Source 1: Primary

The above source is an advertisement from a North Carolina newspaper in 1832 and therefore a primary
source. This source shows that many slaves did run away from their masters and that their masters paid
good money for their capture. It also confirms that many slaves lost their real name and had anglicised
names instead.

Source 2: Primary

This is a primary source as it is a sketch done by a sketch artist for a British newspaper that illustrates a slave
market in Virginia in 1896. This shows how slaves were treated as objects or property that could be sold or
traded by other people usually rich white landowners. This was due to the fact that the white Americans did
not see them as human let alone their equal.

Source 3: Secondary

This is a secondary source as it is an extract from a book, The Heroic Slave written by Frederick Douglas, a
prominent black social reformer and writer. This source perfectly describes how difficult life was for the
slaves as they had to work from dawn to dusk. It also outlines how cruel slave masters could be with their
punishments.

Source 4: Primary

This article from a 1963 College newspaper is a primary source as it is a first-hand account of the events that
occurred in the South. It reveals how hard it was to be a civil rights worker and how vulnerable African
American women and men were in the South. The rape, murders and other violent attacks on blacks paint a
grim picture of the Southern states.

Source 5: Secondary

This source is a colour coded map of the United States of America from the 1960s made by a blogger in 2008
and hence its secondary source. Its easy to see that the Southern states were predominantly in favour of
segregation whilst the Northern states were against segregation. This also explains why African Americans
were treated worse in Southern states compared to the Northern states.

The above source is secondary source as it is an article in 2009 on the Smithsonian Magazine website about
the legacy of the Freedom Riders. Freedom Riders were civil rights activists who rode interstate buses into
the segregated southern United States in 1961. Their actions further helped the civil rights
