back to you in the same spirit of love that you gave him to us for
preparation. We assure you that we have trained him in the ways
he should go and affirm that he is ready to assume the
responsibilities of manhood.

For two decades now, June has been
family month. You can pick up the Family
Month series of tapes from the Akiba today
after service and catch up on all the ground we
have covered Biblically and sermonically for
all the years we have investigated the many

CONGRATULATIONS TO
AN 11-YEAR-OLD!
On the second Sunday of this month
we celebrated Children’s Day. On the
second Sunday in this month we lifted up
many of the youth of our church who are
doing exceedingly, abundantly above and
beyond all that would be expected of
teens and preteens. One of our youngsters,
however, did not have his name included “in
the program.”
Eleven-year-old Shawon Cameron
Jackson is entering the 7th grade this fall.
Shawon has been on the Honor Roll for three
years and is actively involved in the Student
Council and Beta Club. Shawon sings with
The Little Warriors for Christ and he was
singing on second Sunday.
Shawon will join 200 middle school
students from throughout the United States
at the Junior National Young Leaders
Conference from Sunday, July 31st to
Tuesday, August 9, 2005 in Washington, DC.
The Junior National Young Leaders
Conference introduces young people to the
rich tradition of leadership throughout
American history, while helping them
develop their own leadership skills. During
the program, Shawon will take part in
educational activities and presentations as well

as meet with elected officials and key
congressional staff members on Capitol Hill.
Shawon will also get to see historical
sites that have a great deal of meaning when it
comes to African American history. Colonial
Williamsburg is a city that the Africans built.
Harper’s Ferry is where John Brown led his
raid in an attempt to end slavery. Those are
just two of the many sites that Shawon
will get to see this summer.
Shawon will also study the impact of
leadership through critical periods of
American history including the Civil War
Reconstruction - both of which are directly
related to African American history. He will
study the Civil Rights Movement and learn
what a long legacy we have in this country as
children of the most high King!
We ask you to remember him in your
prayers and to give him and his mother,
Pamela Jackson, a high five this Sunday.

STEWARDSHIP
A LESSON FROM LIGHTHOUSES
For centuries, lighthouses have been placed
along coasts and islands across the world.
Their beacons have prevented countless
shipwrecks and saved countless lives. It’s not
surprising that many people feel affectionate
toward them and want to preserve those
which are in danger of being torn down.
Today, lighthouses still in use are automated.
But before modern times, lighthouse keepers
led lonely lives. Maintaining the light
required long hours of work. The pay was
usually low, and yet, these people rarely
complained. They knew the importance of
their task.
The greatest gift of the keepers was their
time spent building fires, polishing lenses
and repairing rescue equipment. Day-by-day,
often for years, the keepers gave their time
unselfishly, so that sailors and travelers, who
otherwise would have died, could live.
Lighthouses are sometimes used as a symbol
for Christ. He too provides constant
guidance, just as the keepers did. In return
for His help, shouldn’t we spend more of our
time helping others? It may be that we might
unknowingly save some lives as well!

Recently, I watched the
documentary entitled “Outfoxed.” This
documentary showed how Fox News, in
particular, literally spun stories so far from
the original intent of the story, that the truth
was unrecognizable at all. Many media
outlets today, controlled by right-winged
conservatives, are doing the same with
stories, especially as they relate to the
illegal, immoral war in Iraq.
One of the major stories, that is not
being spun and not being reported at all in
major media outlets, is the amount of
people who are not only detained illegally
by the U.S. Military, but who are also
dying at the hands of the U.S. military in
Guantanamo Bay.
According to New York Times
opinion columnist, “The abuse at
Guantanamo and within the whole U.S.
Military system dealing with terrorism is
out of control. Tell me, how is it that over
100 detainees have died in U.S. custody so
far? Heart attacks?” Of the 100 that have
died at the hands of the military, over 25
have been ruled to be victims of homicide
by medical examiners.

our eyes every day. And we honor those
soldiers who fought and died. Their blood
is on the hands of George W. Bush.
However, God loves all of God’s children
equally. The blood of the detainees at
Guantanamo is also on the hands of George
Bush. These are persons who have been
detained, many times without an attorney
or any due process. There is no justice in
their situations.
I urge you to write or call your
Congressperson and demand that the
killings and injustices cease in Guantanamo
Bay.

McMILLAN is
currently the
pastor of the
Shekinah
Chapel and has
served the
people of
Shekinah in
this capacity
for the last ten years. The preaching
ministry of Pastor Sean centers around the
psychological, spiritual and social
implications of love.
For him, love is more than just an
emotional exchange between two people; it
is, in fact, the occasion for everything we
believe as Christians. Love is the
necessary condition for the possibility of
grace and the aim of Christianity as such.
Pastor McMillan’s message is not simply
that we should love one another, but is,
rather, a call to hope, social transformation
and existential freedom through the often
strange and mysterious transactions of
love. In short, love is not about how we
feel; it is about how we live. It is the

something greater than ourselves and the
very substance of a committed life.
Rev. Sean McMillan is a native of New
York City and currently lives on the south
side of Chicago where he is a graduate
student at the University of Chicago in the
area of moral philosophy. He is a graduate
of Wagner College and the Lutheran
School of Theology where he earned his
Bachelor’s and Master’s degrees,
respectively. Pastor Sean is also a member
of the teaching faculty in the Doctor of
Ministry Program at McCormick
Theological Seminary.
Rev. Sean McMillan is a dedicated and
innovative leader, so much so that Pastor
Sean will be featured in the summer issue
of the African American Pulpit as one of
the nation’s more promising preachers in
the magazine’s “Twenty to Watch” salute
to gifted young African American
preachers.
