9500 MPR n fact s a packet-based souton desgned to address n natve way
networks where packet based tramc s predomnant, nevertheess supportng the
st present TDM/ATM tramc, whch remans vta. 9500 MPR represents the
souton to aow smooth mgraton from the TDM word to the packet doman n
the Mobe Backhaung networks. The dherent ncomng tramcs are converted
nto Ethernet packets before sendng them to the nterna Ethernet swtch, the
packet overhead on E1 /STM-1 beng removed before sent n the ar.
As capacty grows n the access, the requrement for hgher bandwdth support
w be needed n the backhau as we as n the metro network. Acate-Lucent
target to address metro networks requrement wth a carrer Ethernet based
5
souton combned wth mcrowave packet transport. The resut n the ong run s
a change n the backhau from PDH nks to carrer Ethernet and n the Metro from
SDH to carrer Ethernet packet rngs, and eventuay to mesh networks. Expotng
the benets of packet archtecture vs. crcut archtecture (Mutservce
aggregaton, Servce awareness, adaptve packet transport) n accommodatng
broadband servces, 9500 MPR aows the access equpment to smoothy evove
n ne wth the new technoogy and reated protocos (ATM/TDM/Ethernet) wthout
the need of renewa of an exstng mcrowave ste and protectng the aready
made nvestments.
9500 MPR s based on two separate eements:
the MSS, an ndoor servce swtch that can aso operate as a stand aone
ste aggregator

In case of eectrca connectvty, ndoor/outdoor dstance up to 100m,a snge
CAT5 cabe connects an MPT to the MSS, or the GEthernet generc devce.
In case of optca connectvty, two cabes connect an MPT to the MSS or
GEthernet generc devce: one cabe s a 50 ohm coaxa cabe to send the -48 V
power suppy to the MPT; the second s an optca cabe.
5 6re<uenc% availabilit%
MPT covers the fu range of frequences from 5.8 GHz to 38GHz and 70/80 GHz,
ncudng 60 GHz.
5 =P*1
Thanks to XPIC functon, MPT can provde twce the capacty n one frequency
channe ( Co-channe Dua Poarzed) for any combnaton of Ethernet, PDH and
SDH up to 1Gbps.
Ths s very usefu when access to frequency channes s mted.
Two dherent conguratons of "tramc management" are avaabe:
Conguraton by defaut: tramc ows statcay congured and separated
by the user. Operator can segregate the two rado nterfaces.
In case of LAG, the mechansm s hashng the data ow. In case of
hardware faure a the tramc s redstrbuted to the workng rado and
tramc droppng s performed accordng to OoS. LAG n con|uncton wth
XPIC s provdng both capacty ncrease and protecton of the hgh prorty
tramc
MPT beng a mutpurpose rado, ALU mpemented an nnovatve souton to aow
XPIC upgrade.
MPT-HC s capabe to be upgraded n XPIC n ed thanks to a dedcated modue
drecty ntegrated n the outdoor unt.
Adaptve Moduaton (from 4OAM to 256OAM) s a workng mode supported n
con|uncton wth XPIC . Severa conguratons are avaabe:
17
2x(1+0) XPIC conguraton : 2 MPT-HC nterconnected together wth XPIC
cabe. Ths conguraton aows operatng smutaneousy two nks on the
same rado channe, wth one usng the vertca poarzaton, the other one
the horzonta.
18
Doube 1+1 HSB XPIC : ths conguraton aows to protect 100% the tramc
oaded on poarzaton H and V n case of faure.
Doube 1+1 SD HSB XPIC : same conguraton as before wth 2 antennas.
> hrou'h&ut Packet 8ooster
The fundamenta ob|ectve behnd the Acate-Lucent packet throughput boost
feature on the 9500 MPR s to maxmze the amount of tramc payoad that
traverses a nk. Ths acton s done by reducng the proporton of overhead
requred to transmt the payoad. As most mcrowave nks are pont-to-pont n
nature and are not shared resources, there s sgncant opportunty to reduce
unnecessary overhead. If we examne the content of a data packet, as shown n
gure beow, t s sometmes surprsng to see the amount of overhead when
compared to the actua user tramc contaned n the IP payoad ed. The
overhead eds are needed for routng, coson, and ow dentcaton n
compex topoogy LAN/WAN networks. But n a pont-to-pont rado nk wth fu-
dupex transmsson where the medum s not shared by smutaneous users,
overhead can be drastcay reduced to mprove and ncrease overa throughput
over the ar.
Sgncant benets can be ganed by reducng packet overhead, especay when
sma packets are consdered. Lets take a ook at each of the header eds n the
basc Ethernet frame .The rst two eds, Interframe Gap (IFG) and preambe, are
not transmtted over the ar and therefore not needed n a mcrowave
transmsson, so automatcay 20 bytes can be entrey emnated per Ethernet
frame.
Interframe Gap (12 bytes). Ethernet devces must aow a mnmum de
perod between transmssons of Ethernet frames known as the Interframe
Gap. IFG was ntroduced by IEEE 802.3 to avod coson over a shared
medum, such as the LAN.
19
Preambe and Start of Frame Demter (8 bytes). These eds were added
to the IEEE 802.3 standard to aow devces on the network to easy detect
a new ncomng frame. The remanng eds that are sub|ect to
compresson but not automatcay emnated are:
Ethernet header (14 bytes). Ths s the nformaton used to swtch an
Ethernet frame
across a network segment:
- Destnaton addresses (6 bytes)
- Source addresses (6 bytes)
- 802.1O tag (4 bytes): Optona vrtua LAN (VLAN) tag
- EtherType/ength (2 bytes); EtherType s a two-octet ed n an
Ethernet frame. It s used to ndcate whch protoco s encapsuated
n the payoad of an Ethernet frame.
Payoad (46-1500 bytes): Contans user data and/or IP/Mut-Protoco
Labe Swtchng
(MPLS) frames
We have seen that the IFG and preambe are not needed for mcrowave
transmsson, but how sgncant s that? Vsuazng the typca throughput gan
acheved wth mcrowave transmsson when compared to ber may hep. The
hghest gan occurs wth smaer packets, so ets take an exampe where the
Ethernet message s 64 bytes ong, and the physca capacty transmsson mt s
350 Mb/s.
When the message s transmtted over ber wth one VLAN present, the
frame carres
ony 42 bytes of usefu payoad nformaton but requres 84 bytes overa
for transport
as t requres the IFG and preambe. As a resut, 100 percent of the
overhead must be
transported aong wth the payoad.
For the same physca capacty transmsson mt of 350 Mb/s and 64
byte Ethernet message over mcrowave, 20 bytes do not need to be
transmtted. Ths resuts n about 100 Mb/s more data that can be
transmtted wth ths Ethernet frame sze, as shown n Fgure 2.
20
A mcrowave vendors can boast to ths eve of header suppresson, but Acate-
Lucent mproves mcrowave header compresson.
Wth the transton to LTE, another opportunty arses for optmzng payoad
across a rado nk. LTE depoyments w ncreasngy use IPv6 packets, where
addtona header overhead s encapsuated n the Ethernet payoad. IPv6 IP
addresses occupy an addtona 32 bytes, makng the transport emcency of
mut-protoco packets of short ength very poor. Header compresson can
sgncanty ncrease rado nk throughput by reducng protoco header
overhead. The header sze that s compressed s constant, whe the packet
payoad s varabe. The greater the compresson, the more gan acheved for
payoad capacty. Header compresson s most beneca when sma packets are
n the network, and when protocos ke IPv4 or IPv6 are used. But not a packets
are sma. Internet Mx or IMIX s a term used to descrbe typca Internet tramc
passng through network equpment such as routers or swtches. When
measurng equpment performance usng an IMIX of packets, the performance s
assumed to resembe what coud be observed f that equpment s depoyed n a
rea network. A typca tramc mx, adopted n the ndustry to test IPv4
performance and one that s consdered to be a good exampe of the tramc to be
found n a mobe backhaung network, s shown n Fgure. Smaer packet szes
typcay contan voce and arger packet szes data.
21
Usng the IMIX packet dstrbuton, wth 56 MHz 256OAM modem proe, and the
physca capacty transmsson mt of 350 Mb/s, the foowng gure shows the
amount of throughput ganed by usng the Acate-Lucent packet throughput
boost feature when compared to standard IFG and preambe mcrowave
suppresson.
The ght bue bar represents mcrowave wth standard 20 byte suppresson, and
the dark bue bar represents throughput capacty ganed wth Acate-Lucent
packet throughput boost feature, whch aso ncudes IFG and preambe
suppresson. As you can see, there s sgncanty more throughput ganed usng
packet throughput boost header compresson when compared to the standard
mcrowave gans acheved wth IFG and preambe suppresson.
Acate-Lucent 9500 MPR header compresson s mpemented wthout any
compromse to exstng features. Wth packet mcrowave, there s no change n
Packet Deay Varaton (PDV) vaues or ncrease n atency. The Acate-Lucent
9500 MPR mpementaton s unque n that t does not use addtona buhers,

? MPR-e
MPR-e s a new concept of rado outdoor rado.
Current MPT rado thanks to ts GEthernet nterface and ts modem has a fu
exbe archtecture capabe to support ether spt-mount archtecture and stand
aone archtecture.
Ths exbty s mnmzng drastcay the number of spare MPT and aowng to
operator to change hs network topoogy based on the same hardware (fu
outdoor can become spt-mount or the opposte). Any GEthernet generc devce
(base staton, swtch, router..) w become capabe to transmt tramc other the
ar.
The Ethernet tramc s transmtted over the rado channe accordng to the
congured OoS and to the scheduer agorthms.

Unt recenty, the desgn and form factor of wreess backhaung soutons were
not of great

As descrbed n MetroEthernet Forum, MEF-8 s a standard for "mpementng
nteroperabe CES equpment that reaby transport TDM crcuts across Metro
Ethernet Networks whe meetng the requred performance of crcut emuated
TDM servces as dened n ITU-T and ANSI TDM standards". The Crcut Emuaton
Servce (CES) emuates a crcut network, by packetzng, encapsuatng and
tunneng the TDM tramc over Ethernet.
ME/-+ 1erice 'e4nitions
Acate-Lucent 9500 MPR mpements a propretary technque that reduces to a
few percentages the overhead mprovng the use on bandwdth on ar when MEF-
8 emuated crcuts are transported. The mprovement depends on the MEF-8
payoad sze and frame format and n case of TDM2TDM resuts n havng qute
the same emcency than a tradtona TDM rado.
.> 8#R &erformances
When MEF-8 Ethernet frames are transmtted through a nosy medum (e.g. the
Rado Physca Layer), bt errors may occur. If an Ethernet frame s ahected by
one error, ths s detected and the entre frame s dropped. Ths ahects the TDM
wth a worse BER that f compared wth a tradtona TDM over TDM transmsson
process, t s hgher, mutped by a factor that s the frame ength.
54
In order to avod such BER degradaton a technque s mpemented such as for
any reasonabe BER on the Rado Channe, the TDM transported by MEF-8
CESoETH s ahected by the same BER wthout any mutpcaton ehect.
.? Packet !ela% Dariation control
A technque s mpemented n order to contro Packet Deay Varaton (PDV)
ahectng MEF-8 Ethernet frames. Wth ths technque the watng tme that ahects
MEF-8 Ethernet frames are not dependng on the ength of the Ethernet frame.
Ths gves benet n term of packet deay varaton mnmzaton, so that any knd
of servces (VoIP, TDM, ATM, Ethernet) s experencng a sma cost vaue of PDV,
ndependenty and regardess of the tramc oad.

9500 MPR termnates the natve ATM stream coected through ASAP card and to
aggregate ths tramc nto a unque Ethernet ow towards the ar.
In the 9500 MPR node facng the Core Network, the orgna ATM stream can be
ether re-but on ASAP card or sent as ATM PW packets through Ethernet

ASAP card supports Inverse Mutpexng over ATM (IMA) v.1.1. It s possbe to
congure up to 8 IMA groups on the same card; a snge IMA group can support 1

The ASAP card extracts the ATM ces from each IMA group and dscards the
empty ces, optmzng the bandwdth; t performs pocng on ATM tramc and
encapsuates the ATM ces nto Ethernet packets, accordng to RFC 4717.
At rado eve, 9500 MPR manages the OoS of the orgna ATM stream accordng

Same propretary technque used n MEF-8 transport to mprove the use on

the orgna ATM ows are re-but on ASAP board. ATM aggregaton s
performed by coectng the tramc of mutpe NodeB onto a snge IMA
group wth a reduced number of E1 output nks. In ths scenaro,
optmzaton s acheved at rado eve and n terms of number of E1

7 MP echnical descri&tion
Three dherent MPT optons are proposed:
MPT XP (Extended Power)
MPT HC (Hgh Capacty)
MPT MC (Medum Capacty)
The three varants are usng a common archtecture. They can work :
- n spt mount : connected to MSS4/8 and MSS-1c,
- stand aone mode, caed MPR-e,
- or ntegrated : connected to 7705 SAR or 1850 TSS to address MPLS converged
networks.
The dherences between the three versons are descrbed hereafter:
1+1 Conguraton
MPT-HC and XP oher the possbty to expand ther capabtes thanks to a
modue whch can be drecty pugged onto the outdoor unt. Two modues are
avaabe: XPIC modue (to be used for XPIC conguraton) and RPS modue (to be
used for 1+1 conguraton). The two mate MPTs are consequenty nterconnected
through a cabe to aow the exchange of sgnas needed to perform XPIC or RPS
functonates.
Note: RPS modues and the tght connectng cabe between two mate MPT-HCs
and XPs are optona.
Note: Defaut conguraton for 1+1 HSB/SD/FD rado protecton does not requre
RPS modue and tght cabe: the sgnas needed for RPS are exchanged between
two mate MPTs through IDU/ODU cabes and through MSS, nstead of usng RPS
modues and tght cabe. Ths s eadng to a cost optmzed souton not ony n
term of cost but aso n term of operatons.
Connectvty
MPT MC ohers eectrca connectvty on a snge CAT5 cabe provdng data and
power.
76
In addton, MPT HC / XP oher both eectrca connectvty on a snge CAT5 cabe
provdng data, power and optca connectvty
XPIC functon
Ths functon s supported on MPT HC and XP ony.
Extended power
MPT XP proposes an eXtended emsson Power compared to MPT HC and MC, from
6 to 8dB dependng on moduaton. Ths aows an mprovement for system gan.
It s avaabe for ow frequences: L6 GHz, U6 GHz,7GHz and 8GHz.
Except for emsson power and for system gan, MPT XP presents the same
performances as MPT HC. In addton, the nterface, and the nstaaton matera
s aso the same. A MPT XPs are usng externa dpexers that are compatbe
wth MPT HC or MC. MPT XP s aso the best n cass for power consumpton
perspectves compared to the competton.
Even f the goba shape s the same between MPT HC / MC and XP, there s no
possbe kt to upgrade MPT HC or MC to MPT XP.
The MPT XP can be powered wth an MPT Extended Power Unt (see further
secton on ths topc).
The MPT supports capactes from 2xE1 to 160xE1 (6 to 553 Mbps) and
moduaton rates OPSK, 8PSK, 16OAM, 32OAM, 64 OAM, 128 OAM and 256 OAM
wthout hardware change. A channezaton from 3.5 MHz up to 56 MHz can aso
be used n the same patform.
MPT s avaabe for a censed frequency bands from 6 to 38 GHz.
Baseband sgna comng from MSS s transported to MPT through optca or
eectrca connectvty.
In case of eectrca connectvty, a snge CAT5 cabe connects an MPT to the
MSS, whch carres transmt and receve baseband sgnas, teemetry overheads,
nterna contros and MPT DC power.
In case of optca connectvty, two cabes connect an MPT to the MSS: one cabe
s a 50 ohm coaxa cabe to send the -48 V power suppy to the MPT; the second
cabe s an Ethernet optca cabe that carres transmt and receve baseband
sgnas, teemetry overheads and nterna contros.

An MPT-GC nk conssts of two rado termnas that transmt to each other on a
fu dupex channe par, provdng pont-to-pont Ethernet and/or SONET/SDH
connectvty between two ocatons.
The ODU s connected to ndoor equpment through ber for GbE connecton.
Power must be provded to ODU through a separate cabe.
Each MPT-GC unt contans up to four SFP ports avaabe for SONET/SDH and four
SFP ports pus one copper R|-45 port avaabe for Ethernet. Any combnaton of
ports can be used to carry tramc across the nk.
The Ethernet nterface tramc s brdged across the nk va an embedded swtch.
The SONET/SDH tramc s handed separatey wthn the rado and does not pass
through the nterna swtch.
The SONET/SDH and Ethernet tramc are aggregated wthn the rado unt for
transmsson overthe ar to the far end of the nk. The porton of the rado
bandwdth that s not used by enabed SONET/SDH nterfaces s avaabe for use
by the Ethernet nterfaces.
Dependng on conguraton the avaabe Ethernet bandwdth can exceed
1000Mbps.
Frequency Agi,ity
