Unit Overview: Students are working at basic reading skills and understanding the use of
text features in finding specific information.

Date/Time frame of Lesson: Students will have 2 class periods (each approximately 45
minutes) to complete both research and the finished product.

Content Area Standards/Goals (Common Core):
RI.1.1. Ask and answer questions about key details in a text.
RF.1.1. Demonstrate understanding of the organization and basic features of print.

AASL Standards and Indicators:
1.2.2 Demonstrate confidence and self-direction be making independent choices in the
selection of resources and information.
3.1.4 Use technology and other information tools to organize and display knowledge and
understanding in ways that others can view, use, and assess.

Objectives:
Research an assigned biome and create an electronic diorama using Pixie to visually
display the information.

Give an overview and tutorial of PebbleGo and Pixie
Create a rubric for expectations of the final product

Assessment Overview:
Classroom teacher will assess posters using criteria chosen by media specialist
and agreed upon by teacher

Students with difficulties will be paired with other students at teacher discretion.

Procedures:
Day 1:
1. Warm-up (full class): Orally review classroom background: What is a biome?
2. Full class: LMS shows students how to find their assigned biome in PebbleGo,
how to navigate within an article, and how to use the read-to feature
3. Full class: LMS shows note-taking sheet and does sample notetaking with class
4. Individual/Pair student work: teacher and LMS circulate to assist
5. Closure (full class): Students volunteer information they found interesting about
their biome
Day 2:
1. Warm-up (full class): Orally review research from last class. Discuss student
background knowledge of Pixie.
2. Full class: LMS shows students how to find and open Pixie
3. Full class: LMS shows how to create a background and draw a ground
4. Individual/Pair student work: teacher and LMS circulate to assist
5. Full class: LMS shows how to use stickers (both browsing and search) to find
plants for their biomes.
6. Individual/Pair student work: teacher and LMS circulate to assist
7. Full class: LMS shows how to use stickers (both browsing and search) to find
animals for their biomes.
8. Individual/Pair student work: teacher and LMS circulate to assist
9. Full class: LMS shows how to use text to title their pictures and add their names.
10. Individual/Pair student work: teacher and LMS circulate to assist
11. Closure (full class): Students volunteer information they found interesting about
their project
