he 40th G-7 summit 2014 was held at Justus Lipsius building, Brussels at the Council of the European
Union on 4 June 2014 5 June 2014. It was the first time that the EU hosted a G7 summit. The summit is
jointly represented by the European Council President Herman van Rompuy and the European Commission
President. The leaders of Canada, France, Germany, Italy, Japan, the United Kingdom, the United States, the
President of the European Council and the President of the European Commission (G7 leaders) met for the
summit.
G7 was earlier known as G8 but after Russia being expelled from the group, the group is again known as
G7.

ithuania will become the 19th member of the euro zone out of 28 countries in the European Union, and the
last of the Baltic States to join. The UK and Denmark are the only EU states with opt-outs from the euro.
All other countries are expected to join. Estonia was the first Baltic state to become a member of the euro zone
in 2011, followed by Latvia on 1 January 2014.
he General Assembly of UNO on 6th June established the United Nations Nelson Rolihlahla Mandela
Prize as a tribute to the achievements and contributions of the late South African leader who inspired not
only his own country but the rest of the world. By the terms of the resolution, the Assembly asked the
Secretary-General, in consultation with the President of the Assembly, to establish within six months of
adoption of the text the criteria and procedures for bestowing the prize. This is to be adopted by the Assembly
before 30th November 2014.
N Secretary General Ban Ki-moon on 6 June nominated Jordan's envoy Prince Zeid Ra'ad Zeid Al-
Hussein as the new High Commissioner for Human Rights. He was replaced Indian-origin Ms. Navi
Pillay. Mr Al-Hussein is currently Jordan's Permanent Representative to the United Nations. Mr Al-Hussein
will replace Ms navi Pillay, who was appointed High Commissioner for Human Rights in July 2008 and her
mandate was renewed for two years beginning September 2012. Ms. Navi Pillay is from South Africa.
yrian President Bashar al-Assad has won a third term in office after securing 88.7% of votes in 3 June
presidential election. President Assad's challengers Hassan al-Nouri and Maher Hajjar, received 4.3% and
3.2% of the vote respectively. Bashar belongs to the Baath Party. Tens of thousands of people have died in
three years of civil war in Syria, with millions more displaced.

wing rebel leader. He belongs to the Farabundo Marti National Liberation Front party (FMLN). Salvador
Sanchez Ceren will succeed outgoing Mauricio Funes. He served the country as President from 2009 to 2014.
El Salvador is a Central American country.

patients to kill themselves with a doctors help. With legalizing the legislation, Quebec became first
province of the country to legalize doctor-assisted death. The bill is labelled as Dying with Dignity or Bill 52

Assisted suicide is allowed in some countries like- Switzerland.
etro Poroshenko took the oath on 7th June as Ukraine's president. Petro Poroshenko was supported by
Western nations. Poroshenko was elected on May 25.Since Poroshenko's election, government forces have
begun an intensified campaign against separatist fighters in eastern Ukraine who want to split with Kiev and
become part of Russia.
he Barak Obamas government on 2nd June, unveiled historic environment rules cutting carbon pollution
from power plants by 30%, for a global deal to end climate change. The new rules, formally announced by
the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) has moved to regulate carbon pollution from power plants the
largest single source of carbon dioxide emissions that cause climate change. The EPA said the regulations,
which would cut carbon pollution from power plants 30% from 2005 levels by 2030, would fight climate
change while supplying America with reliable and affordable power. Power plants are the largest single source
of carbon pollution, accounting for nearly 40% of the emissions that cause climate change.
epal on 7th June decided to shift the venue of the 18th SAARC summit in November from its famous
tourist destination of Pokhara to Kathmandu due to lack of infrastructure. Official sources said the
government is making preparations for holding the next Bay of Bengal Initiative for Multi-Sectoral Technical
and Economic Cooperation (BIMSTEC) meeting in Pokhara. The meeting of BIMSTEC is held every two
years.
four-day Global Summit to end Sexual Violence in Conflict was launched in London on 10Th June 2014.
The Summit was launched by Hollywood actress and UN Special Envoy Angelina Jolie and UK Foreign
Secretary William Hague. The aim of the Summit was to take concrete action to improve lives of victims and to
establish best practice for obtaining witness testimony of crime of sexual violence in conflict. As per estimates,
about 150 million girls and women are raped every year in conflict around the world. It includes 70 million men
and boys. The Summit was attended by high-level foreign delegations from 140 countries.
n June 10th, the Israeli parliament elected 74-year-old Reuven Rivlin as Israels 10th president. He will
succeed 90-year-old Shimon Peres, who has been the Israeli president since July 2007.Rivlin is a former
minister of communications and twice speaker of the Knesset. The presidency in Israel is largely ceremonial.

he United Nations General Assembly on 11 June elected Sam Kahamba Kutesa of Uganda as President of
its upcoming 69th session. Mr. Kutesa, is the Minister for Foreign Affairs of Uganda. Made up of all the
193 Member States of the United Nations, the General Assembly provides a forum for multilateral discussion of
the full spectrum of international issues covered by the UN Charter. It meets in regular session intensively from
September to December each year, and thereafter as required.

liability of the operator in case of nuclear incident. It secures the operator the right to recourse under
certain circumstances. Apart from this, the CLND Act also provided a mechanism to compensate victims of

ussia on 10 June in principle agreed on the Indian nuclear liability law. It paves the way for signing a
contract for unit 3 and 4 of the Kudankulam Nuclear Power Plant in July. India and Russia signed a
General Framework Agreement on unit 3 and 4 in April this year after crossing the initial hurdles of the Civil
Liability Nuclear Damage Act 2010. The agreement could not be signed in October last year when the then
Indian Prime Minister Manmohan Singh visited Russia, as Moscow has raised objection over some clauses of
the Civil Liability for Nuclear Damage (CLND) Act. Unit 1 of the KKNPP has attained 100 per cent capacity of
1000 MW while the second unit should start generating power from this year.
Units 1 and 2 of Tamil Nadu-based Kudankulam Nuclear Power Plant (KKNPP) have been built with
the help of Russian assistance at the cost of Rs 17,200 crore.
raq's Prime Minister Nouri Maliki on 10 June asked parliament to declare a state of emergency after Islamist
militants effectively took control of Mosul and much of its province of Nineveh. The Iraqi Prime Minister
Nuri al-Maliki has called upon to United Nations, Arab League, European Union and others to support Iraq in
its stand on fighting terrorism.
ISIS was formed in April 2013 and grew out of al-Qaedas affiliate organization in Iran. Abu Bakr al-
Baghdadi is the leader of the group.
It is mostly active in northern and eastern Syria and northern Iraq.
Mosul is the second largest city of Iraq.
he World Health Organization (WHO) on 19th June said that the number of people killed by the deadly
Ebola virus in West Africa has raised to 337.Guinea is worst-affected with 264 Ebola-related deaths. In
Sierra Leone, there have been 49 deaths and in Liberia 24.The three countries have been battling to contain the
outbreak since February. The outbreak began in southern Guinea's Guekedou region, but then spread to its
neighbours.
There is no cure or vaccine for Ebola - one of the world's deadliest viruses.

he African Unions Peace and Security Council (AUPSC) on 18th June 2014 restored the membership of
Egypt into the African Union. The decision was taken at the meeting of the 15-member states of AUPSC in
Addis Ababa, Egypt. With this Egypt became eligible to participate in African Summit that is to be held later in
June 2014 in Malabo, the capital of Equatorial Guinea. Egypt was suspended from the 54-nation AU in July
2013 after the ouster of the President Mohamed Morsi by the then Army Chief Abdel Fattah al-Sisi who is the
countrys current president.

Institute for Economics and Peace has measured peace for 162 countries on the basis of 22 indicators. The
IEP is a Sydney-based international and independent think tank dedicated to shifting the worlds focus to peace
as a positive, achievable, and tangible measure of human well-being and progress. India has been ranked 143rd
position. In GPI 2013, India was ranked 141st.In the GPI 2014; Syria became the worlds least peaceful nation
while Iceland is the most peaceful country in the world. Top 5 most peaceful countries are

hina has commissioned a preliminary research study to build an international rail link connecting its border
province of Xinjiang to Pakistan. It is said to be a contentious project from India's perspective as it runs
through Pakistan-occupied Kashmir (PoK).China has allocated funds for preliminary research on building an
international railway connecting its westernmost city of Kashgar in Xinjiang with Pakistan's deep-sea Gwadar
Port on the Arabian Sea. This 1,800-km China-Pakistan railway is planned to pass through Pakistan's capital of
Islamabad and Karachi. China and Pakistan have already signed a multi-billion-dollar deal to construct an
Economic Corridor through PoK connecting Kashgar with Gwadar port. Pakistan has already handed over the
control of the Gwadar port, which provided an opening for the Arabian Sea and Persian Gulf to Beijing. China
is now running the port just opposite the Gulf of Oman, an important route for oil tankers. China plans to build
a pipeline network to download the oil from ships and pump it across to Xinjiang through the proposed pipeline
network.

he World Heritage Committee on 23rd June inscribed the Great Himalayan National Park Conservation
Area (GHNPCA), India on the World Heritage List. The Great Himalayan National Park (GHNP) is
located in the Kullu District of Himachal Pradesh, India. The concept of environmental conservation in the
Kullu Valley is very ancient. The names of many places in this valley commemorate saints who came here to
meditate in the great sanctuary of Himalayas. The Great Himalayan National Park Conservation Area
(GHNPCA) has GHNP (754.4 sq km), Sainj (90 sq km) and Tirthan (61 sq km) Wildlife Sanctuaries. GHNPCA
is home to several Rare and Threatened species including the Western Tragopan, Chir Pheasant, Snow Leopard,
Himalayan Musk Deer, Asiatic Black Bear, Himalayan Tahr, Blue Sheep and Serow. Around 25 Threatened
IUCN Red-listed plant species are recorded from the park. The GHNP has more than 35 peaks of greater than
5000m and two greater than 6000m.
r. Radha Mohan Singh, Minister of Agriculture of India inaugurated the 33rd session of Asia Pacific
Fisheries Commission at Hyderabad on 23 June. The Minister said in this context that the Blue growth
is an important area for sustainable food security. The oceans and the inland waters of their countries offer
excellent scope for blue growth. He also said that the Indian government was planning to develop a policy for
aquaculture growth in the country. The Minister Mr. Radha Mohan Singh offered Indias cooperation in
aquaculture and fisheries to other countries, both for their sustainable development and management. Asia
Pacific Fisheries Commission (APFIC) is an important platform for the governments of APFIC members,
international and regional fisheries and aquaculture organizations to discuss important and emerging issues
related to the development and management of fisheries and aquaculture in Asia and Pacific region.

he United Nations on 24th June launched a global environment conference at Kenyan capital Nairobi. It
was aimed at taking up challenges from poaching to marine pollution and boosting the "green economy".
The meeting in Nairobi is the first ever United Nations Environment Assembly (UNEA).Organisers said that it
would influence policy action on environmental themes, ranging from sustainable consumption and production,
and financing the green economy, to the illegal trade in wildlife, and environmental rule of law. Key issues on
the agenda are- the issue of plastic contamination, which threatens marine life, tourism, and fisheries on vast
scale, the impacts of excess nitrogen and marine aquaculture, as well as dangers posed by air pollution. The
five-day event run by the UN Environment Programme. UNEA was set up after suggestions made at the UN
Conference on Sustainable Development in Rio de Janeiro two years ago.

he prestigious UNESCO World Heritage Site list crossed the 1,000 mark as the 38th Session of World
Heritage Committee at Doha (Qatar) concludes on 25 June 2014. The Okavango Delta in northwest
Botswana became its 1,000th site. The African delta was among 26 new places on the globe singled out for
recognition, including a first one in Myanmar and a new one in the U.S.
free-trade zone between Ukraine and the European Union takes another step toward reality, as the nation
that's under pressure from pro-Russian separatists signs an economic agreement with the EU. The deal
also includes two other former Soviet states, Moldova and Georgia.

Chandrasekhar Rao of TRS Party took oath of office on 2nd June as the first chief minister of Telangana.
It was the Indias 29th state, created on 2 June by bifurcating Andhra Pradesh. On 2nd June morning, ESL
Narasimhan was sworn in as Governor of both Telangana and the residuary Andhra Pradesh. KCR took oath
along with 11 ministers in Hyderabad (capital of Telangana).
elugu Desam Party chief N. Chandrababu Naidu was sworn in as the first Chief Minister of the new state of
Andhra Pradesh on 8th June in a ceremony held at the grounds opposite Acharaya Nagarjuna University in
Guntur. Nineteen ministers who will form Mr. Naidus Cabinet were also sworn in along with Chandrababu
Naidu.


ndia on 4 June elected to the Intergovernmental Committee for the Safeguarding of the Intangible Cultural
Heritage for the next 4 years (2014-2018). The election was held at UNESCO Headquarters, Paris by the
General Assembly of the States. India recorded the highest number of votes amongst the ten countries which
contested the election and have won.
The Intergovernmental Committee for the Safeguarding of the Intangible Cultural Heritage has 24
members who are elected for a term of four years.
The core functions of the Committee are to safeguard the Intangible Cultural Heritage (ICH), ensuring
respect for the intangible cultural heritage of nations, groups and individuals, as also to raise awareness
at the local,

national and international levels of the importance of the Intangible Cultural Heritage.
This is the second time that India has been elected to the Intergovernmental Committee for the
Safeguarding of the Intangible Cultural Heritage.
umitra Mahajan was unanimously elected as Speaker of the 16th Lok Sabha on 6 June 2014. She replaced
Meria Kumar and became the second women presiding officer of the Lok Sabha.Sumitra Mahajan was born
in Maharashtra in 1943. She served as Minister of State in the Atal Behari Vajpayee cabinet from 1999 to 2004,
holding portfolios of Human Resources, Communications & IT and Petroleum and Natural Gas.

he Committee under the chairmanship of M. P. Bezbaruah, Member, North Eastern Council and other
members called on the Minister of State for Home Affairs, Kiren Rijiju on 2 May. Kiren Rijiju reviewed
the progress made by the Committee which was constituted on 6th February, 2014. The Committee is looking
into the various concerns of persons hailing from the North Eastern States who are living in different parts of
the country, especially the Metropolitan areas, and will suggest suitable remedial measures which could be
taken by the Government. The terms of Reference of the Committee are as follows:-
To examine the various kinds of concerns, including the concerns regarding security, of the persons
hailing from the North Eastern States.
To examine the causes behind the attacks/violence and discrimination against the people from the North-
Eastern States.
To suggest measures to be taken by the Government to address these concerns.
To suggest legal remedies to address these concerns.
ndia on 13th June joined a select group of 17 countries who are permanent signatories of the Washington
Accord (WA). It will be a major boost to technical education & engineering programs in India. The meeting
of the International Engineering Alliance of WA member countries met in Wellington, New Zealand on 13 June
and gave India the signatory status with effect from the same date. This will ensure highest quality assurance
standards to be implemented in the countrys technical and engineering programmes and provide global
mobility to the nations engineering graduates. The Washington Accord was signed by the National Board of
Accreditation, India, an accrediting body with the mandate for accreditation of engineering and other technical
programs at all levels in the country and making technical education outcome based.
Washington Accord is an international agreement amongst prominent nations of the World, with the
charter of promoting mobility and quality assurance of engineers across international boundaries. The
charter requires that nations set up suitable accreditation standards, which would ensure a minimum
quality of attainment for their engineering graduates.
he Prime Minister Mr. Narendra Modi on 14th June dedicated the ultra-modern aircraft carrier INS
Vikramaditya to the Navy, off the coast of Goa. INS Vikramaditya has been acquired from Russia for over
Rs. 15,000 crore. The deal for the warship was signed in 2004 during previous NDA regime. It has been
dedicated to the nation after a gap of 10 years. INS Vikramaditya joined Indian Navy on 16 November 2013
after being commissioned by the then Union Defence Minister AK Antony at Sevmash shipyard of Russia.
he Prime Minister Narendra Modi on 10th June decided to discontinue the following four Standing
Committees of the Cabinet. The Prime Minister will re-constitute the Appointments Committee of the
Cabinet, the Cabinet Committee on Economic Affairs, the Cabinet Committee on Parliamentary Affairs, the
Cabinet Committee on Political Affairs and the Cabinet Committee on Security.
Cabinet Committee on Management of Natural Calamities: The functions of this Committee will be
handled by the Committee under the Cabinet Secretary whenever natural calamities occur.

he Delhi Government on 16th June announced that the national capital has become the first kerosene-free
city in the country. The scheme was launched in 2012 in collaboration with three Oil Marketing
Companies and Union Ministry of Petroleum and Natural Gas for which Delhi Government had incurred an

conservation as no toxic fumes would emanate from burning the oil, lesser possibility of adulteration in petrol,
beneficial impact on air pollution and improvement in the quality of life of people benefited under the scheme
besides lesser fire accidents and burn injuries.
n a first in the country, Madhya Pradesh's capital Bhopal now has a one stop crisis centre 'Gauravi' for
women who are victims of violence. The centre was inaugurated on 16 June by Union Health and Family
welfare Minister Dr Harsh Vardhan, actor Aamir Khan and Madhya Pradesh Chief Minister Shivraj Singh
Chouhan. It was set up in Jai Prakash Hospital with the support of NGO Action Aid, victims can seek help by
directly walking in or by calling a toll free number. Victims of rape, dowry harassment and domestic violence
will get medical aid and also help in filing FIRs, legal advice and psychological counseling. As per National
Crime Record Bureau's 2012 report, Madhya Pradesh witnesses the highest number of rapes.
nion Government on 20th June decided to set up an Expert Committee consisting of representative of
various stakeholders in the Rubber Sector to examine the issues relating to production, development and
exports of rubber and related products. The committee will also recommend an appropriate National Policy on
Rubber which will cover production, consumption and import of all types of rubber i.e. Natural Rubber (NR),
Synthetic Rubber (SR) and Reclaimed Rubber (RR).The committee would be serviced by the Rubber Board and
has been advised to submit the draft of National Rubber Policy in an early time frame.
rithviraj Chavan led Maharashtra government on 25 June approved a populist proposal to provide 16%
reservation for backward Marathas and 5 per cent for Muslims in education and government jobs. As a

existing 52 per cent reservation for reserved communities. With the reservation for Marathas and Muslims, total
reservation in the state will be 73 per cent. The issue of providing reservation for backward Muslims was first
raised in 2004 when Vilasrao Deshmukh was the chief minister, while the issue of Maratha reservation was
older.
In Tamil Nadu the reservations are 69 per cent.
ifteen villagers of Nagaram (East Godavari, A.P) were burnt to death and 30 injured on 27th June as a huge
fire and explosions caused by a suspected leak by a GAIL gas pipeline in Andhra Pradesh. The fire, caused
by suspected leakage from the 18-inch pipeline of GAIL India Ltd, devastated the village near the Tatipaka
refinery of the Oil and Natural Gas Corp (ONGC).The central government ordered a probe and announced ex-
gratia payment of Rs.2 lakh each to the next of kin of those killed. As flames several meters high leapt from the
pipeline passing through Nagaram village in East Godavari district, several of the villagers were in sleep by the
blasts failed to escape the blaze. The dead include three women and three children. Officials said the fatalities
could rise as the condition of 15 of the injured was said to be critical.
he Defence Minister Mr. Arun Jaitley on 27 June laid the foundation stone for HQ Integrated Defense Staff
(IDS) Building Complex at Mehramnagar, Delhi Cantonment Area. The proposed multi-storied IDS
building complex situated near NSG HQ in Mehramnagar, Delhi Cantonment will come up over an area of
10.57 acres of land. Based on the Kargil Review Committee Report and subsequent recommendation of the
Group of Ministers, the Integrated Defence Staff was set up by the Government of India in October 2001. The
aim of forming Integrated Defence Staff was to provide a secretariat to the Chairman COSC (Chief of Defence
Staff /Permanent Chairman Chief of Staff when appointed), facilitate constitution of Defence Crisis
Management Group (DCMG), coordination of financial and budgetary proposals for the three services and

Bilateral Issues

he Indian Air Force & French Air Force commenced the bilateral exercise Ex Garuda V at Jodhpur Air
Base on 2 June. The main objective of the exercise is enhancing Operational Co-operation and to validate
capabilities. During this fortnight long exercise both the Air Forces would engage in Operations based on their
Operational Philosophy and methodology of operations practicing various challenging air situation scenarios.
The Exercise would help both Air Forces in appreciating the intricacies of planning and conduct of combat
missions in an Operational Environment. Frontline fighter aircraft of the IAF including the SU 30, Mig-27
(UPG), Mig 21 Bison and force multipliers such as the AWACS and Flight Refueller Aircraft IL 78 would be
participating from the Indian Air Force while the French AF has fielded their frontline Rafale Fighter aircraft
along with their KC 135 Refueller.
The Fifth Indo-French bilateral Air Exercise Garuda-V is scheduled from 2-13 June at Air Force
Station Jodhpur. The previous edition of the exercise was held at Istres, France during 2010.

redit Agreement for World Bank DPL Loan of US$ 100 million for promoting Inclusive Growth and
Sustainable Development has been signed between the Government of India, the World Bank and the
Government of Himachal Pradesh in New Delhi on 11 June. The Loan agreement signed will be financed by the
Clean Technology Fund (CTF). It will help Himachal Pradesh bring in better policies and practices to guide the
development of sustainable hydropower; adapt and mitigate the effects of climate change; empower local
communities to conserve their watersheds better; promote cleaner methods of industrial production; promote
environmentally sustainable tourism; and integrate GIS in decision making. The Government of Himachal
Pradesh is the implementing agency.

deliberated on regional and international issues of mutual concern. Rogozin and Sushma have discussed about

Russia has in-principle, agreed to the Indian nuclear liability law, paving the way for signing a contract
for unit 3 and 4 of the Kudankulam Nuclear Power Plant (KNPP).
India and Russia signed a general framework agreement on unit 3 and 4 in April this year after crossing
the initial hurdles of the Civil Liability Nuclear Damage Act 2010.
ndian and New Zealand universities on 26 June partnered to offer as many as seven joint research projects
worth NZ$ 460,000 (US$ 403,500). Education New Zealand (ENZ) and the University Grants Commission,
India, have collaborated to offer diverse programmes for Indian and New Zealand researchers as part of an
initiative by the India New Zealand Education Council (INZEC) seeking to enhance bilateral tertiary education
cooperation. The topics covered will include health and migration patterns in the South Pacific, managing India
New Zealand institutional challenges and the impact of climate change.
Among the Indian universities, participants include Jamia Millia Islamia University, New Delhi, Anna
University, Chennai, Madurai Kamaraj University, Tamil Nadu, University of Delhi, University of

ndia has improved its ranking as per the recent data released on 2 May, UN Comtrade in Global Textiles as
well as Apparel Exports. In Global Textiles Exports, India now stands at 2nd place while China still retains
its no.1 position. Indias share in Global Textiles has increased by 17.5% in the year 2013 compared to the

as the global textiles growth rate is only 4.7% compared to India as it has registered the growth of 23% beating
China and Bangladesh which has registered 11.4% and 15.4%, respectively.
Total global textiles exports are to the tune of US$ 772 billion with India commanding 5.2% of the share. This
growth in the increase in share of the Textiles Exports from India is largely attributed to the growth in the
Apparel and Clothing sector as it accounts for the almost 43% of the share alone. Indias apparel exports, was to
the tune of US$ 15.7 billion in 2013, as against US$ 12.9 billion in 2012. Indias Apparel Exports growth was
highest registering 21.8% growth during the year 2013. Apparel exports from India accounts for 3.7% of share
in the global readymade garment exports.
In Global Textiles Exports, India now stands at 2nd place. China is in no.1 position.
Total global textiles exports are to the tune of US$ 772 billion with India having 5.2% share.
The Apparel Exports ranking has also improved from 8th position in 2012 to 6th position in 2013.
he Reserve Bank of India (RBI) announced second Bi-Monthly Monetary Policy Statement on 3 June
2014. RBI in its second bi-monthly monetary policy statement has kept the policy rates unchanged. The
Bank Rate is at 9.0 percent. The cash reserve ratio (CRR) is unchanged at 4.0 percent of net demand and time
liabilities (NDTL). The repo rate under the liquidity adjustment facility (LAF) unchanged at 8.0 percent. The
statutory liquidity ratio (SLR) of scheduled commercial banks has been reduced by 50 basis points from 23.0
percent to 22.5 percent of their NDTL with effect from 14 June 2014.The reverse repo rate under the LAF
remained unchanged at 7.0 percent and the marginal standing facility (MSF) rate. and the Bank Rate at 9.0
percent.

succeed the current Chief Executive and Managing Director S. D. Shibulal. It is for the first time that the
Infosys did not choose one of its founders for the role. Earlier, he worked as non-founder Chief Executive

Murthy and S. Gopalakrishnan will step down as Executive Chairman and Executive Vice-Chairman on 14 June
2014. However both the co-founders will continue on the board to ensure smooth transition till 10 October 2014

hinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi visited India and held talks with Union External Affairs Minister
Sushma Swaraj on 7th June in New Delhi. They decided to inject new momentum in their economic ties
with both countries pushing for exploring untapped opportunities. They also decided to set up industrial parks to
take the bilateral trade beyond existing US $ 65 billion annually. The two countries deliberated extensively on
economic engagement and agreed to intensify business and trade relations.
China is the biggest trading partner of India with bilateral trade stand at US $ 65 billion.
he World Bank on 11th June 2014 released Global Economic Prospects (GEP) Report and revised
downwards the economic growth forecast for developing world in 2014 to 4.8 percent from 5.3 percent
estimated in January 2014. It also highlighted that the growth in 2015 and 2016 at 5.4 and 5.5 percent,
respectively. In its forecast, the World Bank also claimed that developing nations should make economic

reforms to promote growth. In context of India the report claimed that weakness will be due to subdued
manufacturing activity and sharp slowing of investment in the country. Growth in India is projected at 5.5
percent in FY2014-15, accelerating to 6.3 percent in 2015-16 and 6.6 percent in 2016-17.

ndian Railways on 20 June 2014 increased the passenger fare by 14.2 percent in all classes and freight
charges by 6.5 percent. The revised rates will be effective from 25 June 2014.Under the passenger fare hike,
there was a flat 10 percent increase in all classes and an additional 4.2 percent increase under fuel adjustment
component (FAC)-linked revision scheme has been made. With this the Indian railways will be able to garner
Rs. 8000 crore annually through the pre-budget decision.
he Union Minister for MSMEs Mr. Kalraj Mishra on 16 June launched the Online Finance Facilitation
Centre which is an initiative by CII. It is with an objective to facilitate access to finance and credit for
SMEs. This centre will operate as a one-stop-shop, aggregating financing options for SMEs from various major
financial institutions. SME Members across India can easily access this facility online for their credit
requirement and it will facilitate the SMEs with documentation and preparation of bankable project proposals.
he World Bank has lowered India's GDP growth forecast to 5.5 per cent for 2014-15, from the earlier
forecast of 5.7 per cent. The World Bank report, however, said that India's growth would accelerate to 6.3
per cent in 2015-16, and 6.6 per cent in 2016-17.It attributed the acceleration in growth rate to rising global
demand, the expected rebound in domestic investment and pick-up in manufacturing activities.

Corporation Limited (NBCC) and Engineers India Limited (EIL). NBCC is a CPSE under the ministry of
urban development, whereas the EIL is a PSU under the ministry of petroleum and natural gas. The status came
into effect from June 23. NBCC became the 15th and EIL 16th Navratna Company amongst 250 Central Public
Sector Undertakings in the country. NBCC provides civil engineering construction services in wide gamut of
projects of varied nature, complexities and at socio-political geographical locations, both at home and overseas.
Engineers India Ltd (EIL) is one of the leading design and engineering organizations in South Asia. Established

n a major liberalization programme, the government on 26 June allowed manufacturing of several hundreds
of equipment and products in the defence sector without licence. Manufacture of products such as sub-
assemble items, components, castings, night-visions and surveillance would not require an industrial licence.
Simplifying the licensing process, a Commerce and Industry Ministry order listed four categories of products
that would require prior permission and freed the rest from any license condition. Industrial licences would now
be required only to make items such as tanks and other armored fighting vehicles; defense aircraft, spacecraft
and parts; warships of all kinds; and arms and ammunition and allied items of defence equipment, parts and
accessories. This is a major breakthrough which would enhance defense manufacturing in the country.
ir India on 24 June joined Star Alliance and the membership will help Air India gain nearly five percent
raises in its revenues. The board of the 26 Star Alliance members agreed to allow Air India into its fold at
a meeting held in London. Air India's revenue currently stands at around Rs.19,000 crore per annum, and it is
expected to rise 4-5 percent following the move. This increase is expected to take the overall revenue to about
Rs.23, 000 per annum. Air India became the 27th member after a wait of nearly seven years. Currently, most of
the passengers on Air India's flights to the US and Europe do not get connecting flights to other destinations
which are farther apart. This will change as other Star Alliance members will be able to provide single ticket
travel to these destinations on their flights.

ndian origin scientist Rasik Ravindra on 13th June elected as member of the UN's body that centres on
Oceans and Law of the Sea - UNCLCS. Ravindra was India's candidate for member of the Commission on
the Limits of Continental Shelf (CLCS). The selection of Rasik Ravindra was unanimous when he was elected
during the 24th Meeting of States Parties of the United Nations Convention on the Law of the Sea. Rasik
Ravindra is a graduate of the Jammu and Kashmir University, and has won many prestigious awards including
the National Award for Polar Sciences and Cryosphere in the year 2013 and National Mineral Award in the year
1990. He is among India's highly qualified scientists and has got wide experience of over four decades in
different domains of geosciences that includes geological studies in Antarctica, India and Bhutan.
The Commission on the Limits of Continental Shelf (CLCS) has 21 members, who are specialists in the
field of geophysics, geology, or hydrography, and are chosen for a term of five years by States Parties to
the Convention from among their nationals.
It is the UN body that has the authority to allocate new seabed territory to nations.
ndia on 9th June successfully test-fired the 290 km-range BrahMos supersonic anti-ship cruise missile from
the country's largest indigenous warship INS Kolkata off the coast of Karwar in Karnataka. The missile was
test-fired from INS Kolkata, which is a new ship under Project 15-Alpha series, off the coast of Karwar and all
the parameters were met during the test. The Mazagon Dockyards Limited-built INS Kolkata is yet to be
formally inducted into the Navy and will have the capability to launch 16 BrahMos missiles in one attempt
when it enters operational service.INS Kolkata is the first of its class of warships in the country and is
undergoing extensive trials before its planned induction into the Navy in July. The Navy has already deployed
BrahMos weapon systems on several of its warships including the Russian-origin Talwar Class vessels. The
missile has also been inducted into the Army and the Air Force and is being readied for firing from a Su-30MKI
combat aircraft. The Indo-Russian joint venture BrahMos Aerospace has developed several variants of the
missile for different kinds of warfare and is now developing a much-faster hypersonic version of the weapon
system.
ndia on 19 June successfully test fired the medium-range surface-to-air missile Akash on from a defense base
in Odisha. The indigenously developed missile, with a 27-km range and an effective ceiling of 15 km, was
test fired from the Integrated Test Range in Balasore district, 230 km from Bhubaneswar. The sophisticated
multi-function radar with built-in features tracked the low flying target continuously throughout its course. With
this flight trial, the Indian Army accomplishes all the validation trials on the first-off production models and the
system is being delivered for induction.
The 700-kg all-weather Akash missile can carry a 60-kg warhead at speeds of up to Mach 2.5. It can
operate autonomously and simultaneously engage and neutralise different aerial targets.
It can be launched from static or mobile platforms, enabling flexible deployment by the armed forces.

The Akash mobile air defence weapon system has been designed, developed and led to production by
DRDO.

esearchers from North western University and University of New Mexico have discovered our planet's
largest water reservoir 640 km beneath our feet - bound up in rock deep in the earth's mantle. Researchers
have found deep pockets of magma located beneath North America, a likely signature of the presence of water
at these depths. This water is not in a form familiar to us - it is not liquid, ice or vapour. This fourth form is
water trapped inside the molecular structure of the minerals in the mantle rock. The discovery suggests water
from the Earth's surface can be driven to such great depths by plate tectonics, eventually causing partial melting
of the rocks found deep in the mantle. The findings, published in the journal Science, will aid scientists in
understanding how the earth formed, what its current composition and inner workings are and how much water
is trapped in mantle rock.
giant Major Atmospheric Cherenkov Experiment (MACE) Gamma- Ray Telescope, which weighs
approximately 180 tones, designed, developed and manufactured by ECIL, Hyderabad for Bhabha Atomic
Research Centre (BARC), Mumbai, has undergone all the field trails successfully. Now it is going to install at
Hanle Site in Ladakh Region of Jammu and Kashmir. When installed, this MACE Telescope will be the second
largest Gamma-ray Telescope in the world and it would help the scientific community of the country to enhance
their understanding in the fields of Astrophysics, Fundamental Physics and Particle Acceleration Mechanisms.

he Justice Mudgal IPL Probe Committee on 7 June named former India captain -Sourav Ganguly to assist
the committee in its investigation into the betting and spot-fixing scandal in last year's Indian Premier
League. The Committee held its meeting in Mumbai on 7 and 8 June 2014.The committee has to submit its
report to the Supreme Court by August. The, retired chief justice of Punjab and Haryana High Court -- to probe
allegations of spot-fixing and betting against 13 people, including some cricketers who played the Indian
Premier League (IPL) 2013, and inaction thereon by Board of Control for Cricket in India president N.
Srinivasan. The other two members of the committee are L. Nageswar Rao (additional solicitor general of India)
and senior advocate Niloy Dutta.

The main highlight of the series was Stuart Binny taking six wickets for four runs in the second ODI, which is

ormer Captain of Bangladesh Mohammad Ashraful (29) on 18 June 2014 was banned for eight years by the
disciplinary panel set up by the Bangladesh Cricket Board. He was found guilty on four charges of fixing
matches in Bangladesh Premier League of 2013. Ashraful has also been ordered to pay a fine of one million
taka (12280 US dollar). He captained Bangladesh between 2007 and 2009 and played 23 T-20 internationals, 61
Tests, and 177 one-day internationals.
akistan Cricket Board (PCB) Chairman Najam Sethi elected to the newly-formed all powerful International
Cricket Council Executive Committee (ExCo) in Melbourne, Australia on 28th June. The Executive
Committee comprises five members with representations from India, England and Australia besides two others
with Pakistan being elected as the fourth and the West Indies as the fifth member of the committee. The ExCo
would comprise of a number of committees reporting to it and will deal with important matters like constitution,
anti-corruption, ethics, integrity, development and HR. This will be the core committee of ICC, which would
meet with as much frequency as required to assist and advise the ICC Board on operational, management and
administrative activities of ICC.
ndia will be hosting the World Junior Chess Championship and the Asian Youth Chess Championship this
year. The world event (boys and girls) will be held at Pune Oct 5-20, 2014 while the Asian meet for Under-
14, 16 and 18 will be held in New Delhi Nov 6-14, 2014. The decision to host these two major tournaments was
taken at the Annual General Body meeting of the All India Chess Federation (AICF) held in Chennai. The first

he National Games will be held in Kerala from J anuary 31-February 14, 2015. It is for the second time the
National games will be held in Kerala after a gap of 28 years. Indian Olympic Association (IOA) president
N. Ramachandran said the 35th edition of the National Games would be held in seven districts of the state. The
games would be held in 36 disciplines and would be participated by 10,000 athletes and officials.

Cricket (OC) becomes the 38th Associate Member of the ICC. However, Affiliate Membership of Brunei was
