Bullying is unwanted, aggressive behavior among
school aged children that involves a real or perceived
power balance. The behavior is repeated, or has the
potential to be repeated over time. Both kids who
are bullied and who bully others may have serious,
lasting problems.
In order to be considered bullying, the behavior
must be aggressive and include:
An imbalance of Power; Kids who bully use
their power - such as physical strength, access to
embarrassing information, or popularity - to control
or harm others. Power imbalances can change over
time and in different situations, even if they involve
the same people.
Repetition: Bullying behaviors happen more than
once or have the potential to happen more than once.
Bullying includes actions such as making threats,
spreading rumors, attacking someone physically or
verbally, and excluding someone from a group on
purpose.
There are 3 Types of Bullying - Verbal, Social and
Physical.
Verbal is saying or writing mean things. It includes
teasing, name-calling, inappropriate sexual comments,
taunting and threatening to cause harm.
Social involves hurting someones reputation
or relationships. It includes leaving someone out
on purpose, telling other children not to be friends
with someone, spreading rumors about someone,
embarrassing someone in public.
Physical involves hurting a persons body or
possessions. Hitting, kicking, pinching, spitting,
tripping or pushing, taking or breaking someones
things, making mean or rude hand gestures - all
are example of physical bullying.
Bullying can occur during or after school hours.
While most reported bullying happens in the school
building, a signicant percentage also happens in
places like on the playground or on the bus. It can
also happen traveling to and from school, in the
youths neighborhood, or on the Internet.
What You Can Do About It:
1. React in a safe way when you witness bullying
or cruelty - Dont join in, if you feel safe tell the bully
that this is not OK, report bullying and harassment
to an adult, comfort the victim.
2. Become a leader and change expectations -
If you realize you sometimes bully, change your
behavior-stop! Be a role model for others, be an
activist and strengthen your school & community,
work to improve how people treat each other, reach
out by including those regularly excluded in social
settings.
4. Make bullying socially unacceptable - Many
people will change their bullying behavior if students
AND teachers make it clear its unacceptable &
immature, dont spread gossip about people, be kind
to others.
5. Use humor - Students who are naturally witty
can be very successful in using humor to diffuse a
bullying situation, but not everyone will be able to
use this strategy. It is offsetting to the one doing the
bullying, because they are no longer the center of
attention, the one with the Power.
