What is Ecology?
Ecology: from the greek word oikos for house
-is the study of the abundance and distribution of organisms.
Economy: the arrangement or mode of operation of something.
The interrelations between origins
Classical sense of how nature works
Influences include both Abiotic (geography, climate,) and Biotic(interactions
with other organisms from the same spiceies or from other spicies)
components.
Ecology is the search for answers about how our life on earths works.
The Hierarchy of biological systems
Biosphere
Ecosystem
Community

Levels of Organisms
Organisms
Populations
-Orgnaisms of the same spiecies interacting with each other
Guilds
-Different species that utilize resources in essentially the same way in the
same habitat
-Trphic levels
Communities
-Populations of diff species living and interacting together; Boundaires are
often not discreet (may have multiple communities)
Ecosystems
-Communities of organisms and their surrounding
Biosphere
-The sum total of all ecosystems including all enviroments
-linked through movement, air and organisms

Sub-divison of ecology
-Behavioral ecology: how do they behave? Affect their ability to survive and
reproduce.
-Physiological Ecology: the study of how physical factors; temp seasonality
etc.
Populations ecology: how groups of individuals grow and exchange with
other individuals
Community ecology: How populations from different species interact to
mutally affect each populations growth and survival. Which are gonna be
dominant or subordanent
Ecosystem ecology:
The flow of energy and matter in the large-scale living systems.
Landscape ecology: Spacial process, through satellite senors
How does the spatials distribution in the everglades with the trees
Global ecology: why are there hot spots depending on organisms that live
there?

Ecology is a Science
-Employs the scientific method
-both theory and data
-experiments, hypothesizes
Obsercvation/DescriptionHypothesis Formation
Testing/Experimentation
Lastly, Evaluated, and conclude with a theory, but can change with time
