REPORT ON PIAGETS THEORY

The entire student of 1 PISMP TESL was compulsory to do our School Based
Experience (SBE) for one week at any school that we choose. During SBE, we have
to complete our assignment that it is required us to carry out Piagets Theory as to
determined the cognitive level of the student in school. We have chosen different
stage of age. I choose the student from standard six (12 years old) to carry out this
activity. Below is the task that has been carried out by 12 years old student.
Task carried out for the 12 years old student:
Task 1: conservation of mass
1. Two identical balls of plasticine are shown to the student. For first attempt, the
student was asked whether the mass of the plasticine is the same.
2. For the second attempt, the experimenter changes the shape of one of the
balls and asks the student whether both plasticines still contain the mass
amount or not.

Task 2: conservation of number
1. Two identical rows of plasticine are shown to the student. For first attempt, the
student was asked whether the row has the equal number of plasticines.
2. For the second attempt, the experimenter has further the position of the
plasticine and asks the student which row of plasticine has same number or
not.

Task 3: conservation of liquid
1. Two identical polistrene cups are presented to the student. The student was
asked whether both polistrene cups have the same amount of liquid.
2. Then, the water from one of the polistrene cups has been poured into another
size of cup. The student was asked which liquid has higher amount and
whether they have the same amount of liquid.

Task 4: Conservation of length
1. Two identical pen were arranged with both have same length.
2. Then, the experimenter moved one of the pens to the right. The student was
asked whether the length of both pen are same or not.

Task 5: conservation of weight
1. The two identical plasticines were weighed on the scale with both have same
weight
2. Then, the experimenter changes the shape of one of the plasticines into flat.
Without placing them back on the scale, the student was asked which both
plasticines have same weight or not.

After five conservation tasks on piaget had been carried out on the student, I
observed and analyzed the result of these experiments. The result as shown in the
table below:
Stage of cognitive
level of student
Task Result of the experiment

Formal Operational
Stage(11 Years Old
and above)

Task 1
The experimenter make two plasticines
become round and both have same size.
At first, the student stated that both
plasticine have equal size. Then, after the
experimenter change the size of the
plasticine into oval, he said that the
plasticine also have equal size than
before. The answered is correct.

Task 2
The experimenter took several plasticines
and arranged it in two rows which have
same number of plasticines. At first, the
student said that both rows of plasticine
have same number. After that, the length
of the plasticine rows have been
changed, and he also said that both row
have same number of plasticines. The
student answered is right.

Task 3
For the identical polistrene cups, the
experimenter filled same amount of liquid
in both cups. Then, the student said that
the amount of liquids is same. After that,
a liquid from one of the cups has been
poured into another different size of cups;
the student said that the amount of liquid
from taller cup has same amount of liquid
in different size of cup. The answered is
correct.

Task 4 The experimenter arranged two identical
pens in front of the student with same
length. At first, the student said that both
pens have same length. Then, the
experimenter moved one of the pens to
the right. The student said the same
answer that both identical pens have
same length.

Task 5
The experimenter weighed the two
identical plasticines on the scale and both
have same weight. Then, the student said
that both have same weight. The
experimenter changed the shape of one
of the plasticines into flat. The student
said that both also have same weight.

CONCLUSION
Based on the three experiments that have been conducted, we can see the cognitive
level of a standard six student which is 12 years old. The cognitive level of this
student is move beyond concrete operational level because he can answer all the
questions correctly and he also can give the reason of the experiment. At the level
of formal operation, the student can examine abstract problems systematically to
generate different possibilities for a given situation and generalize the result. The
student at this stage also can make hypothesis and can reason inductively and
deductively. So that, the student is being able to think logically and critically on the
experiments conducted and also to understand the form or structure of a
mathematical problem.
In Piagets Theory, it showed four stages that the children must undergo in their life
as a children. The four stages that stated in Piagets Theory are sensorimotor stage
(from birth-2 years), preoperational stage (2-7 years), concrete operational stage (7-
11 years) and formal operational stage (11 years and above). All these stages have
their own characteristics that we can detect of their cognitive level. But, as their
ages and their concentration increases, their cognitive level also will be increased
and they will be able to think logically and critically.
From the analysis of the findings, the Piagets Theory is correct which children from
age 11 years and above which their cognitive level is more think abstractly,
systematically an can make hypothesis to solve the problems. They are not just
observing what the things that they see but they can give reason why the answer
must be like that.

REFLECTION
First of all, thank you to the Almighty for His consent; I finally finished this
coursework assignment successfully. Thank you to my lecturer, Madam Wan
Faridah for all her guidelines and useful information for this assignment. I also want
to thank my members of my group for their cooperation and helps in finishing the
assignment.
Before we did this assignment, we have learnt about Piagets Theory in our class.
Our lecturer gives some ideas what this theory is talking about. We are also required
to find any information on Piagets Theory and also the cognitive level for child
development. At first, my group members and I have faced a few problems during
finishing the assignment. We actually did not understand enough what we need to do
and how to relate between the Piagets Theories with the cognitive level of the
student. After we asked many times to our lecturer, find more information at library
and asked other group in our class, finally we know how to do our assignment well.
My groups and I need to find 3 children and conduct at least 3 experiments to the
students during my School Based Experience (SBE). It was hard to find time spacing
because I was very busy during my time in school. Finally, I managed to find three
students in my school and conducted the experiments during the recess. I brought
the things that it needed in my experiment such as two identical cups, plasticines,
and the longer cup. In group, we have divided that which student that we need to
choose in our experiment. I choose the student from standard six which is 12 years
old.
From the assignment, I understand better about Piagets Theory and I can prove
whether the theory is correct or incorrect. The results have been shown in my
analysis of assignment. I also learned about the development of children based on
their observation and their logically thinking. Every age has different cognitive level
and usually children 11 years old and above can think critically and logically what
they see in front of them. They do not easily to make assumption on their
observation as they know how to solve the answer well. Besides, this knowledge is
very useful to us as we can detect easily the cognitive level of our students in
classroom.
I also get to cooperate and collaborate with children to undergo the experiments. The
children give full cooperation with me and from their good cooperation, I managed to
finish and make analysis on the experiments early, and it makes my work becomes
easy. Furthermore, I also have a good cooperation with my friends and lecturer. My
friends and I exchange our references and collaborate together to finish and produce
an excellent assignment. Lecturer also gives good cooperation with us and gives us
a lot of guidelines so that there will be no problem for us in the assignment.
Lastly, I hope that from the knowledge that I gained when finishing the assignment
will be used wisely and be used for another assignment with an excellent mark.
