1. Title of the Abstract

Autonomous Virtual Classroom System for Schools in Villages and
Underdeveloped Regions for Standardized Education.

2. Theme / Application Area

Smart Solutions for Social Cause (Education)

3. Abstract
.
This is 21
st
century but still there are places in India where standard
education is not available. The fate of Indian villagers education is
dependent on the person who is controlling the schools. Sometimes he is
a principal and in the worst case he is an individual who is not even well
educated. So, to solve this, an education system which is self-sufficient
with minimal assistance can be obvious. The Autonomous Virtual
Classroom System comprises of the basic requirements to solve this
inevitable problem of rural schooling. This system is designed to be easily
installed and operated without human interferences.

For delivering the courses, there is an A/V output system, where video is
delivered to the medium sized screen via the low powered projector. The
standard video lectures from eminent faculties from the nation for different
subjects and levels and different languages is stored in the memory so as
to make every classroom in villages the same. This eliminates the scarcity
of good teachers in rural India. There is a remote server from which all
these classrooms are connected centrally. The virtual classroom has a
student record database system, where the daily record of students is
recorded.

The basic operations of a modern school are done by this system too. The
attendance of the technician and the students on daily basis is done by bio
scans such as fingerprint in this case. This also facilitates the ease of
educating more students and eliminating the root cause problems for
absence of the students. If a student is absent regularly for few days then,
the system can send notification to the technician who can check the
situation which can be anything from financial or health reasons and can
be solved by the gram panchayats and other authorities so that the
student can continue the studies.

There is a central processing unit based on Intel atom processor, with all
the other components. There is a A/V output. Apart from this, there is a
gsm module and a remote connection unit. Biometric figure print scanner
and some basic I/O units are embedded. The system is programmed to be
autonomous in operation so as to minimize human interference and so as
to eliminate mistakes and punctuality is maintained.

4. What do you think is innovative or novel about your project? You may
highlight the merits of your project, and specific relevance in the Indian
context, if any.

This project can bridge the gap between the rural education system and
the modern education qualities without much effort in terms of human
resource and infrastructure but still delivering the best education. By
implementing such systems, the students of rural India can also be taught
with the best faculties from the world and our nation.

One of the most troublesome tasks for the human resource department of
the states is to recruit good teachers in the rural and remote locations.
Which results in recruitment of a teacher who dont have the right
education, right methodology to teach and also total control of the school
goes into his/her hands, which sometimes results in misuse of power and
control.

Also, since this system is autonomous and every operation is timed one,
punctuality is maintained which is absent now-a-days in rural schools. The
other advantage of such a system is to eliminate the monopoly of single
administrator of the schools. Also the root causes for schools to become
infamous among the students will be eliminated to further extent. And due
to the recorded databases, the analysis of different methodologies,
problems resulting in absence of students whether due to diseases, or
due to family problems or else can be eliminated by focusing on those
problems on mass.

5. What are the existing solutions available in market today (provide specific
URLs)
.
Currently no such complete solutions are available in the market today.
But few attempts are there. But either they are for online classrooms or
they are just assistive to the regular classrooms.

For example, the WizIQ.com offers virtual classrooms for live online
classes.

url: http://www.wiziq.com/Virtual_Classroom.aspx

But its for modern cities who have regular access to computers, laptops
and internet connectivity. And its main purpose is to assist the regular
classes.

6. What is the work done so far? Please provide specific results/prototype
you have obtained/done till now.

Firstly, system identification, understanding the process and identification
of the relationship between input and output, the requirement definition,
determination of the needs the product has to meet, taking into account
the possibly conflicting (technical, functional and non-functional) and deep
research and brainstorming was done.

System specification and the functional designing were done with minor
changes during the further steps. Furthermore, the components and sub
processes were defined for the system to work as per the design. Detailed
design, resulting in a concrete structure of all modules from which the
system must be made was done.

Input and Output definitions for particular inputs, what the output of the
system will be was done. Based on the above points, available
technologies were reviewed and selection of which devices will fulfill all the
requirements while balancing efficiency, cost, and time-to-market was
done. Integration of the components was designed. Video output is under
development.

7. When did you start your project & what is your plan for completion?

This project was started in April this year and plans are to complete this
project by the mid of November this year.

8. Please provide in brief, any additional information for consideration of your
project to next level?
(You may include your specific expertise, skill set, past innovation etc)

This project is vital for a educated tomorrow. The rural population of India
is a major area to be covered. And such a system can assist a better
growth opportunities in India and abroad too. This system can be installed
in remote locations too with solar powers and other renewable power
sources where there is no electricity. This will make sustainable
development possible.

I am an entrepreneur. By education a designer and by profession a web
developer and designer. I have been interested in hobby electronics from
my college days. And being active in the social community, this project
gains my ultimate interest in this field.
