Scenario:

Growing Old Gracefully is a monthly magazine on topical issues in the health and social care industry for staff
and service users, focusing especially on the elderly care group.
Your work experience with the Growing Old Gracefully magazine is coming to an end and you have been given
a final project about the development of the individual through the life stages. By way of thanks you for all your
hard work, you have been given the opportunity to work with a celebrity of your choice.

ASSIGNMENT 1 BRIEF












P1-Know stages of growth and development throughout the human lifespan.
TASK- Develop a fact file and life map describing the various life stages your chosen
celebrity might go through including pictures, graphs and charts to help you interpret the
information you collect about your celebrity.

Life stages: conception; pregnancy; birth and infancy 0-3 years; childhood 4-9 years; adolescence 10-18 years;
adulthood 19-65 years; older adulthood; 65+; the final stages of life.
Definitions: growth; development; developmental norms; developmental milestones; life course; maturation; life
expectancy
Development: holistic development; physical, intellectual, language, emotional and social at each life stage;
potential causes and effects of delayed and arrested development

M1- Discuss the nature-nurture debate in relation to the development of an individual.

TASK- You will need to research a range of arguments from both sides of the nature
nurture debate which you will compile into a report. In your report you should compare

starting school/nursery, beginning and changing employment, redundancy, bereavement,

TASK- In order to achieve P4, you will need in the first part of your report to explain two theories of
ageing such as disengagement and activity theory.
Theories of ageing, eg social disengagement, activity theory; application to current health and
social care provision

P5 Explain the physical and psychological changes which may be associated with ageing.
TASK- Write a report on your chosen celebrity as they grow older in your report explaining some of the
psychological and physical changes that could potentially affect your chosen celebrity in the future.

Make sure you use some creative thinking when consider different possibilities when looking at the
physical and psychological changes associated with ageing linking them to your chosen celebrity.
Physical changes: hormones; menopause; cardiovascular system, eg atherosclerosis, coronary
heart disease; respiratory system, eg emphysema, chronic obstructive pulmonary disease;
nervous system, eg motor neurone disease, degeneration of the sense organs, degeneration of
the nervous tissue, cognitive changes; muscular-skeletal, eg rheumatoid arthritis, osteoarthritis,
effects of degenerative disease, muscle wasting due to poor absorption of nutrients; skin, eg
loss of elasticity, effects of exposure to ultra violet rays, effects of smoking; the effects of
illnesses that are more common in ageing

Psychological changes: effects on confidence; effects on self-esteem; effects of ageism; effects
of, eg role changes, loss of a partner, retirement, increased leisure time, financial concerns,
culture, religion, beliefs;

M2 Discuss two major theories of ageing in relation to the development of the individual
TASK- To achieve M2 you need to discuss the degree to which your celebrity might disengage or stay
actively involved with social activities.
You might like to consider the role of continuity when you discuss disengagement and the activity
theory

M3 Discuss the effects on self-esteem and self- confidence of the physical changes associated
with ageing.

TASK- In order to achieve M3 you will need to expand on task 4cM2 and discuss how disengagement or
active involvement might affect your chosen celebrity self-esteem or self-confidence.
