TITLE : THE COAGULATION AND PREVENTION OF COAGULATION OF LATEX
AIM : To study the effect of acid and alkali on latex. HYPOTHESIS : __________ causes latex to coagulate, whereas a ________ prevents latex from coagulating. VARIABLES: Constant variable : ______________________________ Manipulated variable : ___________________________ Responding variable : ____________________________ MATERIALS : Latex, ethanoic acid and ammonia solution. APPARATUS: Beakers, glass rods and droppers. PROCEDURE: 1. Pour 10cm3 of latex into three beakers and label the beakers as A, B and C. 2. Add a few drops of ethanoic acid into the latex in beaker A by using a dropper and stir. 3. Repeat step 2 by adding ammonia solution into beaker B. 4. Leave beaker C without adding anything. 5. Leave the three beakers for one day and observe the changes from time to time. 6. Record the observations in the following table.
OBSERVATION : Beaker Observation
A The latex _______________, becoming a white solid.
B The latex ____________________.
C The latex ___________ but takes a __________ time. The coagulation of latex becomes ______________.
DISCUSSION: (C4PI1) 1. What substance needs to be added to the latex so that it coagulates? ___________ 2. Explain the observation when the acid is added to the latex. The acid contains _____________ ions with ______________ charges. The negative charges on the rubber protein membrane are _________________. Rubber particles ____________ causing the protein membranes to _____________. The released rubber molecules _____________with one another. Latex _____________.
3. What substance can be used to prevent the coagulation of latex? ______________________ 4. Explain the observation when alkali (ammonia solution) is added to the latex. Ammonia solution contains ___________ ions with ______________ charges, which neutralize any acid produced by _____________ in the latex. 5. (a) Will the latex that is left aside coagulate after a few days? __________________ (b) Explain your answer in (a). Reaction of _______ in the latex produces __________ and this _________ causes the ______________ of latex.
6. Is hypothesis accepted or not? _______________________
CONCLUSION : __________causes coagulation of latex whereas _____________ prevents latex from coagulating.
