Good Day everyone, I believe any parent of music student wants his/her child suc

cced. While you may be thinking how to help your child practice when you know so
little about music? and sometimes you are exhausted and last thing you want to
hear is your child banging nonsense notes on the piano, still the fact is that w
ithout your help your child will get stuck in their music lessons sonner or late
r.
The ultimate goal for every music learner is to develop a more independent pract
ices, and this process begins with YOU (the parent).
1. Understand how to practice and understand your teacher's practice strategies.
The amount of assignments per week, sequence and frequency of practising. (Usua
lly teachers will jot down what are taught during lesson, assignments, and highl
ights of any mistakes when practising).
I believe every one of you here heard about twinkle - twinkle little star, Ten L
ittle fingers, Rasa Sayang, etc... (any folk songs) these are the pieces that yo
u'll never get wrong, and these are usually the pieces that your children will b
e learning in their early days of learing music, thus from there you are able to
tell your child whether if he/she is playing the right note.
2. Set up daily schedule and be consistent. Accompany your child when they are p
ractising, praise them if they successfully played a piece or a phrase. It is yo
ur attention that counts. And if you happen to have video recorder, record every
practise sessions with your children, this will built up their confidence playi
ng infront of an audience or audiences of any numbers.
3. Better environment for practice. You must provide sufficient tools and resour
ces for your child, which usually the teachers will tell you what are the necess
ities for your child for example: music books, theory books, music stand, standa
rd quality piano (keyboard), colour pencils, guitar picks.. etc. And by better e
nvironment I mean feelings you have towards practicing music with your child and
that you must not feel bored, under pressure, or even feel rush as these feelin
gs will eventually send a message telling them that their performance is rather
boring, annoying or maybe even disturbing. Aren't that sad?'
Last but not least, often than not you'll find that music lessons is not about l
earing songs or pieces instead they are learing how to practice, how to solve pr
oblems, learn how to learn so on and so forth. Thus practice well and enjoy your
journey of music learning adventure. Thank You.
