General Guidelines on Installation of
Pressure Instruments

The response of pressure measurement is affected by ID as well as
total length of impulse pipe. The ID and length of impulse pipe must
be carefully decided, especially for low pressure measurement to
avoid slow response.

Suitable snubber (pulsation damper) or Capacity Tank or Needle Valve
shall be used to protect against surges or pulsation, which should not
be permitted to enter into the pressure sensing or measuring device.
Normally, above compressors, etc. Pulsating pressure in a pressure
measurement should be avoided because the constant movement of
pointer or any moving parts will produce an unreliable signal or
indication and the constant motion will cause excessive wear and loss
of calibration or even rupture of pressure sensing element.

When corrosive medium is to be measured special non-corrosive
elements or tubing or liquid seal is used, in which gauge and
connecting line shall be installed and any capsule type gauge may be
used. However, for Ammonia gas or liquid. Alloy steel impulse pipe
can be directly used since steel materials are not appreciably corroded
by ammonia.

The viscous fluid which solidifies in ambient temperature must be
separated from the sensing elements. Suitable seal pot shall be used
as shown in the fig. Suitable sealing fluid is filled in the seal pot. The
pressure in the viscous medium is transmitted through the sealing
fluid. The choice of sealing fluid is based on the following:

a) Resistance to the chemical combination with viscous fluid.

b) Resistance to physical combination with viscous fluid such as
vaporization or dissolving.

c) The specific gravity which can keep the sealing liquid separate
from viscous fluid under all existing temperatures. Normally
heavy oil glycerine is used for the sealing pot.

Venting facility shall be provided for any pressure measuring
instruments line either with tee & plug or 2 valve manifold. The
trapped air at any point of instruments line may cause serious error.

CORRECTION FOR GAUGE LOCATION

Pressure instruments located below the trapping points will indicate
higher than the desired pressure due to pressure created by the
column of liquid between instrument and tapping points. The
correction is negative and is equal to hd is difference in height and
d is density.

For instruments mounted above tapping point, similar correction is
required, but the correction must be added in the column of liquid,
that creates a pressure which oppose the desired pressure. Without
any correction the instruments will give a low reading.
