Pastoral Letter
You will remember the days when supermarkets were extremely good
at placing very attractive items next to the check-out? Its just to
entice the children we would say, though in reality the biggest battle
was probably for the will of the adult. In any case there remains
plenty to entice adults as well a cheaper loan, a better deal on your
car, home insurance or an immediate payment for switching your
bank account. The fact is that the whole of society is good at placing
attractive possibilities in front of us, by phone, by e-mail, through the
letter box, tumbling out of the Radio Times!...instant rewards, quick
results... All you have to do is...
Now dont imagine this is a recent phenomenon seven or eight
hundred years BC there was a man called Isaiah who was warning a
whole country about just such a thing! Short-cuts and quick fixes or,
as he expressed it so vividly, why spend money on what is not
bread?. It is our souls, he said, the deepest level of our spiritual
being, that need to be fed.
A few weeks ago Carol and I were teaching the Gospel story of The
Feeding of the Five Thousand at Messy Church. That is the Bible
story above all others which shows Gods delight in feeding our
spirits. The crowd had deliberately set out to find and listen to the
new teacher, Jesus. His words were becoming known, his deeds
also; and the way he would take on religious leaders was refreshing.
We call it feeding the five thousand, but with what? Not just bread
and fish. The story makes clear that he taught and they listened.
This was spiritual satisfaction. Only later, as evening approached did
tummies rumble. With the result that he fed them physically as well.
You can say it was a miracle and leave it there. You can say that
when the boy produced his packed lunch others were shamed into
admitting they had some hidden sandwiches too. But dig deeper if
you want to know what God is like. He doesnt deliver quick fixes,
short cuts. He uses what we already have. In fact, all that is available
to him is what weve got! Just as the loaves and fishes were in the
crowd, so satisfaction for us is in the daily round and among the
people we live with and work with. Furthermore, in the very
ordinariness of life it is we whom God involves in distributing what our
human spirits need to each other. So here is food for us to think
about. No one-off solution, no quick-fix, no benefactor. God ensures
that what we need is among us; we are the ones who share it around;
and there will always be more than we need.
Sammie

News from the Beats - August '14.
Sherfield Park
Very little has occurred in the area over the last month
(June-July) but as always stay vigilant.
We have had two cannabis factories in the area and the
chances are we will have one again. We would always encourage you to
report any suspicions for us to investigate.
Cannabis factories can be found in any type of premises. Watch out for:
Lights being left on day and night.
Electrical wiring tampered with.
Sudden increase in electricity bills.
Curtains constantly drawn or blacked out.
Strong pungent smell.
High humidity in property (condensation on windows).
High heat output from the premises (in winter snow melts very
quickly from roof).
Different people coming and going at strange times.
No one seems to be living there or only visit for a short period.
Occupants not seen or unwilling to socialize.
Venting protruding from roof constant noise of cooling fans.
New occupants bringing in lots of equipment to an address
Large amounts of bin bags containing gardening waste

Sherfield and surrounding villages
Rogue Trading. There was an incident reported to the Police by an
elderly resident in Sherfield. A man claiming to be from a landscaping
business quoted the resident a fee for some garden work, and asked for
payment in advance stating he would return in thirty minutes to carry out
the agreed work. The man never returned to the address, and his
description and details have been passed to Hampshire Trading
standards team. The following points below can help.
(Continued on page 12)

Page 12
Rogue Traders Advice:
Always use the door chain when answering the door,
if you are not sure do not open the door.
Always check the credentials of unknown callers. Do
not phone the number on the ID card, use a phone book or a bill.
Never employ cold-calling doorstep traders or engage with cold
callers on the phone.
Do not keep substantial sums of money in the home.
Always keep front and back doors locked.
LOCK STOP CHAIN and CHECK - if unsure do not open the door.
Consider joining or setting up a No Cold Calling Zone or
Neighbourhood Watch scheme.
Report any suspicious callers or activity to the police immediately
using 101.
Keep an eye on elderly or vulnerable neighbours, friends and family.
Anti-social Behaviour. Following on from my previous report last month,
there has been slight reduction in reported ASB incidents. However, we
have still received calls from residents within Bramley and Sherfield
reporting people behaving in an inconsiderate and rowdy manor. Another
issue that has been reported is the increase in children playing football in
the road. There is a concern for the safety of children even if they are
outside their own house. Please could I ask all residents to ensure that if
they are responsible for any children playing outside of their premises,
then they should ensure they are in a suitable and safe location for them
to do so.
The Police work closely with other partner agencies and take all reports of
ASB seriously. If persons are causing continual incidents of ASB then it is
likely that enforcement action will taken against those offenders.
Farewell. I will be leaving the Beat in the next few weeks, and I would like
to notify you that PCSO Nathaniel Johnson will be taking over from me. It
has been a pleasure to work in the area, and I have really enjoyed my time
on the Beat. I hope to see as many of you as possible to say good bye in
person before I go and I wish you all the best for the future. Jim.
Emergency. As always, please can I ask all residents to report any
suspicious persons, vehicles or incidents using the 101 telephone number;
please only ring 999 if it is a genuine emergency.

Could you help Guide Dogs in the Basingstoke
area?

Jean has been volunteering for us since 2010 and really
enjoys her role. She says Highlights for me are
meeting guide dogs and their owners, seeing the dogs
in action and the difference they make. We may never
know who we have helped, but someone, somewhere
will have their lives transformed.
We are looking for people to be part of a Guide Dogs Basingstoke
Group. Lots of voluntary roles are available from organising events,
helping with collections and to raising awareness of the work we do.
Our roles are very flexible and can be suited to how many hours you
are able to donate. Katie Smith, local Guide Dogs representative,
says Whatever youre interested in doing, whether you have a little or
a lot of time to spare, you will be guaranteed to meet new people and
have some fun! At the same time you will be raising funds to enable
Guide Dogs to create the special partnerships which can change the
lives of people who are blind and partially sighted.
To find out more please contact Katie Smith on
07795 611459 or email katie.smith@guidedogs.org.uk.

slightly different. Were organising a figure of eight walk
starting and finishing at All Saints Church in the centre
of old Stratfield Turgis. Bring your own picnic, Cars can
be left by the church with your picnic while we go off
on a couple of shortish loops, so hopefully something
to suit all ages. Picnics can be enjoyed by

Girl guiding gives girls a space where
they can build up their confidence,
raise their aspirations, make more
friends and have fantastic fun.
Guiding in Chineham continues to
grow. We have a terrific team of 25
leaders and helpers, running seven units. Our Senior Section will
make the eighth when it opens in September.
We run projects, events and activities that give girls the
opportunity to discover their potential and learn new skills.
Activities this year include, pack holidays at Foxlease and
Brownsea Island, a torch relay and party to celebrate 100 years
of Brownies, nature walks, a trip to Downing Street, fire station
visits, First Aid sessions, bag packing fund raising and Dragon
Boating. Still to come this year are a visit to Westminster, a
blue camp, our Wellies and Wristbands Festival camp and a
Mad Hatters tea party.
In order to continue to grow our District and to reduce the waiting
lists, we are looking for help across all age ranges. Rainbows are
5 7 years old, Brownies are 7 to 10, Guides are 10 14 and
Senior Section are 14 to 26.
There are lots of ways you can volunteer for Girl Guiding. Its
flexible and can be arranged to fit round a busy lifestyle. No
matter how much or little time you have, or how long you will be
based in the area, every little counts.
If you would like to help in Chineham , or would like to discuss
any details regarding the Chineham units please contact Sandie
Jackson, District Commissioner (Loddon Chineham) on 01256
473636, 07811 648398 or sandie@the-interweb.co.uk. If you
would like to help in any other location please go to
www.girlguiding.org.uk/get_involved/register_your_interest.aspx
and register your interest in volunteering. Thank you.

Church Extensionlatest!
We are nearly there! The finishing touches to the interior have been
done, but delays have occurred with the windows due to the original
ones failing quality control. The glass connection to the church (seen
right in picture) is complete and as you receive this the Bishop of
Winchester will have dedicated the building on Sunday 27th July.
The next move will be the installation of the kitchen as and when the
monies become available.

UPDATE ON THE NEW PRIEST IN CHARGE
Over the past 8 months since Reverend Bob Pollitt retired, the
process to select a new Priest in Charge has been taking place. This
culminated in final interviews taking place on Tuesday 24
th
of June.
There were 2 candidates but no appointment was made.
Following a review of our Parish Profile new advertisements will be
placed with the appropriate media, in September after the holiday
season has ended, and a further selection and interviews will take
place.
Church cleaning moves on.......
We are looking for new volunteers to help our current
teams. Even if you are only able to help occasionally or
in an emergency you would be welcomed to our group.
As the new extension opens its doors we want to continue our high
standard of care for the whole building.
Please consider whether you are able to help.

A TIME FOR A CHANGE
Very early in the morning, while it was still dark, Jesus got up, left the
house and went off to a solitary place, where he prayed. Simon and
his companions went to look for him, and when they found him, they
exclaimed: "Everyone is looking for you!" Mark 1 : 35-37 The NIV Bible

Prayer for the Month.
Lord Jesus, you recognised the need to step back from the business
and demands which people made on you. As we come to a time of
holidays help to realise that we too, need to use the time wisely as
you did. Help us to take time to reflect on our lives and on our
relationships with those around us. Teach us to make time and space
for you, to take the opportunity presented by a break from our normal
routine to pause and ponder and to reflect on your goodness.
Help us to grow closer to you and to welcome you into the turmoil of
our lives with all its noise and confusion, demands and
responsibilities. Help us to realise our need to share our
lives with you, confident that you are always with us and
that you care for us and want us to turn to you and
acknowledge you as our Lord and Saviour.
In Jesus name we pray. Amen

Prayer Points for August
Pray for the future of our benefice that the advertisement for a new
Priest in Charge will lead to a successful applicant next time.
Pray for safe journeys for all who are travelling over the next two
months. Pray for the children in our villages that they may be safe
throughout the summer.
Pray for all the very many Scripture Union and other Christian camps
for children organised all over the country. May those who attend feel
the touch of your Holy Spirit.
Give thanks for the success of all the village events of the last month.
Pray for the events happening in the next two months that they may
be times of joyous sharing by all who take part.
Pray for those who have recently married and for those who are to be
married in the next two months.
Pray for leaders of all countries that they rule wisely. Pray for success
of the elections in Afghanistan and for peace in the Middle East,

The 2nd annual summer festival was held on Saturday 5
th
July. It was a
fantastic event and the rain certainly didnt
dampen anyone's spirits!

This year we had a Wild West theme and
the many activities on offer included;
bucking bronco, panning for gold, bbq and
hog roast. The Saloon staff were kept
busy serving thirsty customers a selection
of drinks including Sherfest Ale (courtesy
of Sherfield Brewery), Woodley Sider and
Sherfest punch!
The live music was fantastic, a massive
thank you to all the bands who gave up their
time to put on a great show and really add to
the festival atmosphere.
Other entertainment included last years
favourites the Drum Runners and a fun
sports day organised by our very own
Sherfield Park Runners. The children were
also lucky enough to catch Silly Scott and his magic show (a welcome
indoor treat during a very heavy downpour!).
More fun was to be had with face
painting, bouncy castles, children's
play area and wild west themed
crafts!

Page 31
A HUGE thank you goes to all the
volunteers on the day who really
made this happen. Those that
helped set up or clear away or
helped run the bar, it really isnt
possible without people giving up
their time to help out. Thanks also
to everyone who donated raffle
prizes, local residents and
businesses.
Sherfield Park Community Association is a registered charity and
Sherfest is a big fundraising opportunity. All profits go straight back into
the running of the centre and community activities. We need as much
help as possible to organise events and activities to keep the much
needed funds coming in. We hope to attract an organising committee for
Sherfest 2015, so if you would like to be involved please let us know.

Thanks to everyone who came and supported us and see you at
Sherfest 2015!!!
I think this picture really sums up the atmosphere of the day!

THE SUMMER BARN DANCE
What better way to spend your Saturday evening than enjoying a generous
BBQ in good company, before dancing your socks off to the toe-tapping
rhythms of The Diatonics Ceilidh Band at the Annual Summer Barn Dance
and BBQ. Another great evening was had in early July, Live at Sherfield
Village Hall! Do make a note in your diary to buy your tickets early for the
popular Winter Barn Dance on Saturday 31
st
January 2015.

FUNDRAISING
Do you enjoy the functions at the village hall? Or are you new to the village?
Get involved by joining The Friends of Sherfield Village Hall fundraising
group. As a Charity, the only regular income the Hall has is from its hiring
fees so donations and fund raising events are vital to maintain the Hall and
carry out further renovation and refurbishments. If you would like to help out
please contact Alan Ball on 01256 883838.

Councillor Ranil Jayawardena

Its been a little while since I last wrote in the
Loddon Valley Link. It is a privilege to represent
the villages of Bramley and Sherfield, but I also
serve the Borough as a whole as Deputy Leader
of the Council. Following the elections in May,
the Conservatives have retained the leadership,
but no longer have a majority in the chamber with which we can
deliver Conservative policies (such as freezing the Council Tax)
unless opposition Councillors also vote for them.
Our strategy - our long-term plan - remains delivering lower bills,
more jobs and better facilities to you and your family. Because of our
five year Council Tax freeze to date, the cost to you has fallen in real
terms - the Council has continued to drive through greater
efficiencies and seek better value-for-money from contracts to
ensure that inflationary pressures have not been passed on to you.
There is more to do. That's why the Conservatives will continue to
manage the finances for the long-term, ensuring that we continue to
deliver good services at a good price from your local Council.
Turning to the local area, along the A33 in Sherfield there has been
unlawful felling of trees, potentially making way for unlawful
development. This is wrong and your Councillors agree with you that
it must be stopped. Thats why the Borough Council secured an
injunction against development on the site and is monitoring the site
daily. I have also met with Chief Inspector Simon Dodds (the District
Commander of Police) and he is increasing the patrols in the area.
We remain in contact. No-one is above the law and I can assure you
that the authorities are using all the levers open to them to ensure
this is enforced.
That said, the law needs to be tightened. My colleague, Cllr Elaine
Still, asked a question to this point at a meeting of the Council
recently, calling for action to be taken. My fellow Cabinet Member,
Cllr Mark Ruffell, responded that he would work to lobby for a
change in the law. This (clearly) wont happen overnight and it will
be important for the law to be drafted very carefully in order for new
loopholes not to be created. Even so, we will continue to call for
change, because this cant continue and its not a problem peculiar
to North Hampshire.

Buddhism Philosophy - A way of life
The essential message of Buddhism is that anyone anywhere, no
matter how troubled the times, can transform their circumstances,
achieve total victory and attain a state of absolute happiness- in which
life itself is a joy in the place where they are right now.
We were not born into this world to suffer and be miserable. We were
born to be happy and savour true joy, never allowing any suffering or
misfortune to defeat us.

Sherfield and District Gardening Club
The gardening club visited Lower Lovetts Farm at Knowl Hill on
21
st
July. Owned by Richard Sanford, a former chef (with a Michelin
star) and wine merchant. Richard chose a strict vegan lifestyle after
health problems: in April 2008 he was diagnosed with an aggressive
type of prostate cancer and given two years to live. His home grown
fruit and veg are carefully selected to make up a diet that is as
rigorously healthy and nutritionally complete as possible.
Richard has turned half an acre of his Berkshire farm into a productive
plot. The immaculate plants are defended against deer and rabbits by
a tall fence and the garden contains a polytunnel, large fruit cage and
a central flower bed to attract pollinators. Espaliered pears and apples
edge beds that surround tightly packed crops of brassicas, herbs,
salad and garlic, while great pylons of scrambling vines produce
shelling beans for year-round use.
Sadly, by the time you receive your copy of the Link, the garden is no
longer open in 2014. However, Richard has published a vey
comprehensive website with lots of pictures and hints and tips on
growing and cooking vegetables. www.lowerlovettsfarm.com
There is no meeting or garden visit in August. Our next get together is
on 15

September where we will be entertained by Jennifer Harmer
with her stories and pictures of her travels around the world
photographing wild flowers.

BASINGSTOKE CIVIL SERVICE RETIREMENT FELLOWSHIP
At the monthly meeting held in July Tony Brazier, the Secretary,
welcomed 55 members and 1 visitor. After giving apologies from
those unable to attend he went on to announce that Janette Davies
had sadly resigned as Chairman due to ill health but would continue to
run the trips that she had organised and book the speakers for next
year. Tony said he would pass on the Groups best wishes and
thanks for all the hard work she had already done.
Christine Broadbent, the Groups Visiting Officer, gave her report and
Tony then introduced the speaker, Ian Robertson, who had titled his
talk A Transport of Delight after the Flanders and Swann song. He
gave a history of the bus from George Shillibeers first horse drawn
omnibus service in London on 4
th
July 1829 right through to the
modern hybrid coaches and buses of today. Regulations had to be
set for the service as it became increasingly popular with accidents
occurring due to the many operators vying for customers on the very
congested streets. The heyday for bus transport was after the second
-world war in the 1950s and although still popular todays private
operators are more interested in making a profit rather than supplying
a service which means that some routes have to be subsidised by
local councils to ensure that they still run. Ian concluded his talk by
giving a history of public transport in the Basingstoke area.
After thanking Ian for his talk Tony reminded members of the
forthcoming trips to Godalming on Thursday 14
th
August which will
include a cream tea on a horse drawn canal boat, Brighton on
Thursday 11
th
September, the newly opened Bordon Market on
Thursday 2
nd
October and the Wurlitzer Concert & London Lights on
Thursday 27
th
November. The Christmas lunch will be on Thursday
11
th
December at BCOT and the next meeting is on Wednesday 6
th

August when the speaker will be Gordon Massie on Floriade
Reflections.
The group meets on the first Wednesday of each month at Brookvale
Village Hall from 10 am 12 noon and all retired Civil Servants and
their partners are welcome. If you would like to join us on any of our
trips, whether you are a member or not, please ring Kate Lambeth on

A VIEW FROM SHERFIELD PARK-
Community Governance Review
In early 2013 the Sherfield Park Community Association (SPCA) requested
support from Sherfield on Loddon Parish Council for its plans to form an
independent parish council on Sherfield Park. In August 2013 the Parish
Council agreed we should have our own parish council and voted to formally
request BDBC to undertake a Community Governance Review (CGR) to
consider the merits of our case. In June 2014 BDBC formally began the
CGR and distributed a questionnaire to all residents of Sherfield Park,
Sherfield on Loddon and Chineham. The survey requests the residents in
each area to indicate if they support the formation of an independent parish
council on Sherfield Park or wish to stay with Sherfield on Loddon PC or be
absorbed as part of Chineham PC. Please note that the deadline for
completion of the questionnaire is 1
st
August (or the following weekend
(ed)). It is really important that you express your view; this can be can be
done on line at www.basingstoke.gov.uk/go/parishreview
At the July Sherfield PC meeting in response to the CGR questionnaire the
Parish Council unanimously voted to support the case for the formation of
our own independent PC.
On 14
th
July at the Chineham PC meeting the council also debated its
response to the CGR Questionnaire. The council voted not to support the
option (option C) the Sherfield Park community at Taylor`s farm should be
incorporated into Chineham Parish Council. Additionally it proposed that
the Sherfield Park residents of Taylor`s Farm should decide for themselves
how they wish to be represented.
As the CGR options relating to being part of another PC have effectively
been removed by our neighbouring PC`s it now leaves the way clear for
BDBC to move forward with our request for an independent Parish Council.
Following the end of the consultation period the CGR team will review the
data and prepare an initial proposal which will then be put out for comment
and review. This is likely to be sometime in September.
David Leivesley
Invitation to help to prepare Neighbourhood Plan
Members of the Planning Sub-Committee for the Neighbourhood Plan would
like to invite a voting resident of Taylors Farm to join them to help to
prepare the Neighbourhood Plan for the Parish of Sherfield on
Loddon. Anyone interested should apply by 31
st
August 2014 to the
Committee Secretary, Mr Peter Hayes, at sol_planning@yahoo.co.uk

Page 49
At the end of June a group of us and some
members of Bramley NWR enjoyed an evening trip
along the Basingstoke Canal on the John Pinkerton
II. We were blessed with a fine evening, tucked
into fish and chip suppers which had been delivered to us when we got
to the turn round point and returned to Odiham in pouring rain! The
barge trip was instead of our usual June safari supper.
We have held two evening meetings since the last Link went to print:
first of all we had a meeting about names. It was a very interesting and
informative evening with several members researching their birth
names, some researching their married names and Christian names.
We also discussed whether we liked our names (or not!), why we
chose our childrens name(s), the origin of names and their meanings.
Some members uncovered some fascinating statistics about their
names (both married and maiden names) and one member said she
would like to have been named after her great grandmother.
Our July meeting was on the subject of White. Sally K led the meeting
and by introduction gave us the meaning of the word: purity, innocence,
wholeness. And this is how white is perceived in the west. In the east it
is associated with death. We then paired off and took part in a light-
hearted quiz and the winners, Cathy and Terry were presented with a
prize of a bar of white chocolate. Terry gave us a short talk about white
flowers: how often white flowers are used at
weddings and in bridal bouquets, symbolism
associated with the white chrysanthemum and
death, lilies for peace and serenity often used at
funerals and the Star Gazer Lilys association with
sympathy. Terry also mentioned the famous White Garden at
Sissinghurst.
Cathy then gave a short presentation about The White Company, how
it was formed, its founder (Chrissie Rucker), how it had grown since its
formation in 1994. She also mentioned how when she googled The
White Company she discovered it was also the title of a historical
novel by Sir Arthur Conan Doyle. One or two members had brought
along white mementos with fascinating stories attached to them and we
finished off the evening with a large white cake, a gorgeous pavlova
baked by host of the evening, Valerie B.

Our speaker for the July meeting was Nigel Sully from The Shaw Trust
Horticulture. Nigel gave a really interesting talk about the work they do
with disadvantaged and disabled people. They help them learn new
skills, gain independence, make friends and improve their mental and
physical well-being to eventually gain employment and increase job
prospects. They are based at the Elizabeth Road allotments in South
Ham and work alongside experienced horticulture trainers. The
allotments are open to the public during certain days of the week to go
and see the work they do and they also have open days where they sell
produce and also woodwork items made from recycled wood.
Also provided by the Shaw Trust is a professional garden support
service which has been commissioned by Hampshire County Council
for residents over the age of 60. More information on this service
including cost can be obtained on the website.
Nigel brought along some plants including lovely smelling herbs for the
members to purchase.
The meeting ended with tea and biscuits followed by a raffle
The Womens Institute from Ilene Iles
Our July Meeting (Summer Party) was opened by
Evelyn Holdaway who advised those present that,
very sadly, one of our long-standing Members,
Peggy Pearman, had passed away and asked us to
observe a minutes silence in her memory.
Jerusalem was sung and the Business Meeting followed. Reports were
given and Val Denny reminded everyone of the visit on the 15
th
July to
see Doris LEnfants daughters Alpacas. A decision was taken to have
a Craft Competition in November.
Joyce Rawlinson won the Single Bloom in a Vase with a beautiful peach
coloured rose, Marlene King won the Flower Arrangement in a Wine
Glass, Doris LEnfants table won the Places in Basingstoke Quiz and
Sylvia Miles table won the Pictures of Flowers Quiz.
A delicious tea provided by the Committee followed and the Raffle was
drawn.
