Learn About Landscape Recommendations
Learn about Landscape Recommendations for Adopting SAP
Technologies Part 1
In this first session, learn about what SAP is planning to do to
provide customers with better information to support landscape
planning and technology deployment? Including areas related to
overall system environment and compatibility and inter-operability
of SAP products and technologies.
We will describe what SAP understands today about your
information needs with respect to technology adoption and what
resources are available today to support SAP customers in this
area. We will also review SAPs current plans to extend existing
resources and provide additional resources to better support your
deployment planning needs.
Please attend the second interactive session (# 2306) to influence
how SAP can better support your needs in this area.
Target group: Members of IT and the Office of the CIO, including IT
/ Enterprise Architects, Technology and Landscape Planners,
Technology Project Leads, IT Strategists.

Why use this tool?
A graphical landscape planning tool, showing technical systems, their
details and dependencies.
Landscape Planner addresses the following challenges that customers
currently face:
How do I get an understanding of systems in the landscape, both at a
high-level and low level?
How can I document the current landscape and use this as a basis for
planning any changes?
How can I plan changes, analyze the impact, and communicate the
results for execution?
Use of the Landscape Planner
Reporting on landscape - System types, roles, dependencies,
landscape patterns, etc.
Planning changes in the landscape by IT Project Manager, Business
Process Expert, IT Administrator, IT Architect,

Deployment Recommendations
for SAP Products
Allow flexibility by offering different deployment options (not one-size-fits-all)
Provide guidance by rating different options
Ease decisions by listing pros & cons
Simplify consumption of information by using a common methodology
Increase reliability by considering SAP product strategy, achieved landscape qualities
and cross-product alignment

III
Clear recommendations by categorization of deployment options
General Recommendation
Best choice for majority of typical
landscape use cases
Recommended by SAPs strategy
Accepted by a wide base of
customers
Reasonable Alternative
Useful choice for certain use
cases or customer scenarios
Supported and confirmed by
SAPs strategy
Possible Exception
Only useful for specific use cases
Supported by SAP, but limitations
might occur
Outlining main important aspects
Optimal trade-off between flexibility and simplicity
Applied to main building blocks of SAP products

Alternative deployment options typically have different pros & cons
Customer individual assessment not be compensated

LANDSCAPE RECOMMENDATIONS
Generic landscape recommendations for Process Integration, Business Process
Composition, and Process Orchestration
Process Integration / Process Orchestration
Single Hub Installation
General Recommendation
Shared usage for both A2A and B2B, stateless and stateful processing
Deployed as a central system
ESR/SR included
Benefits
Less complex system architecture
Central governance of meta data
Central configuration, monitoring, and administration
Support for stateless message processing, and stateful
message orchestration

Considerations
Installation of additional SAP NetWeaver usage types
not supported
For Process Orchestration, system sizing and
configuration must reflect both human-centric and
integration-centric scenarios

ESR&SR
SLD BPM/BRM
Process Integration / Process Orchestration
Single Hub with Additional Adapter Engines
(Distributed Landscape)
General Recommendation
Single hub system with additional multiple non-central adapter engines
Use cases: localization, business continuity, security*
Benefits
Centralized governance, maintenance, and monitoring
De-coupled runtimes and distributed load
Separating pure messaging from process orchestration
Localization: Reduced message travel time and reduced
network load in global networks
Localization: Local AAEs serve local business needs
Business continuity: Minimize planned downtime via switch
over
Security: Secure deployment of AAE instances in DMZ
enforcing network isolation for B2B scenarios

Considerations
BPM/ccBPM scenarios require central Process
Integration/Process Orchestration runtime
For Process Orchestration, two Integrated Configuration
Objects required for scenarios spanning both Adapter
Engines
* Refer to how-to guide on SCN, see additional information
Example
Process Integration / Process Orchestration
Multiple Hub Installation (Federated Landscape)
Benefits
Separation of Process Integration/Process Orchestration
systems due to different reasons, such as technical
aspects, business requirements or geographical
distribution
Systems can be optimized for their respective use case
ESR can be connected to multiple systems
Central development and service design

Considerations
Central ESR requires at least SAP NetWeaver 7.31
Installation of additional SAP NetWeaver usage types
not supported
Increased TCO due to additional administration effort

Example
Reasonable Alternative
Segmentation into multiple domains*

and integration-centric

* Refer to how-to guide on SCN, see additional information
Reasonable Alternative
Lean pure Java-based integration broker without Business Process Management
or Business Rules Management capabilities
ESR & SR included within AEX installation
Process Integration
Pure Java Installation Option of SAP NetWeaver PI (AEX)
Benefits
Lean pure Java-based installation option supporting basic
ESB functionality (stateless message handling comprising
interface determination, mapping, routing, and
connectivity via adapters)
Less complex system architecture

Considerations
No support for integration-centric processes nor business
rules scenarios
No support for WS-RM connectivity
No upgrade to Process Orchestration option possible
SAP recommends to consider full Process Orchestration
installation for future flexibility
Example

ESR&SR
SLD
Business Process Composition
Single System Installation
of Business Process Management
General Recommendation
Standalone BPM system for business process composition scenarios
No need for integration capabilities (beyond Web Services and RFC)
Basic Enterprise Portal capabilities with local UWL
Local ESR and SR
Benefits
System optimized for human-centric processes
Installation of additional Usage Types supported
Local UWL can be used to display tasks
Slightly lower footprint compared to Process
Orchestration option

Considerations
Connectivity via Web Services or RFC only
Connection to external LDAP or central identity
management might be required for workflow driven
scenarios
