10 That very night the believers sent Paul
and Silas off to Beroea; and when they
arrived, they went to the Jewish synagogue.
11 These Jews were more receptive than
those in Thessalonica, for they welcomed
the message very eagerly and examined the
scriptures every day to see whether these
things were so. 12 Many of them therefore
believed, including not a few Greek
women and men of high standing. 13 But
when the Jews of Thessalonica learned that
the word of God had been proclaimed by
Paul in Beroea as well, they came there
too, to stir up and incite the crowds.
14 Then the believers immediately sent
Paul away to the coast, but Silas and
Timothy remained behind. 15 Those who
conducted Paul brought him as far as
Athens; and after receiving instructions to
have Silas and Timothy join him as soon as
possible, they left him.

Epicurean and Stoic philosophers debated
with him. Some said, "What does this
babbler want to say?" Others said, "He
seems to be a proclaimer of foreign
divinities." (This was because he was
telling the good news about Jesus and the
resurrection.) 19 So they took him and
brought him to the Areopagus and asked
him, "May we know what this new
teaching is that you are presenting?
20 It sounds rather strange to us, so we
would like to know what it means."
21 Now all the Athenians and the
foreigners living there would spend their
time in nothing but telling or hearing
something new. 22 Then Paul stood in
front of the Areopagus and said,
"Athenians, I see how extremely religious
you are in every way. 23 For as I went
through the city and looked carefully at the
objects of your worship, I found among
them an altar with the inscription, ‘To an

 CONFESSION OF SINS

Almighty and Most Merciful Father, we come before You, acknowledging our sins,
our shortcomings, and our breaking of our Covenant with You.

Not only have we done things we ought not to have done, said things we ought not
to have said, left undone so many things we ought to have done and been silent when
we should have witnessed for You.

Not only are we guilty of that, O Lord; but we have also closed our eyes and
pretended not to see the injustices, the racism and the evil which pervade our
everyday lives.

We have shut our ears and pretended not to hear the cries for liberation which come
from the lips, lives and hearts of the oppressed - even our own Black brothers and
sisters!

Forgive us, O Lord, renew our courage and faith, and keep us ever mindful of Thy
great sacrifice. Hear us, we beseech Thee, as we come to You in love and worship
giving Your name the praise forevermore.

Be Still And Know!
This past Monday, as my family and I
were leaving Los Cabos, savoring the last few
moments of our wonderful week together,
Hurricane Katrina was wrecking the lives of
hundreds of thousands of residents of New
Orleans. While we were laughing and smiling,
others were screaming and crying. Still others
were drowning and dying!
Some of our students (members of
TUCC) were evacuating New Orleans
(students from Dillard and Xavier). Some of
our students were leaving Grambling and
Southern to seek refuge in Alabama, in
Jackson, Mississippi, in Houston, Texas, and in
Memphis, Tennessee. Some of our members
were on the phone frantically trying to reach
their relatives who were trapped in the path of
the hurricane.
Our staff member, Reggie Carter, (a
native of New Orleans) has a sister in New
Orleans whose home was completely
demolished by the storm. Other members have
loved ones there who cannot be reached
because the phone lines are down. One whole
section of the city where poor blacks live has
been cut off, and with no televisions, the
residents there did not know that a mandatory
evacuation had been ordered so they died
and/or are dying as we worship today!
On Wednesday, I got a letter from one of our
relocated members. I am sharing it with you
today. Wednesday, August 31st, was a day of
prayer for the citizens of the state of Louisiana.
Today, I am asking you for a moment of

silence, a moment of prayer and a moment of
reflection as we lift up those who lost their
lives because of the storm. Their deaths (and
they are still dying) remind me of how serious
life is and how precious life is. Hundreds of
thousands have died and are still dying in
Sudan as we worship. Let the deaths of our
loved ones remind us of the deaths of their
loved ones.
Pray today for those who have died
and for those loved ones who live with those
deaths on their minds every day! Pray today
for the people of God to wake up and see the
importance of life and to see just how precious
the gift of life is. Pray today that this weekend
of fun, barbecue and festivities will not block
out the reality of the losses we have suffered
and the importance of preserving life, saving
lives, ending war and choosing the Way of
Him who came to give the world LIFE! He
still says to us today, "Be still and know that I
am God!"

Hello everybody,
First of all, please forgive the blast e-
mail and any bad grammar this message may
contain. I have communicated with some of you
individually. Others I haven't been able to. I'm
sure most of you have seen the footage on
television of the devastating aftermath of

Hurricane Katrina. I must tell you honestly
that what you have seen is only part of the
whole story.
Governor Blanco has done an excellent
job in her interviews but no words can describe
how terrible this storm has affected Louisiana.
I have friends who have lost everything and an
aunt who evacuated to Houston who probably
lost everything as well. I also have an aunt,
uncle and cousin who stayed behind. I don't
know their status.
Most of New Orleans and other cities
in Southeast Louisiana are underwater. More
than a million people are homeless. Tens of
thousands are in shelters. Thousands are in
desperate need of rescue. We are certain that
there are numerous deaths. The rescue teams
have to push past dead bodies to get to
survivors. They can't even count casualties yet.
And, as you may have seen, there is chaos in
the streets with looters in some areas.
I'm physically fine but mentally,
emotionally and spiritually, I am exhausted.
Today [Wednesday], the Governor has called
for a day of prayer for the people affected by
the hurricane. I ask that you join us by taking a
moment today to send up a prayer, a positive
thought – or whatever suits you – for the
victims and for our recovery. It will take a very
long time to recover, but we will get there.
To my Chicago family, most of you
know I was planning to come up there for
vacation starting Friday. I was looking
forward to hanging out with friends, going to
Deneen and Gene's wedding, meeting

Jennifer's baby boy, and being at TUCC
Sunday morning. That is highly unlikely at this
point. I have to be here to work and to help

Happy Labor Day!
While we party and enjoy ourselves
this Labor Day weekend, there are thousands
suffering in the world around us. In Iraq, the
number of Americans dead rapidly approaches
1900. The number of Iraqi civilians dead is
over 100,000. Happy Labor Day!
In Darfur and Sudan, the genocide has
not stopped. Black women and children are
being raped and murdered. In the Congo,
black women are being raped and black
children are dying. Happy Labor Day!
In New Orleans, the dead have not
even been tabulated, much less recovered and

or buried. Forty-five million Americans have
no insurance and thousands of those devastated
in New Orleans and Mississippi are black, poor
and uninsured; yet, we go right on partying and
jamming "in the name of the Lord." Happy
Labor Day!
The African Festival in this city this
weekend will attract millions of vendors,
buyers, shoppers and consumers, artists,
entertainers and those seeking to celebrate one
last time before summer is over and school
reopens; and the death toll continues to rise all
around us. Happy Labor Day!
Ever since the Bush Administration
kidnapped Aristide – the "pro-poor"
democratically elected president of Haiti – and
installed their own "pro-business" puppet, the
devastation and corruption in Haiti continues to
escalate, while we go on partying, oblivious to
what is happening to the blacks under
genocidal attack right here in our hemisphere.
Happy Labor Day!
Congresswoman Maxine Waters,
however, sent us a sobering letter that I want to
share with you as you leave worship today to
enjoy this holiday with your loved ones. Read
it and think about it. Read it and wake up!

Congresswoman Waters Says That
Ambassador Foley Was Right About
The Interim Government Of Haiti
Today, Rep. Maxine Waters (CA-35)
released a statement in response to Ambassador

James B. Foley's comments regarding the
interim government of Haiti. The
Congresswoman's statement follows:
I commend Ambassador James B.
Foley for taking a courageous stand in support
of justice and the rule of law in Haiti prior to
his final departure as the United States
Ambassador to that tormented nation.
Ambassador Foley said the interim government
of Haiti tarnished the country's image by
releasing convicted killer and death squad
leader Louis-Jodel Chamblain from prison
while continuing to detain former Prime
Minister Yvon Neptune.
Time and time again, I have decried
the incompetence of the interim government of
Haiti, which continues to be supported by the
Bush Administration. Kidnappings, murder
and other crimes have become widespread in
Haiti since the interim government came to
power a year-and-a-half ago. Roads and
infrastructure have fallen into disrepair, and
public services have virtually disappeared.
The interim government has done
nothing to stem the growing violence in the
country, and it has done nothing to make
millions of dollars in promised aid from
international donors available to the Haitian
people. Just about the only thing the interim
government has done is jail hundreds of
political prisoners.
Yvon Neptune is one of these political
prisoners. He served as Haiti's prime minister
prior to the February 2004 coup d'etat, and he
is now the most prominent member of Lavalas,

the largest political party in Haiti. The interim
government arrested him over a year ago
without charges and continues to detain him
without a trial. Twenty-eight Members of
Congress called for his release in letters sent to
President Bush last May.
Another one of these political prisoners
is Father Gerard Jean-Juste, a widely-respected
Catholic priest. Prior to his arrest last month,
Father Jean-Juste operated a soup kitchen for
hungry children, one of the few social services
available in a country whose government has
abdicated its responsibilities.
Amnesty International declared him a
prisoner of conscience, and twenty-nine
Members of Congress signed a letter calling for
his release. Other prominent political prisoners
in Haiti include former Interior Minister
Jocelerme Privert and Haitian singer Anne
Auguste, both of whom have been detained
without a trial for over fifteen months.
There is a growing consensus that there
can be no free and fair elections in Haiti under
the violent conditions that exist today.
Nevertheless, the interim government is
determined to hold elections in November of
this year, despite rampant violence and the
continuing imprisonment of Lavalas party
leaders.
Under these circumstances, it is hard to
believe that the Haitian people would ever
accept the results of the elections. Suspicion is
already widespread that the interim
government's real motive in keeping Prime
Minister Neptune and Father Jean-Juste behind
bars is to prevent them from running for office.

The interim government's decision to
let death squad leader Louis-Jodel Chamblain
out of prison must be seen in light of the
upcoming elections. Chamblain's history of
organizing violence against political activists is
enough to make any potential candidate afraid
to run for office. Setting him free three months
before the elections could possibly further
endanger potential Lavalas candidates and lead
to incidents like the 1994 Raboteau massacre, a
brutal massacre in a low-income neighborhood,
for which Chamblain was later convicted.
We may never know why James B.
Foley left his post as the Ambassador to Haiti.
We may hope he decided that he could not in
good conscience continue to stand by while the
interim government imprisons potential
candidates and allows violent criminals to
control the countryside. Perhaps he grew tired
of operating an embassy with a skeleton staff
after other personnel returned to the United
States to escape the escalating violence.
What we do know is that there can
never be free and fair elections in Haiti as long
as thugs and killers are allowed to roam free
and innocent priests and politicians remain
behind bars.

Stewardship
LEAVES
Leaves come in a wide variety of shapes.
Even if you don’t recognize which trees
they are from, you wouldn’t mistake an
oak leaf for a pine needle or a weeping
willow leaf for one from a maple. There
are even differences among leaves in
different types of the same tree. Yet,
despite all their differences, all leaves have
the same purpose: to make food for the
tree using water, light and carbon dioxide.
Without all three of these things, the tree
cannot grow or even live.
A church is like a tree, and its members
are like leaves. Without their constant
donations of time, talent and treasure, the
church will soon suffer and may not
survive. However, with careful
stewardship, the church will flourish and a
healthy church, like a healthy tree, will
benefit others. It can be a source of food,
shelter and inspiration too. Remember this
as you decide how you can provide your
time, talent and resources to make the
“tree” flourish.

Amani Care Program
Amani is a Ki-Swahili word, the essence of
which means Healing, Wholeness and Peace
with God, both in this world as well as in our
eternal home with God.
As the need for services continues to increase,
the Amani Volunteer Hospice Care Program
and the Amani Care Program are looking for
dedicated and committed individuals who are
willing to share their gifts of service with the
chronically, seriously and terminally ill. If you
are interested in volunteering your services, we
are offering a two-weekend training session
beginning Friday, September 3rd, 5:30 - 9:00
