Important information for admission into various Undergraduate and Post-Graduate
Degree Programmes of Assam Womens University for the Academic Session 2014-15



A. IMPORTANT DATES
The following is the schedule of admission for the year 2014-15

B. INSTRUCTION FOR THE CANDIDATES
1) The candidates are required to submit the filled in application form within the last date of submission. Application
form can be downloaded from the official website of the University http://www.aau.ac.in/awu
2) No separate call letters will be issued to the candidates for appearing in the interview. The list of eligible candidates
will be uploaded in the University website http://www.aau.ac.in/awu on August 29, 2014 for information.
3) Candidates, if selected, shall have to take admission immediately after the interview on payment of necessary fees
as given in the Information Bulletin. A candidate failing to take admission on the day shall forfeit the seat.
4) Failure to report to the Selection Committee as per time schedule shall have no claim for the seats.
5) Appearing for interview does not guarantee right to admission in the programme. Selection Committee reserves the
right to accept or reject a candidate.
6) In case the seats are exhausted before all the candidates appear for interview, the University will not be
responsible for non-availability of seats.
7) No relaxation on the above is allowed under any circumstances.



1. THE UNIVERSITY
Established in the year 2013 through an act of Govt. of Assam, Assam Womens University is the first institution of its kind in
the state of Assam.
The main objectives of the university are:
a) to provide for facilities and offer opportunities to women for education in applied science, arts, technology, industry,
commerce, management and social science by instruction, training, research, development and extension and by such
other means as the University may deem fit;
b) to promote research in applied science and arts, technology, industry, commerce, management and social science
for the advancement of knowledge and for the betterment of the society particularly with focus on women's perspective;
c) to devise and implement programmes of education for women in applied science, arts, technology, industry,
commerce, management and social science that are relevant to the changing socioeconomic needs of society, in terms
of breadth of diversity and depth of specialization;
d) to serve as a center for fostering co-operation and exchange of ideas between the academic and research
community on the one hand and industry on the other;
e) organize exchange programme with other institutions of repute into India and abroad with a view to keeping abreast
of the latest development areas of teaching and research.

The mission of the University is to provide a level playing ground for the women of Assam with respect to accessing higher
education for promoting their knowledge, competitiveness and skills so as to make them capable citizens to fill up the women
talent gap in different spheres of societal, scientific, technological and other areas.

The ultimate goal of the University is to produce 21st century women knowledge and think tanks to effectively carry forward the
women centric opportunities in the state of Assam and to become a matching partner in national and global development of the
women centric activities.

J orhat, Assam

3. THE UNIVERSITY CAMPUS
The permanent campus of the University shall come up within a span of 2-3 years. Meanwhile the educational/training activities
are being started from its temporary campus at Rowriah, J orhat. which is 6 km away from J orhat Town and 1 Km from the
Airport. The University can be reached easily from Guwahati, the capital of Assam, by bus/train/air.
4. COURSES
4.1 The University shall initially confine itself to offering B.A/B.Sc courses in some selected subjects as well as few diploma and
certificate courses. As soon as the permanent campus is ready, it will take up Masters and Ph.D courses and other advanced
training courses.
4.2 Intake capacity for degree programmes in all the schools shall be as follows:
Undergraduate degree programmes: 20 seats each
Post-Graduate degree programmes: 10 seats each

6. PROPOSED AREA OF DIPLOMA AND CERTIFICATE COURSES
Diploma and certificate courses in the following areas shall be offered after 6 months:
6.1 Diploma courses (Duration : 6 Months - 1 Year)
6.1.1 Library and information Science
6.1.2 Mass Communication and J ournalism
6.1.3 Fashion and Interior Designing
6.1.4 J ewellery Designing
6.1.5 Computer Hardware and Software Management.
6.1.6 Travel and Tourism Management
6.2 Certificate courses (Duration: 3 - 6 Months)
6.2.1 Textile and Fashion Designing
6.2.2 Web Designing including Multimedia Production
6.2.3 Communicative English and Soft Skill Development.
6.2.4 Dying and Printing
6.2.5 Lab Technicians
6.2.6 Event Management and Institutional House Keeping

7. ELIGIBILITY
7. 1. Eligibility for Undergraduate and Post-Graduate Degree Programmes
7.1.1 Only female candidates are eligible for admission
7.1.2 Admission will be restricted to domicile of Assam only
7.1.3 Age: A candidate for undergraduate degree programme shall be at least 17 years of age as on 01-09-2014 (i.e
must have been born before 01-09-1997).
7.1.4 Minimum marks:
Undergraduate Degree programme: A candidate must secure 45 per cent marks in aggregate at 10+2 level. The
minimum marks in aggregate is relaxable up to 35 per cent in case of SC/ST/DAC students
Post-Graduate Degree programme: A candidate must secure 45 per cent marks both in major subjects and aggregate.
Pass course/Non-major candidate should secure minimum 50 per cent in subject applied for and 45 per cent in
aggregate.

8. ADMISSION
8.1. How to apply
Applicants should read the Information Bulletin carefully before filling up the application form.
a) Obtaining Information Bulletin and application Form
Information Bulletin along with the Application Form for different degree programmes can be downloaded from the
University website www.aau.ac.in/awu.
b) Submission of Application Form
Application duly filled in and completed in all respects must reach the Registrar, Assam Womens University, C/O Assam
Agricultural University, J orhat 785013, Assam on or before the last date specified for the purpose. An amount of application fee
of Rs 250.00 (Rupees two hundred fifty) only should be directly deposited to the University Bank Account no. 33955259192,
State Bank of India, payable at J orhat. Copy of the bank receipt should be submitted along with the application form.

9. RESERVATION OF SEATS
Reservation will be as per Govt. of Assam norms. Certificates from the competent authorities against each of the reserve
categories must be enclosed along with the filled-in application form.

10. PERMANENT RESIDENCE CERTIFICATE
All candidates must submit the Permanent Residence Certificate issued by the competent authority (Deputy
Commissioner/District Magistrate/SDO Civil) of the Government .
11. PHYSICAL FITNESS
The candidate shall have to submit a duly filled-in prescribed format (Annexure I) along with the application form.
12. PAYMENT OF FEES
Subject to physical fitness of the candidates, being declared as such by the Medical Officer/ Medical Board, an eligible
candidate has to take admission on payment of prescribed fees immediately after selection. In case of failure to pay fees
at the time of admission, the seat allotted to the candidate will stand forfeited and the seat(s) thus vacated will be allotted to
the next candidate(s) in order of merit.

13. WAITING LIST
Vacancy arising out of any reasons shall be filled up by selection of wait-listed candidates within 15 days from the date of
admission

14. LIBRARY
Text and reference books for the various degree programmes shall be made available in the library.

15. RESIDENCE
Hostel for 50 students across all schools shall be allotted based on merit. Other students shall have to arrange their own
accommodation till the permanent facility comes up.


16. TEACHING
16.1 The System
The course credit system shall be followed in the University. The medium of instruction shall be English.
16.2. Academic Year
The academic year of the University is from August to J uly. The academic year consists of two semesters.
16.3 Courses
During a semester, the students register themselves for a number of courses. A "Course" is a unit of instruction of a subject
matter under any discipline carrying a specific number of "Credit Hours"
16.4. Credit Hours
"Credit Hours" signify the quantum of work done corresponding to 1 hour of theory class or 2-3 hours of laboratory/field
practical every week during a semester in respect of a particular course.
16.5. Attendance
A student is to maintain a minimum of 75 per cent attendance separately for theory and practical in each course failing
which she shall be debarred from appearing in the End term examination.

17. EXAMINATION
There are two examinations in a semester, viz., Mid term examination and End term examination. Mid term examination is
conducted in the middle of the semester, whereas the End term and practical examinations (as applicable) are held at the
end of the semester as per Academic Calendar. Besides, a student has to appear in quizzes/tests and carryout class/ laboratory
assignments throughout the semester.
18. CLIMATE
The climate of the state is pleasant for most part of the year. The winter lasts for about five months viz., from October to
February. Though summer starts from March - April, the weather is quite pleasant. There is heavy rainfall during the months
of J uly and August.

19. DRESS CODE
The students should dress in College blazer during games, sports and other special occasions. Students are to use white
aprons during laboratory practical. For attending University functions and within the campus, every student is expected to be
modestly dressed.

20. DISCIPLINE
All students are to maintain perfect discipline and proper scholastic atmosphere during their stay at the University. On
admission, students must acquaint themselves with the University and hostel rules and regulations. Ragging is
completely banned in Assam Women's University. Any student found involved in ragging shall be liable to stern disciplinary
action as per the UGC Regulation on "Curbing the menace of ragging in higher educational institution, 2009".

21. STUDENTS' WELFARE
21.1 Sports, Recreation, Social Service
The University shall gradually provide facilities for games and sports, music, study circle, drama and other co-curricular
activities for overall personality development of the students admitted.
21.2. Medical facilities
The available facilities at the Assam Agricultural University, J orhat shall be shared.
21.3. Student's Magazine
There shall be provision of publishing a magazine to encourage creativity of the students. The students are to pay the
magazine fee at the beginning of each academic year.

22. REFUND OF CAUTION MONEY
Refund of caution money shall be made to a student after her release from the University. The claim of caution money shall not
be entertained beyond a period of one year from the date of release. Release of caution money shall be made against
application in prescribed form and production of release order. The caution money shall not be refunded if a student leaves the
college without prior permission and/or does not join and attend any class after admission.
