THE HAWAIIAN ISLANDS

1 If you would like to go to a beautiful ,faraway place ,you should go to the Hawaiian
Islands.Located in the middle of the Pacific Ocean, these islands are far from any other land.
They are,in fact, the farthest from land of any islands on earth-about 2,400 miles from San
Francisco, 3,830 miles from Tokyo, and 5,540 miles from Hong Kong.
2 There are eight Hawaiian Islands. In order of size, they are Hawaii (the “Big
Island”),Maui,Oahu,Kauai,Molokai,Lanai,Niihau,and Kahoolawe.In 1959,the islands together
became Hawaii, the 50th state of the United States.
3 While they differ from one another in some ways, the islands share many of the same
features. They all have a tropical climate, before anything else. The average daytime
temperature is about 78 degrees Fahrenheit in the winter and 85 degrees Fahrenheit in the
summer. However,it is never uncomfortably hot.The nighttime temperature is always cooler
and there is generally a little wind. Rain falls often, but usually not for long.People in Hawaii
say that it rains every day somewhere on the islands.
4 The islands also are alike in their natural beauty. On each of them it is not surprising to
encounter volcanic mountains and waterfalls, rain forests and beautiful beaches, together with
spectacular views, and a lot of nature attractions The warm ,clear water around the islands is
filled with many species of sea creatures, including endangered ones. There are giant sea
turtles, whales, and dolphins as well as a varied group of tropical fish. The forests are the
natural research center for those whose career or hobby is aviculture, ornithology, or botany
with splendid and rare flower or bird species.
5 The Hawaiian Islands, in fact, have an interesting natural history, unparalleled to
anywhere else in the world. Until modern times, they were nothing but niches for birds and
insects, with just few exceptions. The exceptions were the monk seal (a sea mammal) and a
kind of bat (a flying mammal) .There were no other mammals until people arrived in about
500 A.D. They brought some animals, such as pigs, for food. Other animals, such as mice,
probably traveled to the islands hidden in their boats.
6 Each of the islands is different from each other, considering their own peculiarities. For
instance, the Big Island, Hawaii, is the only island where there are active volcanoes. Both
Mauna Loa and Kilauea on Hawaii occasionally erupt, pouring out hot lava and smoke. The
island of Oahu is the site of the modern capital of Hawaii, Honolulu. This island also has one
of the world’s most famous beaches, Waikiki Beach , especially popular with surfers.
7 And finally, the island of Maui is important to Hawaiians for its role in the history of the
islands .In 1800,Kamehameha the great became the king of islands. He established his capital
on Maui, where it remained until early in the 20th century. Maui, named after the demigod that
drew the Hawaiian Islands up from the ocean, is the Valley Isle. Legend says that Maui
captured the Sun and secured the promise of long days for the enjoyment of the people
and visitors of these islands. Today it is said the Sun resides in the beautiful mountains of
Haleakala known as the "House of the Sun". Maui is the second largest island in the
Hawaiian chain providing miles and miles of diverse cultures.
8 12A Today, Hawaii is not only a major tourist attraction but also, without a doubt, a
great place for aquaculture. 12B The Hawaiians themselves have an extensive system of
pond culture dating back more than 700 years and finfish culture is considered an integral part
of their island heritage.12C In 1979, Hawaii was the first U.S. state to implement an
aquaculture development plan to provide research funding and critical support services to the
industry.12D Now Hawaii is overwhelmingly contributing to global aquaculture efforts by

1
providing cutting-edge research, technical training, degree education, and consulting
expertise for key species and production systems. Considering all the aspects of the Hawaiian
Islands, every one will visit there.
