we worry about the future
and ruminate about the past. When were at
work, we dream about being on vacation; on
vacation, we worry about the work piling up
on our desks. We dwell on intrusive thoughts
of the past or fret about what may or may not
happen in the future. We dont appreciate the

(which it wont). James Baraz, mindfulness meditation teacher.

Research shows that people who are
mindful are happier, more positive, more
empathetic and more secure. They have
higher self-esteem and are more accepting of their own weaknesses and mistakes.
Anchoring awareness in the here and now
reduces the kind of reactivity that can
contribute to feelings of depression, stress
and anxiety.
Learning to be mindful involves a
paradox. You must not be focused on
achieving the benefits because that idea
keeps you focused on the future, rather
than the present. This way of approaching
mindfulness defeats the purpose! There are
a variety of techniques to help you move
toward living more mindfully. The paradox
for all is that letting go of expectation is the
only way to get there! Here are a few techniques to get you started on your journey.

I recently took a trip to Key West during

one of our worst winters ever! Talk about
gratitude! One of my pet peeves was to hear
many conversations such as I wont want
to go home, I wish I could stay longer, or
I am only here for one week. Instead of
savoring the beautiful surroundings, warm
weather and sun, these folks were wasting
their present by worrying about the future.
Instead, relish or luxuriate in whatever
youre doing at the present moment.

2. To improve your
performance, stop thinking
about it

Ive struggled to learn the sport of dog agility.

I never felt comfortable executing the movements and cues you need to perform. My
movements felt awkward. I used to feel like
people were judging me. I never knew what
to do with my arms or my feet! I wanted to
let go, but couldnt, because I knew I looked
ridiculous and so uncoordinated!
Dont worry, no ones watching you,
people always say. Everyones too busy
worrying about themselves. Telling myself
that did not help me move better, as I was
still focused on the mechanics.
I finally had an epiphany a couple of
months ago. I needed to stop overthinking
and just do it. I needed to turn to presentmoment awareness: be here, right now, just
me and my dog. I needed to let go and be
myself in the moment. My agility instructor laughs at me when I say I have stopped
thinking, but its true.

3. Know that you dont know

everything

Resist autopilot! Youve probably had the

experience of pulling into the parking lot
at work and realizing you have no idea
how you got there! You have been driving
the same route over and over and you
have become lost in your thoughts. This
process happens in all areas of our lives.
We become mindless because once we
think we know something, we stop paying
attention to it. As a result, life passes us by
without registering.
The best way to avoid such mindlessness
is to develop the habit of always noticing
new things in whatever situation youre in.
This process of beginners mind creates
engagement with the present moment.
So give these ideas a try. You can become
mindful right now just by paying attention to your immediate experience. Notice
what is happening right now!

Re-think
prosperity

By Dan Conlon

The only limitation is that which one sets up in ones own mind.

Napoleon Hill, Think and Grow Rich

are becoming is one who will easily attract greater prosperity and
abundance.

Step 1: Self-assessment navigating the

internal terrain

n his classic, Think and Grow Rich, Napoleon Hill offers a

powerful formula for prosperity and success. An important
part of his blueprint is the idea that thoughts are things. They
have the power to shape and influence the environment within us
and around us. All actions or inactions are preceded by thought.
As he suggests, the way we arrange and prioritize our beliefs,
values and thoughts influences our experience of prosperity. We
can achieve greater success, and it starts with sorting out what is
in our own mind.
We all describe prosperity and abundance in our own way. We
may define it as financial security, time freedom or health as the
first wealth. However we define it, we all want more of it. First
of all, let me assure you that it is easier than you think, yet it may
require some serious thought. If you think you can, you can; if you
think you cant, you cant.
One of my favorite sayings is, If I want my life to get better, I
need to get better. If I want my circumstances to change, I must
change. All this starts with your own thoughts. The person you

We all have thousands of beliefs or rules that automatically trigger

thoughts, emotions and actions/reactions, which influence the results
we get in life. These results often reinforce our original beliefs. Most
of our thoughts are habitual patterns: familiar and automatic. This
isnt always useful; sometimes, changing our mind is required.
As we shed light on our thoughts, it is common to find real internal conflicts between them and success/wealth. One way to really
discover this in ourselves is to pay close attention to the predominate thoughts and feelings we have throughout the day. By bringing
them into the light of awareness, we can decide if they still serve our
purpose and goals. If not, replace them with more empowering or
stronger beliefs that support our intention to create more prosperity.
When we set out to develop more abundance, both financial
and time freedom, we make decisions/commitments based on
where we are now and move toward the destination we have in our
mind. We set a course and go. For example: If we are in New York
City and our destination is Los Angeles, we know that to make
progress, we must stay the course west. We must make corrections
when we find ourselves off track. If arriving in LA is a metaphor
for achieving the prosperity we seek, our daily choices become
easier. Each choice we make moves us closer to our destination.

Step 2: Course corrections

Perfection is not the goal. A well-thought-out plan still meets obstacles as we pursue it. The intention of self-reflection is to recognize
the inner conflict that arises, often from competing priorities and
responsibilities. This is where real change begins.
Know that there is often an elegant and mature decision waiting
to be discovered. Make the choice that supports your long-term
goals. Sometimes, the answer to the conflict or distraction is
saying no or not now. Sometimes, saying no is uncomfortable.
www.naturespathways.com

Know that a few moments of discomfort are better than days (or a
lifetime) of regretting the wrong decision.

Step 3: Action navigating the marketplace

terrain

The next step is to take action to generate additional income. Stay

open to new possibilities. If you want to accelerate the pace of
growth toward prosperity and abundance, consider starting a
part-time home-based business. Why?
1. Understand that profits are better than wages.
2. Discover your power and test your potential in the
marketplace.
3. Make mistakes and learn home-based businesses are forgiving.
4. Enjoy economic prosperity and time freedom.
If you are looking for prosperity, Hills Think and Grow Rich has
influenced millions around the world. Use the principles outlined in
this book. The formula works.

problems. Less commonly, dandelion was used to treat digestive

problems and skin conditions. Today, traditional or folk uses of
dandelion include use as a liver or kidney tonic, as a diuretic and
for minor digestive problems.
The leaves and roots of the dandelion, or the whole plant, are
used fresh or dried in teas, capsules or extracts. Dandelion leaves
are used in salads or as a cooked green, and the flowers are used
to make wine.

What the science says

There is no compelling scientific evidence for using dandelion as

a treatment for any medical condition.

Side effects and cautions

Dandelion use is generally considered safe. However, there have

been rare reports of upset stomach and diarrhea, and some people
are allergic to the plant.
People with an inflamed or infected gallbladder, or blocked bile
ducts, should avoid using dandelion.

The best exercise in the world

How it opens doors to a balanced body

By Kim Hall

emember as a kid loving to jump on your bed? It felt so

good and often was done in secret before Mom and Dad
caught you. It felt good because it is good. Little did many
of us know at that time that we were practicing Einsteins G-force
(gravity force).
Whats so great about jumping is that it flushes our lymphatic
system, which purifies our body. Whats even better, is when
its done on a trampoline or rebounder (small trampoline), it
strengthens every cell in our body, is gentle on our joints and can
reduce shock by over 90 percent. It is so smart that the astronauts
used them to be ready for space travel.
So if someone ever asks you if you can exercise your kidneys,
liver, veins, eyes, ears, bladder, fat cells, bones and more, the
answer is yes to all of it! Jumping increases balance in elders and
reduces ear infections in children. It even supported me in losing
over 35 pounds after having three kids.
I am a true believer that when its fun, it gets done. The healthy
benefits of jumping on a rebounder/trampoline are especially
phenomenal for kids with autism. It even increases white blood
cell count, improving our immune system.
Its also remarkable to note that when one is jumping, the brain
has the ability to receive and retain information at a greater rate.
Inside the classroom, in an office setting or simply in the living
room, this is a brilliant source for success. Instead of putting my
kids in timeouts when they were younger, they would do 99 jumps
in front of a mirror saying, I will respect my sister or I will use
kinder words. It magically put them in a better frame of mind,
and bouncing got them behavin.
A simple 7 minutes per day (3.5 minutes in the morning and 3.5
in the afternoon) balances our seven chakras and gets the blood
moving. Lymph is considered one of the seven body tissues and
is the first to become compromised under stress (the other six
are blood, fat, bone, nervous tissue and reproductive tissue). My
teacher Linda Brooks taught seven bounces that all can do: health,
strength, aerobic, sitting, sprint, buddy and abdominal.
The jumps help to clean up our body, sending the toxins
through our waste. This further supports our ability to create a
regular restroom rhythm, which creates clarity in mind and
www.naturespathways.com

digestion. Healthy release of liquids five to six times per day and
solids two to three times per day is ideal.
What I love even more is that that my 92-year-old grandma can
also enjoy the benefits of the rebounder while sitting in her chair
and at one time even used the bar to balance. She has lymphedema,
and the jumping is a source to support moving the water in her legs
up and out of her body. Its called buddy bouncing and its simply
one of the ways multiple people can benefit from this exercise.
Our household has experienced many rebounders, from the
$50 one from the sporting goods store, to gym grade, to bungie
cord bouncers that are hundreds of dollars. I love the gym grade
and bungie cord bouncers, and my goal with every purchase is to
invest in those made in the USA. Having strong springs, a durable
Permatron mat and spring-loaded legs for easy folding improve
the ability to maximize our time using the unit.
What I love about incorporating jumping into my day is it is
simple to get up and bounce all day, every day, while I am on the
phone or simply reading a book. Even the dogs love to rest upon it
as I bounce. It makes sense that many trampoline parks continue
to show up; kids get it! The ability to jump, play and learn all day
inside the classroom or in your home is a true gift.
Enjoy learning more from other leaders in rebounding:
The Functional Movement Center: www.tfmc-ipts.com
Needak Rebounders: www.needakrebounders.com
Norman Shealy: www.nadiyaday.com/rebounding-benefits
All the best in bouncing success. Thank you for reading!
The joy our family has discovered in jumping has transformed
into an active learning elementary school program for kids called
Drum-A-Dance. See video at www.drumadance.com. It transforms the classroom from a sit-and-learn environment to a move
and learn success. There is brilliance when we bounce, and kids
brains light up like sparklers.

We men have received mixed messages

from our youth into adulthood on
how to deal with and express grief.
Bear the burden of the loss
Become withdrawn, quiet and want a

lot of alone time

May deal with loss through distraction

or even forget things too painful to

remember
Feel as deeply as women, but may
feel wrong or be afraid to show their
vulnerability
May try to keep busy and avoid talking
about loss
Grieve their own way, influenced by
who they are, how they are made, what
theyve experienced and how they have
been raised
Are likely to seek a map to understand
grief s terrain
If you have experienced a loss and subsequent grief, you probably can relate to
some or all of these. We men do grieve
differently than women. Grief can last for
some time but it can also be healed. There
are techniques available to heal grief. You
also have a choice with grief. You can live
in grief for the rest of your life, if you wish,

or you can move through it and heal. In

my experience with grief and in coaching
others, the amount of time you spend in
healing the grief is minuscule compared
with the daily pain you carry.
If you choose to linger in grief, ask
yourself:
How is this serving me?
What do I get from this?
Am I addicted to grief s pain?
There are other questions that may crop up,
but I want you to consider those questions
if you have been in grief for some time. If
your answers are uncomfortable, you might
consider seeking professional help.
There are also things from our past that
affect how we grieve and express our grief,
some that are confusing and contradictory.

Mixed messages

We men have received mixed messages

from our youth into adulthood on how
to deal with and express grief. I grew up
in a world where men did not openly
express their feelings of sadness and
www.naturespathways.com

sorrow as this showed vulnerability or

weakness. The norm for grieving was
a reserved, subdued and calm exterior even though you felt otherwise. To
openly weep at a funeral was rare. After
the funeral, most men internalized their
grief by suppressing their feelings or
used a physical expression like work or a
hobby to express grief. Perhaps we used
some other ways mentioned in the previous section, too. Personally, I stuffed
my grief away when I was younger until
my late wife died. Then I cried a river.
It wasnt in public, but I did privately. It
helped me get through the funeral.
I was raised with the perception that
big boys dont cry and only sissies cry.
The idea to suck it up and move on was
common. As a kid, I hurt my knee once so
bad that I rolled around in intense pain,
but never let out a whimper. I certainly
didnt want to show vulnerability or weakness by crying. How many of you never
cried, no matter how bad the pain?
Now that we are older, lets put those
messages aside and allow ourselves to cry
when grieving. If you dont feel safe crying
in public, then do it privately. Suppressing
the grief only leads to more problems later
where certain things, events or comments
can cause us to have outbursts at inappropriate times. I had those untimely
outbursts and I wasnt proud of them. I
have since learned to manage those grief
feelings and express them when I want in
a safe place.
Managing your feelings and emotions is
a key grief tool. When you can do that, you
will have taken a step toward freeing yourself from the negative feelings/emotions of
your loss. Realize that there is a time and
place for you to express your grief and feelings, and to do it safely.
More on grief and feelings next month.

Yoga can help

with getting
over
a loss

By Andrea Smessaert

his article may come as a surprise to many, and might

offend a few, but it comes from the bottom of my heart.
Yoga has opened many doors for me, and has also created
doors I had no idea existed. To go down the path of self-discovery
has been a daunting task. It has offended many people who are just
too scared to take a look at the deep and sometimes unpleasantness of life. I have lost some meaningful people in my life because
of this self-discovery. But Ive also gained many friends who are
nurturing souls. I have reconnected with people who drifted away,
and realized some toxic relationships needed to be let go ones
that I will always miss. As I write this, I am listening to Madonnas song, Ill Remember and tears are rolling down my face.
For those of you who know me, you are probably scratching your
head. Yep, Madonna.
Yoga is not all about asanas/poses. The physical practice is
great, dont get me wrong; I love a great vinyasa class. But meditation kicks your butt. Physical pain is fleeting; emotional pain is
harder to deal with. Once we come to terms with the inner workings of our own mind, clarity or maybe muddy clarity takes
shape. Wikipedia states Meditation is a practice in which an individual trains the mind or induces a mode of consciousness, either
to realize some benefit or as an end in itself. You do not have to
sit like a monk to meditate. Meditation can happen on a good
bike ride, shoveling the snow, driving your car or out on a good
hike anything that will help you clear your mind of the days
crap that needs to be done. It is my experience to meditate in fleeting moments that come together to form a sense of clarity. And
sometimes this clarity is very unpleasant. But once we deal with
the unpleasantness and come to terms with that, we can move on
to clarity.
Again from Wikipedia, Meditation may involve generating an
emotional state for the purpose of analyzing that state such as
www.naturespathways.com

anger, hatred, etc. or cultivating a particular mental response

to various phenomena, such as compassion. The term meditation
can refer to the state itself, as well as to practices or techniques
employed to cultivate the state. Meditation may also involve
repeating a mantra and closing the eyes. The mantra is chosen
based on its suitability to the individual meditator. Meditation has
a calming effect and directs awareness inward until pure awareness
is achieved, described as being awake inside without being aware
of anything except awareness itself. In brief, there are dozens of
specific styles of meditation practice, and many different types of
activity commonly referred to as meditative practices.
A very good friend of mine, someone who has had a huge impact
on my life, sent me a BBC documentary of the life of Buddha. It
is a documentary on The Buddha, Siddhartha (He Who Achieves
His Aim) Gautama. It is on YouTube for those of you who want to
watch it. Whenever I listen to it, it brings me back to the place I first
listened to it. I can see the waves at my favorite beach, I can smell
the ocean and see what I was looking at the first time I listened to
this documentary. From Wikipedia: Buddhist meditation refers to
the meditative practices associated with the religion and philosophy of Buddhism. Core meditation techniques have been preserved
in ancient Buddhist texts and have proliferated and diversified
through teacher-student transmissions. Buddhists pursue meditation as part of the path toward enlightenment and nirvana.
So on this very deep and scary topic, meditate and deal with
your demons. It might not be pleasant, but a root canal is not
pleasant either.

Reaching
Treetops Yoga
brings sunshine
and strength
into
Janes life

he person I have become through yoga can be best described

as motivated, inspired, energetic, beautiful, passionate,
patient, happy and so many more things. I have Reaching
Treetops Yoga to thank for a large portion of those changes.
I first met Alyssa Hallen Konda, owner of Reaching Treetops
Yoga, at a fundraiser for my son. My son was born with a rare
spontaneous genetic disorder called Costello syndrome; he was
not only born with cancer, but multiple other conditions: he had
a heart defect and developmental delay, just to name a few things.
He had a hard time breathing his whole first year and required
two major surgeries just to get off oxygen. Our family pretty much
took up residence in the area childrens hospital.
During this time, my life was crazy and exhausting. I was stuck
in a dark cloud. I felt I had the worst luck in the world, having
delivered stillborn twins only one year before having my special
needs child. Plus, with three additional, school-aged children, all
one year apart in age, I existed on auto pilot; I was in survival
mode for my family. I wasnt the only one: Two of my children
were seeing a psychiatrist to help them through those tough times.
Then I met Alyssa.
We were raising funds to get our son to a medical conference
in Florida and she was a vendor at the fair we put together for
our son. She stopped me and not only gave me free stuff (from
Norwex), but she told me about her son, who was also born medically fragile. I felt a connection with her, mom to mom.
When I met Alyssa, I was attending a $10-a-month gym and
doing the same routine over and over and over again: elliptical,
weights, yoga class, repeat. Except the yoga classes at this gym
were nothing like what I was about to experience after adding
Reaching Treetops Yoga Studio to my fitness regimen.
42

Natures Pathways | August 2014

Alyssa told me about her yoga studio and I kept telling her,
Oh, I already go to yoga classes at the gym I go to. I really didnt
understand how different life would be if I just checked out her
studio. I experienced a blessing in disguise when my gym cut the
yoga class I was attending and I decided to try out Reaching Treetops aerial yoga class.
It wasnt a walk in the park at first. In fact, I was horrible at my
first class. At first, I was terrified of falling on my head or letting go
of the silks, and I didnt trust that the fabric would hold me. Plus,
it was hard work! But oh man was it fun!
The first thing I noticed at Reaching Treetops was how comfortable they make you feel. They were so nice! I was nervous to try
something new, but when I was there, nothing else in the world
mattered. Taking five minutes at the end of class for savasana
a pose where you do nothing but lay still, focusing on relaxing
everything in your body, freeing your mind of anything negative
and breathing in everything positive did wonders for my spiritual and mental health.
I started going to Reaching Treetops Yoga every week. It took
about three classes before the hurt of using muscles that hadnt
been exercised before became unnoticeable. My body didnt ache
like it would from a regular gym; instead, I felt stretched in every
muscle, stronger in every muscle and more flexible. My back hurt
www.naturespathways.com

less, my posture got better I learned how to walk tall and proud.
To put it simply, I felt great!
I was addicted. Within my first month I could feel muscle tone
in my arms and my abs. I had little muscles popping out everywhere and would get really excited every time I noticed them. I
had been lifting weights in a repetitive routine process at the $10
gym five days a week and not getting results nearly as fast as by
doing aerial yoga.
One year later, I feel I am inspiring other new people in the room.
I am doing the things that I was jealous I couldnt do when I began.
I would watch other students in class and think, I wish I could
do that! I want to be just like them! and now I think I am there. I
can do mostly what everyone else can do, but I am forever learning
more, which is what makes it fun. There is always room to grow!
I started expanding outside of aerial and attending as many
classes as I could in a week. I tried pose breakdown, hatha yoga,
vinyasa yoga, mommy and baby yoga, kids aerial yoga, kids yoga,
yoga in the park, core fusion and roll with flow. I felt my instructors becoming my friends, I could feel their light and love when
I accomplished something. They were as happy for me as if they
had done it themselves. Fitness was no longer tasking, it was easy
and it was something I wanted to do every single day.
I wasnt just learning yoga at Reaching Treetops, though; I was
also learning things about myself. I was doing things I didnt know
I could do. Instructors were taking their time to teach me how to be
the person I wanted to become. They pushed my limits just enough
to help me succeed in what I wanted to do. That feeling you get when
you accomplish something that seems impossible is invigorating.
I am proud of myself for going out and doing something I never
thought I would do and getting really good at it all while taking
care of four kids, one with special needs.
I knew I wasnt the only one who would benefit from the lessons
Reaching Treetops taught me. I took my kids to yoga and I taught
them yoga at home. My house became a place of peace, energy
and excitement. We bike, we do yoga, we run for charity and we
spend more time together.
I think the most important thing about yoga is finding a place
where you feel comfortable and at home. It only works if you love
where you are. My $10 gym did not do for me what Reaching
Treetops has done for me and my family.
Currently I am hoping to become a yoga instructor myself. I
want to inspire others the way Reaching Treetops has inspired me.
I want everyone to feel the joy I feel in my mind, body and soul.
Let the light in me honor and inspire the light in you. Namaste!
