Pollutant 1 (Carbon Monoxide)

Poisonous gas found in the exhaust of cars

Weak greenhouse gas

Intrinsic Properties- Flammability, taste, odor
Extrinsic Properties- weight, mass

Threats to Human Health
1st hand smoking (smokers)
o reduces the amount of oxygen taken up by a persons red blood
cells and delivery to the bodys organs and tissues
o affects the respiratory (lungs) and circulatory (heart, vein,
arteries) system
o causes diseases such as heart failure, cancer and DEATH
2nd hand smoking (non-smokers)
o the same with 1st hand smoking
o heart diseases
o asthma
o DEATH

Threats to the Environment
CO is a gas that pollutes the air which mainly released by car exhausts
Weak direct greenhouse gas
Has strong INDIRECT effects on global warming
o Carbon monoxide (CO) is a pollutant that affects major greenhouse gases like
methane, carbon dioxide, and tropospheric (lower atmospheric) ozone. It thus
plays a role in both air pollution and climate change, and is therefore regulated in
many parts of the world.
o CO is unique among pollutants in the lower atmosphere in that it lasts for roughly
a month, long enough for it to be transported long distances

Sustainable Solution
Lessen cigarette consumption (expound)
Implement rules and regulations imposed by the barangay
Increase price
Awareness (effects of cigarettes)

Stakeholders
Consumers (students, professors, locals)
Distributors (tobacco companies)
Barangay officials (who pass and implement rules)

Strategies
Talk to university and college heads and officials
o A farther no smoking policy (20-50ft away from the campus) which
leads students to become lazy to walk a farther distance to smoke
o Conduct a seminar to students about the effects of cigarettes

Talk to barangay officials about implementing a no smoking zone or on a
certain time frame on a daily basis (ex. No smoking from 1pm-7pm)
Suggest to tobacco company distributors to increase their prices which can
result to less people buying and can sell a substitute such as e-cigarettes
o Article from Inquirer:MANILA, PhilippinesDespite the passage of the sin tax law,
the prices of cigarettes in the Philippines remain among the lowest in Southeast Asia, an
antismoking group said yesterday.
Emer Rojas, president of New Vois Association of the Philippines, said the first edition of
the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (Asean) Tobacco Atlas showed that the
country continued to have one of the lowest prices of cigarette products in the region and
even in the world.
For example, local brand Fortune is pegged at 58 centavos and Marlboro at $1.16 a
pack. But in Singapore, which is one of the Asean countries with good tobacco control
policies, a pack of Marlboro is sold at $9, said Rojas, a laryngeal cancer survivor.

Pollutant 2 (Nicotine)
Addictive drug found in tobacco
Can be found in insecticides
This stimulates the central nervous system and endocrine glands, which
causes a sudden release of glucose. Stimulation is then followed by
depression and fatigue, leading the user to seek more nicotine

Intrinsic Properties
Odor
Taste
Extrinsic properties
Weight
Mass

Threats to health
Not life threatening
Causes nausea, headache because of the inhalation which gets in the
brain in high quantities.
Women who smoke generally have earlier menopause. Pregnant
women who smoke cigarettes run an increased risk of having stillborn
or premature infants or infants with low birth weight. Children of
women who smoked while pregnant have an increased risk for
developing conduct disorders
Threats to environment
NONE

Pollutant 3 (Tar)
Oily, sticky substance which remains after tobacco
Tar can be found in a brown solid form at the end of a smoked cigarette.

Threats to health
Affects the respiratory system
o Lung cancer
o Chronic bronchitis
o Emphysema
o Periodontitis, a gum disease that can result in the loss of teeth
o Can damage lung cells that keep tumors from forming
