SUNDAY SCHOOL NEWS

Peace Lutheran Sunday School will begin on Sunday,
September 14th at 9:15 to 10:15 am. Our lessons this year will include: The
Lords Prayer, Jesus Is Born, Creation, Noahs Ark, Jonah and the Big Fish,
and Daniel and the Lions.

We are going to try something new this year as were having a very hard time
finding teachers. There are 24 weeks of lessons this year and we are looking
for people to commit to leading a class as a Guest Teacher one Sunday out
of the year. Im positive we can find 24 people to give ONE HOUR A YEAR
to share Gods word!

Our lessons are taught in a rotation manner with centers including Arts &
Crafts, Cooking, Games, and Movie Time. The same lesson is taught for 4
weeks in 4 different ways. All supplies are provided and lessons are
pre-planned for you. A copy of the lesson will be delivered to you.

After each rotation, we do a community service project. In November we
serve cake at coffee hour to our Veterans and collect food items for our
local Food Shelves. In February we bring Valentine cookies to the Barrett
Care Center & Rolling Hills Residence. In March we deliver muffins to Group
Homes and the homebound. Were looking for addition community service
opportunities and welcome any suggestions. Let us know if you have an idea
for us.

Once again our Sunday School students will be helping out at our church
services by handing out bulletins, collecting the offering, and ushering.
Please let Joyce know if youd like to help.

Thank you so much for any help you can give us. Our children are the future
of our congregation and your contribution will be greatly appreciated!!

Treasurers ReportThe May transactions for Lenten offerings were initially intended
to be split 3 ways to Someplace Safe, the Grant County and HK Food Shelves. There
was an oversight and the funds were only split two ways between the food shelves.
While this was a lovely contribution of over $600 per food shelf, we made note that if
there are other special offerings or resources made available, that we should honor our

discussion about things that we liked to see continue, things that we had
questions about why we do what we do, about the pros and cons of change.

Stewardship of the Good News
Why Lutheran? Its a question I dont think I hear
people asking enough, but one that I think matters
deeply. As Im preparing for youth from our
congregation to attend the National Youth
Gathering in Detroit this summer, I find myself
writing, thinking, and telling kids and their
families how incredible of an experience it will be
to gather with 35,000 other Lutheran Youth. But
that begs the questionswhat do we mean by
Lutheran, and why Lutheran? I certainly dont
have the definitive answer to that question, and the
very fact that there is not a single person on the
planet that can be the definitive authority on that
question (not even the Presiding Bishop of the
ELCA, Elizabeth Eaton) is a big part FOR ME,
why Im Lutheran.
As many of you may know, I didnt grow up
Lutheran. I didnt grow up any Church. I went
one step further than no church, to really growing
up anti-church after an experience of being asked
to leave a congregation at six years old. So being
Lutheran isnt something I inherited, or sometime
that was ever assumed on to me from any out-
side sources (except perhaps the God who called
be to be a part of the Lutheran ranks). I choose to
be not only a part of the Christian faith, but also a
part of this specific branch of our faith.
For me, being Lutheran is naming at a very direct
level that the big story of faith found in the Bible is
MY story, AND the story of my neighbors, both
those I like and those I dont know or dont like.
Being Lutheran is a calling to be a part of God
working in the world, not just throughout history
or in some distant future, but right now, working
to bring the Kingdom of Heaven into our present
reality. For me being Lutheran, although very
hopeful about what God is doing, and what we can
be doing, is also very honest about the fact that the
world we live in is broken and has real pain and
despair. Its taking seriously that the God who
created everything out of the chaos of nothingness,


doesnt shy away from real brokenness, but instead
chose to experience it first hand in and as the
Person of Jesus of Nazareth, so that nothing could
separate us from God.
For me, being Lutheran is trusting that God isnt
just a Man with a Plan to fix everything, but
instead is willing to live, mourn, cry, and even die
with us in our dark moments of utter brokenness.
The God who can honestly celebrate with us in
moments of joy, because God also experienced
despair. A God whose best image isnt of some
conquering soldier, or king on a golden set apart
throne, but as a broken and pierced Man, dying on
a cross for His friends as well as the ones who
hung him there.
For me, being Lutheran isnt about having all the
right answers, its about asking and allowing the
right questions, and being confident enough to
learn from those who disagree with you, even on
things you find extremely important. I know
disagreements are stressful and even painful, but
in the midst of truly hearing out other well-
meaning Christians, as well as people of other
faiths or no religion at all, we can learn more about
the God who created and sustains every breath for
all of us.
For me, being Lutheran is believing, that belief in
God should matter in my everyday life. Faith that
doesnt just assert itself when Im praying or wor-
shiping, but also when Im driving, or working, or
talking to people, or raising my children, or being
a husband. For me belief isnt separable, no mat-
ter how hard I might try at times, from who I am.
But perhaps most of all, for me, being Lutheran is
acknowledging that I need God, because even for
my best efforts, I am and will fail to be the good I
hope for in the world. That I need God, because I
contribute to, not just mend the brokenness that
surrounds me. For me, being Lutheran is trusting
that its this God who I put my trust in came (and
