0.1 Introduction
0.2 What is Unsung Hero
The meaning of an unsung hero is that a person's good deeds or abilities
have gone unrecognized or haven't received adequate praise. The term
originates from the fact that people sometimes write songs to honor people
of special significance. This was particularly common when the oral tradition
was strong and people could not read or write. If a person is unsung, it means
he hasn't received his deserved honor yet.

The Success Stories

THE FOUNDING OF YAYASAN SALAM Malaysia is based on a very simple
philosophy: that people everywhere are entitled to live in an environment
that is just and equitable, and pursue a life of dignity and fulfillment. The goal
of civil society is to ensure that people are helped to lead better lives.
Yayasan Salam regards volunteer work as a meaningful way to bring about
change. Volunteer work helps to build strong communities by cultivating an
ethic of sharing, helping and caring. Through Yayasan Salam, Malaysians
now have the opportunity to contribute towards the building of civil society
when they serve as volunteers at home and overseas.
SALAM volunteers work with people and communities in need, sharing with
them their knowledge and skills, and building capabilities. We believe many
Malaysians, especially youths, would like to contribute to this effort. Those
who become SALAM volunteers will be placed to work with requesting
organisations at home and abroad.
The launching of Yayasan Salam is significant in one other respect. For many
years Malaysia has been a recipient of aid and assistance from many
developed countries. This has contributed in no small measure to our
development and progress as a nation. Our success of recent times has
given us the confidence and reinforced our commitment to reach out and
share our knowledge and expertise with others, within the limits of our
resources and capabilities. In this context, the formation of a national
volunteer corps and the sending of volunteers across borders is an expression
of a new dimension in our nationhood.

Mission Statement
WE, VOLUNTEERS OF SALAM, dedicated to achieving the goals of a civil
society where every individual will have the opportunity to lead a life of
dignity and fulfillment, hereby pledge:
To uphold and practice the spirit of volunteerism To share knowledge and
experience with sincerity and humility To respect the traditions and cultures of
other communities To foster friendship and solidarity among all peoples
The formation of Yayasan Salam underscores our belief that people must
make a deliberate effort to reach out to other people to help build a better
world. Our mission is to give expression to this objective through volunteer
effort. Let us all join hands and together seek to make a meaningful
difference.

5 Towering Personality Qualities
Concern
It is about having an alternative to foster homes and doing away with
children in institutional homes. Its about more care, happier children and a
safe space because we have less children to adult ratio and better staff. Its
about creating homes because these children cannot go home or have no
home. Worse, if this home is shut, chances are these children will end up in
the very places we are trying to avoid- back to their abusive homes, family
and circumstances or * shudder * they enter the system and end up in
government welfare homes- homes that are overcrowded, short of staff and
are not as child friendly as we are.

Helping
The children sometimes range in age from newborn till 12 year olds. It is
meant as a safe space for children in the worst situations- trafficked children,
children who are abused, and in need of protection by the courts.
Sometimes the mother leaves all her children at the center so she can buy
time to get herself sorted, get a job, get back on her feet, and once stable,
shell take the children back. We try hard to provide some semblance of
normalcy for the children or as close to a healthy proper home as possible.
The children do homework when they come home from school, play with the
children in the neighbourhood and the little ones go for walks and play on
the swings in the evenings. So you see, we need this home. The welfare
department sends children here; people in distress send their children here.
We are firm we do not take more than 15 children at any one time.
Children displaced temporarily and in distress must have an environment that
is as close to a home as possible. So the children eat together, do homework
together,; the older children help staff take care of the younger children, the
older children attend school nearby and the younger kids have teachers and
playtime at home.

Caring
An effective volunteer is caring, understanding, nonjudgmental and has a
strong ability to empathize with homeless, handicap people from all walks of
life. Volunteer in Yayasan Salam are basically deal with them on a daily basis,
and they need to be able to show them that they truly care about their
situations. Being sympathetic about the handicap people and homeless
experience can go a long way towards improving care. Sometimes, an
empathetic volunteer is all homeless, handicap people have to look forward
to. At the same time, they need to be able to control their own emotions.
They constantly deal with stressful situations including emergencies, traumatic
events and tragic illnesses. To be able to successfully carry out their duties,
they must be able to remain calm and think clearly under these
circumstances.

Communication Skills
Solid communication skills are a basic foundation for any career. But for
volunteer, its one of the most important aspects of the job. They have to be
able to communicate with the homeless, handicap people. They must also
listen carefully to their needs. They are able to follow directions without a
problem and easily communicate with them. A truly volunteer advocates for
their needs. Effective communication skills create a high level of satisfaction
while preventing misunderstanding. One of the most needed things in
Yayasan Salam is medicine such as fever medicine for children, cough
mixture, cool fever and things like soap, detergent, shampoo, foods like
biscuits, sugar, tea and so on.

Responsible
This centre was previously run by Yayasan Salam but effective 1st March 2011
they are officially out from Yayasan Nur Salam and created their own
foundation registered Yayasan Chow Kit. There are 3 centres altogether. All 3
is under different management or coordinator. Pusat Aktiviti Kanak-Kanak
(PAKK) receives children aged 5-12 years old. Primary school age. Rumah
Baitul Amal is for babies upto 4 years and another activity centre for
teenager 13 and above called Krash Pad. We were then taken to the 2nd
floor of PAKK which is the hostel and the activity area of PAKK. We were
greeted by all the children queing up to shake our hands actually, they kissed
our hands.. I'm touched! We were informed that they used to have a few
double decks sponsored by IKEA but the children refused to sleep on the bed
and on a few occassion one of them fell from the top deck when they finally
decided to dismantle the beds and let the children sleep on the floor with
comforter. The activity area is a wide air conditioned area with a shelf and a
table on the side and a 2 door refrigerator. At night, the activity area
becomes the sleeping area for the boys. They are sharing 1 bathroom and
they also have a washing machine. We were shown to the large build-in
cupboard sponsored by some individual which came 2-3 weeks ago. They
have a proper place to keep the children's clothes and comforter. Everything
seems to be proper and comfortable here.

5 Lessons Learnt

Question 1:
What do you think if all people surround us to implement the same ways in
order to save the humanity like what your organization do?

For me, I think there are numerous of advantages if all the local people and
the crowded implement the same ways with what our organization does
which is Yayasan Salam implement for all this time. There are lack of
organizations in Malaysia to implement the project who gives the homeless
feed, contributing, helping and many more. I think that our environment in
the entire places will be safety and conducive because all the people are
starting to love the homeless, handicap people and so on.

Question 2:
Do you think everybody should get their second chance in life in order to
improve their life?

Yes, for me everybody should get their second chance, third time and
perhaps fourth time in order to improve and to be successful in life. I believe
that everybody wants a chance to improve their life but unfortunately to
face the obstacles that always existed in this life. After that, our organization is
willing to give a hand to those homeless people, handicap, drugs people
and to help these people to improve their life.

Question 3
Sure in this life we have an idol and inspiration, could you share with us who is
your idol and inspiration to developed this organization?

Yes, there is several person who give me a lot of inspirations in order to fight
and trying to help, contributes to give the homeless feed. Firstly, the person
who gave me inspiration is my sister, she had a high of motivation and can
influence people in order to improve their life. For me, my sister plays her role
model to motivate and contributes with handicap people and homeless to
stay alongside with her and trying to achieve a something good and satisfied
in this life. Secondly is my friends, I saw many of my friends who never give up
to achieve what their want and trying their best ways to improve and I feel
relieve because these people stay closed with me.

Question 4:
The justice and independence is an honourable and clean in humanity, So
what do you think the best ways to solve maintaining this situation?

Justice and independence is a concept of moral rightness based on ethics,
rationally, law, natural, religion, fairness. Justice and independence takes into
account the inalienable and inborn rights of all human beings and citizen.
The right of people and individuals to equal protection before the law, but
the homeless is definitely too far from this based on their situation. So, I think
there are several ways to solve and maintaining these problem.
Firstly, the government side must play a role model in order to solve this
matter, Government side have to launching their slogan and campaign to
help these target homeless people, handicap. So that, many advantages will
be achieve by the taking an action from the government to contributes and
help these people.
Secondly, the Ngos side also have to taking their action to solve this problem
too. This is because in Malaysia there is a lot of organization that can
implement their ways and method in order to contribute same goes what our
organizations implement.
Thirdly, the local people also play their role model too. The local people must
give their help to these people too and not to depend to government and
Ngos side to solve this matter.

Question 5:
What is your hope to Yayasan Salam based on caring, integrities, humanity,
helping, and loving.

I hope that, local people in Malaysia learn to accept the existed of Yayasan
Salam organization slowly. This is because that Yayasan Salam is one of the
organizations who help and give feed to the homeless, handicap people
and many more. Yayasan Salam will not stop to help these people and will
trying to achieve a best result in order to convince them that Yayasan Salam
is willing to contributed in this matter. I strongly believe that Yayasan Salam
will become a maintaining organization to help and solve this matter in
Malaysia.
