EWSD
Integrated Synchronous Transfer Mode Interface (STMI)
EWSD meets the network challenge
EWSD is the cost-efficient and future-proof solution for
PSTN/ISDN networks. EWSD is being continuously
improved by new feature releases of innovative and
revenue generating solutions. In combination with
components of the Attane hiA and SURPASS product
families, EWSD also supports the migration to the Next
Generation Network.
Synchronous Transfer Mode Interface (STMI) is the
new integrated economic solution in EWSD for
connecting EWSD to SDH networks.

Description of the solution
Synchronous Digital Hierarchy (SDH) promisees to
become the uniformtransport mechanismof the future.
SDH creates a hierarchical multiplex system in a ring
structure, as opposed to traditional point-to-point
backbone links in PDH.
SDH is based on a transmission bit rate of 155 Mbit/s,
also called STM-1 (Synchronous Transport
Mechanism). Up to 63 x 2 Mbit/s interfaces in an STM-
1 ring are possible, providing a payload (actual
transmission bandwidth) of 126 Mbit/s. SDH standards
also handle what is called STM-4 (622 Mbit/s) and
STM-16 (2.4 Gbit/s).
Advantages of SDH transport networks include:
exible, software-controlled transport networks,
instead of rigid, hardware-based PDH
resilience in transmission - signals are transmitted
in two directions
advanced event management and fault location
SDH will not necessarily replace PDH because it is also
capable of carrying PDH signals.
The integrated STM-1 interface (STMI) for EWSD can
be applied on the trunk side and on the access side.
With the STM-1 interfaces provided by STMI instead of
normal E1 interfaces, customers benefit from a higher
transmission rate, reduced hardware requirements,
and a smaller, space-saving footprint.
Furthermore, the widespread availability of the STM-1
interface in transmission networks makes STMI a more
economic solution. Customers can also simplify their
cabling, because no main distribution frame/digital
distribution frame (MDF/DDF) is required.
The OA&M functions for STMI, such as Alarm
Surveillance, Performance Measurement and
Provisioning, etc., are integrated in the NetManager.
STMI in trunk application
Thanks to its advantages such as flexibility and
software control of SDH, as compared with PDH, STM-
1 protocol is increasingly being implemented in the
transmission network. Between EWSD and the SDH
ring, an adaptation is required if normal E1 interfaces
from the switching side still exist (MDF/MUX). Since
STMI requires no E1 and no further adaptation, the
footprint can be reduced significantly. Other significant
savings, such as in power consumption, bring the
operator further operational benefits.

Structure of STMI
Module structure
The STMI includes the following modules:
Worker / Protection Module (STM1I)
The STM1I provides the interface to the user side
and can be either optical (short haul, 1300 nm) or
electrical (coax, G.703). Due to the high channel
capacity (1890 channels), a 1+1 redundant module
conguration (worker module, W + protection
module, P) has been chosen. Automatic single-end
spare switching with multiplex section protection
(MSP) functionality is supported if failures are
detected on the STM-1 interface. Optionally, mainly
for smaller applications with less operational
channels and/or for cost saving reasons, a non-
redundant conguration can be supported by
simply omitting the protection module.
Group Processor STMI (GPS)
The GPS has an electrical connection to the
switching network and supports as well the optical
interface via the optical switching network interface
(SNOPT). The GPS contains the main processing
software in STMI as well as the trunk and access
application (e.g. signaling).
Optical switching network interface (SNOPT)
The 1+1 redundant SNOPT provides the optical
interface to SND.
Rack structure
The STMI rack includes:
2 x STMI per frame (1 STMI per half shelf)
6 frames (12 x STMI) per rack
One rack can mount up to 22,680 trunk ports.
OA&M
Fully integrated OA&M for the STMI is provided by the
NetManager, which supports Alarm Surveillance, Per-
formance Measurement and Provisioning. For these
OA&M purposes, the STMI has an IP-based Ethernet
10BaseT interface to the NetManager. The individual
OA&M interfaces of the STMI are concentrated onto a
single 10/100BaseT Ethernet O&M interface for
connection to the NetManager. In larger configurations,
a LAN switch can additionally concentrate the OA&M
interfaces of several racks and, in remote NetManager
locations, a common IP-based network can be used to
link up the O&M interfaces to the NetManager.
