3adio+ne 4) 5:#6 is a )id,&ay )ultimedia and BB2 ;orldwide "enture in
India# 3adio+ne 4) 5:#6 head quartered in )umbai has its presence in Bangalore,

youthful and energetic channel, which listeners will return to for its .:*= offering of
hit songs# %he station also has a 8ournalistic team to de"elop content in segments such

and entertainment#

slots# %he station will play songs according to the mood, which listeners are in that
time slot# 4or instance, breakfast dri"e will play songs with a high energy le"el? late
mornings it will target housewi"es and hence play a mi9 of popular numbers along
with old songs# %he late afternoon slot is targeted at college,going students# %he late
e"ening slot will play soft and soothing numbers for listeners to retire for the day# %he
late night retro slot, as the name suggests, will play all old songs# %he gra"eyard shift
will make the listener call it a day with gentle music#

3adio (roducers play a "ital role in any 3adio station in managing the content and the
segments of the 3adio shows# A 3adio (roducer is responsible for controlling the
output of radio programmes the role in"ol"es acti"ities from content management,
generating ideas, scripting for Ad"ertisements or station characters, to editing and
presentations to client too# %hey are in"ol"ed in the entire process of broadcasting
content for radio# %hey manage teams of 3adio Jockeys, Broadcast assistants, studio
and sound engineers and &Js# Selecting music? scheduling, scriptwriting and
researching are key aspects of the role#

+n a day,to,day basis a 3adio (roducer has to pro"ide content to the 3adio Jockeys#
2ontent writing is one of the most important works a 3adio (roducer has to perform
for each show and daily# ;hate"er content the 3adio (roducer pro"ides, the 3adio
Jockeys con"erts it into a 3adio segment# 3adio Jockeys brings life into the content
pro"ided and presents it in his*her own way# @ach 3adio Show will ha"e its own
unique segment or sponsors or target groups? therefore the 3adio (roducer has to
collect information based on each segment#

%he 3adio (roducer has to assimilate the content from "arious channel or sources#
%he content is not obtained from only few sources# Its need "ast resources#

too# %herefore a careful scanning and surfing the abo"e sources is performed, and the
best and the most appropriate news has to be selected and must be complied in a
document called the In.#r+ati#n ,it%*#
In.#r+ati#n ,it%* is a document, which contains all the information that has to
be pro"ided to the 3adio Jockeys# Some times e"en paper cutting or photocopies are
made of the article, which is newsworthy and attached with the In.#r+ati#n ,it%*
document# It is prepared on a daily basis# All the information and news gathered ha"e
to be classified into "arious genres like,

)ost listeners want to know the latest happenings of tinsel town# %he film
news is one of the most heard and interesting news# %he segments of the
3adio shows are based on the news of the 1indi and <annada 4ilm Industry#
%herefore a lot of research has to be done in gathering these segments#

%his is a story or news that represents the mass audience, who want to know
what is happening internationally, nationally, inside the state or the city# %his
contains a "ery rele"ant issue or an e"ent that has occurred "ery recently# But
the news or the story is not presented in the e9act same manner as some
issues can be serious# So the 3adio (roducer has to pro"ide a different angle
to the story, which is informati"e and humorous#

%his is a type of news, which gi"es information about some latest trends in
fashion, health, house keeping, electronic gadgets, sales or discounts or

important# %his news is 8ust for the entertainment and fun and cannot be taken
seriously#

)any times inter"iews are conducted by 3adio Jockeys on celebrities or
politicians, therefore a good research has to be done so ask the right questions
are to be asked and for the right occasion too#

2elebrities are always in news so its good to ha"e some more insight into
their life as it can add more "alue to any news segment# Some times a
birthday of a 2elebrity may carry more listeners so the 3adio Jockey has to
take more about the 2elebrity as the listeners are curious to know more about
their fa"orites# %hings like their schooling, hobbies, fa"orites which include
color, food, clothes, destination, song etc#

All 3adio stations conduct contest on a regular basis and gi"e out gifts too#
%herefore e"en questions are to be prepared and pro"ided to the 3adio
Jockey#

All the information or news collected must ha"e to be appro"ed by the 3adio Jockey and
the (rogramming &irector# So a discussion with them is to be conducted where the
(roducer has to (itch his stories# In this session, the (roducer has to e9plain the story and
the angle by which it will be presented +n,air and the 3adio Jockey and the
(rogramming &irector will take a decision on the story which can be aired# %his
discussion is necessary as mentioned earlier a 3adio station follows a format and has a
specific %arget roup and also may ha"e any political inclination and the stories ha"e to
cater to all these parameters# 4inally, after a round of discussion, some stories may get
appro"ed and some re8ected or e"en postponed for further dates# %hese appro"ed stories
will be inserted into the into the (rogramming flow of that particular show#

After the discussion with the 3adio Jockey and (rogramming &irector, the stories
appro"ed are inserted into (rogramming 4low 2hart# %hey are placed with respect to the
timings and the segments# @ach 3adio Jockeys has his*her own (rogramming 4low 2hart#
"r#&ra++in& F!#/ Chart is a document, which has details of all the segments and their
respecti"e stories of the show, which are chronologically arranged with respect to the
e9act time when each segment !ill "e aire## It is handed o"er to the 3adio Jockey and
based on the information pro"ided in this document, the 3adio Jockey presents the show#
It contains all the details of the stories, contests, promos and recordings#

)any segments in a 3adio show will require 3ecordings# %he recording can be of the
listeners, callers, contest participants or contest winners or sometimes e"en the "oice of
the 3adio Jockeys# )ost 3ecordings are performed by the 3adio (roducer and sometimes
in the presence of the 3adio Jockey# %hese recordings are specific to each 3adio Show,
therefore based on the theme a recording is performed#
4irstly, the person whose "oice is to be recorded has to be intimated and also brief
him*her about the reason as to the need of his*her "oice# Sometimes the 3adio (roducer
has e"en script the speaker>s dialogues and statements so as to make it sound good on
3adio# All recordings do not come out perfectly on the first attempt, so many attempts are
made and the speaker may ha"e to repeat a couple of times# %here may be long pauses or
usage of a politically incorrect word, thought or a statement too, or the other
disturbances# %herefore, after recording the Sound bites, it has to be edited so that the
sound bite is ready to be aired#
@diting of these Sound bites can be performed using softwares like &ON' &ound
For#e( &ON' )e#as or *A*# %he length of these Sound bites has to be as per the
requirement of the segment# After editing, they ha"e to be named with a particular code
called the CUT ID and each code is unique for a particular 3adio show# Cater, the 2!%
I&s are uploaded into the $%$ so&t!are, which is the software used by the Ci"e Studio#
%he details of the 2!% I&s ha"e to be informed to the 3adio Jockey so that the 3adio
Jockey known when to play the particular Sound bite#

%here are many segments that needs recording of "oices, 8ingles and opinions# %his is
specific to each 3adio segment, as each show will ha"e unique concepts# +n a day,to,
day basis these recordings are performed and the same has to be edited#
8. ,irth'Day ,a@ra
In this segment a person whose birthday falls on the same day will be contacted
through the telephone and fooled# %his person is called as the Birthday Bakra in
the terms of 3adio+-@ show# %he 3adio (roducer has to pro"ide a Birthday
Bakra e"eryday through his*her sources and he*she has to get all possible details
of the person# 3adio (roducer also has to find out the right time to call the sub8ect#
!sually the 3adio (roducer in the presence of the 3adio Jockey will call
the sub8ect and will make the 3adio Jockey to ask some weird and irrational
questions and irritate the sub8ect# 4inally, the 3adio Jockey discloses his identity
and wishes the sub8ect on behalf of the 3adio station and also promises him a gift
"oucher#
-ow, the 3adio (roducer will ha"e to edit this con"ersation and con"ert it
into a Sound bite that can be played in the 3adio show# It has to fit in the time
pro"ided for the segment# After editing, it has to be composed into a 2apsule and
also a %easer# A 2apsule is a Sound bite, which with the actual con"ersation also
has the music and certain special effects, which are pre defined for this particular
segment# %he 2apsule is played in the actual segment# A %easer is a Sound bite,
which is shorter in length and contains only the response of the Birthday Bakra
greeting all the listeners on,air# %he %easer is played before and after the show and
is intended to in"ite the listeners and make them curious about that segment#

B. Trin&'trin&
%ring,tring is similar to the pre"ious segment where again a sub8ect is fooled, but
in this segment a professional is called and is asked to impro"e his way of
working# %he 3adio (roducer has to obtain details a professional e"eryday
through his*her sources and he*she has to get all possible professional details of
the sub8ect# 3adio (roducer also has to find out the right time to call the sub8ect#
Basically, the 3adio Jockey will impersonate himself as a professional and
complain the method the sub8ect is performing his work and will also gi"e the
sub8ect some tips to impro"e his working habits# 4inally when the sub8ect gets
irritated the 3adio Jockey will re"eal his identity and calm the sub8ect#
-ow, the 3adio (roducer will ha"e to edit this con"ersation and con"ert it
into a Sound bite then also prepare a 2apsule and a %easer that can be played in
the 3adio show#
6. >.=9 S%cia! Ca!!%r ( Int%r0i%/
In the .45 'pe(ial Caller segment, an indi"idual with a special talent, message or
an achie"ement is inter"iewed on,air# %he sub8ect will be asked to e9plain the
deed he*she has performed and also the reason what inspired him to make this
effort# %he intent of this section is to bring out the efficacy of the deed and also
inspire the listeners to follow the same and help change the world and make it a
better place# %his is more or less like an inter"iew#
%he 3adio (roducer has to on day,to,day basis get such indi"iduals who
can contribute to the segment# All the details of the indi"idual ha"e to be obtained
and proper research has to be performed to assess his authenticity# Also draft
suitable questions, so that the 3adio Jockey knows what to ask and what not to
ask too#

listeners#

can perform a special talent and contribute to the segment# All the details of the
indi"idual ha"e to be obtained# Also draft suitable questions, so that the 3adio
Jockey knows what to ask and what not to ask too#

2ontests are a "ery regular happening at any 3adio station# %herefore a lot of importance
is stressed on them# %hey also help in increases the popularity of a 3adio station# %here
are "arious steps in managing a 2ontest'
1. I#enti&i(ation or initiation o& a Contest
)ost contests are either identified by a 3adio (roducer or sponsored by 2lients or
Ad"ertisers# A 3adio (roducer has to be constantly looking for a"enues for
conducting contests by means of celebrities birthdays, anni"ersaries, special
e"ents, mo"ie releases or sporting e"ents# 2lients or Ad"ertisers also sponsor
contests to promote their brand#
2. )reparation o& the *+estions &or the Contest
Appropriate questions ha"e to be pro"ided for the contest and with correct
answers# %he questions must ha"e rele"ance and must be related to the concept of
the contest#
3. ,-e(+tion o& the (ontests
2ontests are to be scheduled for certain 3adio shows and the respecti"e 3adio
Jockey is informed about the same# %he 3adio Jockey has to be briefed about the
contest and the rules of the contest and the sponsors and the gifts too#
4. %rrange.ent o& gi&ts
%his is one of the most important part of conducting a contest as the participants
participate in the intention of winning the gifts and the gifts ha"e to be equally
attracti"e and interesting#

4irstly, the 3adio (roducer has to allocate funds for the gifts and then get
the appro"al from the (rogramming &irector# %hen the 3adio (roducer has to
decide what gift has to be gi"en for the winners# If the contest is sponsored by
2lients or Ad"ertisers, the gifts are also determined by them#
After the decision is taken on the gifts the 3adio (roducer has to "isit the
places where these gifts are a"ailable and has to secure them#

%he 3adio Jockey will conduct the contest and will select the winner# %he 3adio
Jockey will take all the details of the contest winner and hand it o"er to the 3adio
(roducer# %he 3adio (roducer will intimate the contest winner and will also

Scrit Writin&
Script writing was another "ery important aspect of a 3adio (roducer as sometimes
the 3adio Jockeys will require to be assisted with certain comple9 topics like politics,
business or technical terminology# Script writing is 8ust as much a craft as
inter"iewing, tape editing and mi9ing# %he length of each narration segment is
generally determined by how much information and conte9t is necessary to make
sense of taped segments# Scripting requires a certain le"el of artistic or stylistic
writing in which the wish to engage a listener#
3adio+-@ has certain station characters, which ha"e defined characteristics, and
the script must be consistent o"er all bites# %hese characters ha"e made an entry into
the listeners mind by their humor or wit, so the script must be as good as the last one#
o Katri ManCa, is the <annada "ersion of 2ircuit of )unnaiBhai fame#
%his character is a "ery innocent and brainless# !sually, he poses a
problem and also pro"ides a "ery silly and a humorous answer#
o Li.% #n ,an&a!#r% /ith RaCni Saar, is an imitation of the famous %amil
super star and his take on issues in Bangalore# 1e speaks in a "ery funny
accent and boasts about his skills of tacking issues in Bangalore in his own
manner, which defies all laws of physics, logic and language#
Script also has to be written for clients who want to place an Ad"ertisement with
the 3adio station# %hese scripts ha"e to be written in an adhoc manner as clients may
approach at any point of time and may want an Ad"ertisement instantly#

+utdoor Broadcasting * Ci"e Cinks are segments when a 3adio (roducer will ha"e to
"isits outdoor "enues for e"ents, e9hibitions or parties and act as a 3adio Jockey by
pro"iding information about that e"ent# %he 3adio (roducer will ha"e to interact with
the people in"ol"ed in the e"ent and gather their opinion and e9perience from the
"enue and coordinate with the studio 3adio Jockey#
Sometimes the 3adio (roducer has to approach passersby and interact with them
by asking them about their "iews and opinions about any current issue or incident#

%his e"ent was a marketing initiati"e of 3adio+-@ to gain more business from the
store @,Eone which is the sister concern of (antaloons# (antaloons pro"ide a huge
source of re"enue to 3adio+-@ in cities like )umbai, &elhi and 2hennai# So to
generate re"enues from (antaloons e"en in Bangalore, this initiati"e was
e9perimented#
%he e"ent was conducted at the @,Eone store at 2osmos )all in Bangalore on 5
th
June .//=, and was conducted in the presence of a <annada actress )s Sharmila
)andre#
A %reasure hunt was conducted in the premises of the @,Eone store# %he )2 ga"e
0/ clues to the participants and the first three participants who successfully completed
the competition with the ma9imum number of correct answers were gi"en gifts#
I was in,charge of creating all the questions, scripting the )2>s speech with the
clues and pro"ide the right answers# I was also in"ol"ed in the "erification and
declaration of the winners#
After the announcements of the winners, I recorded the "oice of the actress )s
Sharmila )andre and her "iews and e9perience on the e"ents and also "oices of the
winners, and these "oices were edited and con"erted into capsules and was aired#
A sample of the &cript of the 1REA&2RE 32N1 conducted at the venue is provided in
the Appendix F.

would interact with 67/ children who are passionate about the game of cricket#
)r# (onting would spend some time with them in the nets by playing a game of
cricket and also gi"e them some "aluable tips for impro"ing their cricketing skills and
leadership skills#

3adio+-@ had the responsibility of selecting the young cricketers within the
age group of 0: to 0F for the e"ent by means of a contest on air# %his contest
was conducted for a period of 0/ day from June 6

(onting and whoe"er gi"es the correct answers will be selected#
I was gi"en the responsibility of preparing for the questions that had to be
asked on a daily basis to the caller# So a thorough research had to be
conducted and rele"ant facts had to be gathered and framed into questions#
A sample of 4uestions aout Mr. "ontin# is provided in the Appendix 5.

3adio+-@ and draft the questions that can be asked to )3# (onting on the
day of the e"ent#

As many people participated and all had a great time, we wanted to record
their "oice and e9periences and beam it on air# So I was in charge of
interacting the participants and e"en their parents and recording their "oices
and e9periences# Cater these sound bites had to be edited and con"erted into a
2apsule and a %easer#

@"ery e"ent has to be summariBed by a (ress Brief so that it can be pro"ided to
the media or the clients# %he (ress Brief contains the brief summary of the
incidents of the e"ent and the manner the e"ent was conducted#

2oca 2ola Speed Jamming is a national e"ent, which promotes the idea of Speed
&ating or Blind &ating# %his e"ent was conducted for a period of Si9 days starting
from 05

June .//=# %his contest aims in bringing two singles
together and pro"iding an opportunity for them to interact# A girl will come on,air and
ask a question to all the boys# %he boys must reply back with the Wac@i%*t an-
CraAi%*t answer for the girls question and the girl will select the best answer# %hen
the couple will recei"e a food "oucher, which is like their first date#
+n a daily basis I had to scan the calls of the girl who wants to go on,air and ask
the questions# Select the girl with the best question and good attitude# 3ecord her
"oice and prepare the 2apsule and %easer and inform the 3adio Jockey# ;hen the
contest begins, scanning all the replies from the boys recei"ed through telephone calls
or S)Ss and coordinating with the 3adio Jockey and the girl whose had asked the
question# 4inally, with the consent of the girl selecting the most impressi"e reply and
declaring the winner# After declaration of the winners, arrangement for the deli"ery of
the gifts is to be performed#
%his was a contest that I handled single handedly and performed all the aspects of the
(roduction#

3adio+-@ promotes many new mo"ies and also conducts many promos, contests and
inter"iews of the actors in the mo"ie# All these e"ents ha"e to be coordinated by the
3adio (roducer#
8. Aa Ka Surr#r ( Hi+%*h R%*h+iayya 4,#!!y/##-5
%his was a "ery hyped mo"ie and the debut mo"ie of the actor turned singer
composer Hi+%*h R%*h+iayya. Sound bites of an inter"iew Hi+%*h
R%*h+iayya was sent by the 1ead office at )umbai# At our station we had to
make a similar inter"iew with a local 3adio Jockey# %herefore questions had to be
scripted and gi"en to the 3adio Jockey and recording of the local 3adio Jockey
asking the same question had to be performed and con"erted into three segments#
Also free tickets were gi"en to lucky callers and manage the deli"ery of the
tickets#
B. Sathya0an Sa0ithri ( Ra+%*h Ar0in- 4San-a!/##-5
%his is the second mo"ie of <annada actor Ra+%*h Ar0in- as a director# %his
mo"ie was promoted through 3adio+-@# I had to prepare questions for the
inter"iew with the actors of the mo"ie namely 3amesh, Jennifer and -ethra and
also conduct the inter"iew with the presence of the 3adio Jockey# Cater edit the
same and create a 2apsule and a %easer#
Also free tickets were gi"en to lucky callers and manage the deli"ery of the
tickets#

CONCLUSION
%he internship at 3adio+-@ 4) 5:#6 was a fulfilling e9perience where I was able to
put the knowledge gained to practice# %his helped me in the process of building in the
necessary skills that a 3adio (roducer has to inculcate#
I was really lucky to ha"e been in"ol"ed in some ma8or e"ents like @,Bone, 3icky
(onting and the Speed Jamming# +n the process I did commit many mistakes, but it is
all a learning e9perience#
I was also gi"en lot of responsibility and was asked to manage a ma8or promo of the
2oca 2ola Speed Jamming all by myself and my Super"isor was quite happy with my
efforts#
;hen my Super"isor addressed me on my last day of the internship, he ga"e me a
score of 0/ on 0/# %hey ha"e promised me that in the future if there are any
requirements by the organiBation, I will be considered as their first choice#
I would like to say that this stint with 3adio+-@ as one of the most memorable days
of my life and ha"e a larger family#
