shells.
What you ill not find in other beaches is the cultural enchantment, ranging from the
building to the local food. 6ne interesting !lace is four !raying !laces that stand side by side.
#s it form of multiculturalismE Who knos.
The most !rominent one is a building that looks like a tem!le ith ornaments of god statues
in hite color. The building as built in 2))3 to commemorate the arri&al of Braijaya V,
one of <aja!ahit's king, in Cgobaran. The !eo!le ho use the !lace are of Kejaan belief.
The name 'Kejaan' originates from the nickname of Braijaya V's son, namely Bondhan
Kejaan. The !erson ho built the building acknoledge to be the descendant of Braijaya
V and a!!ointed one !erson in the community to kee! this !lace.
Walking to the left side of the !raying !lace, you ill see -a&anese building, -oglo, hich is

#f you continue your ay in front of the joglo, you fill see a stone bo1 ith dry !lant on it.

!lace here Braijaya V !retended to burn himself. Fe took this ste! because he as not
illing to fight his son, %aden *atah ,the first King of "emak..
The truth of this story about Braijaya V is doubted by many historians. The reason is, if
%aden *atah attacked Braijaya V, it ill gi&e an image that #slam as s!read in a &iolent
ay. <any historians suggest that the e1isting historical e&idences do not sufficiently
conclude that %aden *atah made an attack. 7ou may search any information for further
assurance about it.
Some meters of the bo1 here the dry !lant gros there is a tem!le for Findu !eo!le to say

#n front of the dry !lant gros, there is a mos8ue ith the si/e of around 31= meters. The
mos8ue building is 8uite sim!le since the floor is of sands as if it unites ith the beach. What
is uni8ue is its direction. <ost of the mos8ues in #ndonesia face estards, but this mos8ue
faces southards. The front !art here the religious leader leads the !rayer is o!en so that it
directly sees the ocean. When 7og7+S asked local !eo!le about it, no one knos the reason.
They e&en get sur!rised because the founder of the mos8ue is a ell knon kyai of Cahdatul
$lama ho li&ed in *anggang, 2unung Kidul. ;or correct direction for those ho ant to
!ray in the mos8ue, local !eo!le make a sign on the all using red !encil.
5fter being astonished ith the religious site, you can get don to the beach. When you
come early in the morning, you ill see !eo!le take seaeed. They sell the seaeed at (,)))
to (,>)) %u!iah !er kilogram. They use the earnings for their daily li&es.
#f you come in the afternoon, hoe&er, you ill see !eo!le searching for sea urchin for their
side dish at their dinner. The s!ines of the sea urchin must be cut first then it is !ried using a
sickle. The meat inside of the sea urchin is then taken out. When searching for the sea urchin,
!eo!le usually bring bucket, coconut sie&e, sickle, and hat to !re&ent them from the sun.
The ingredients to cook sea urchin are salt and chilli. #t is then fried. Cot many !eo!le sell
this menu. They say that the meat is 8uite delicious. #f you really ant to ha&e a try, !lease
ask them to cook s!ecially for you. <aybe you ha&e s!ecial reci!e to cook sea urchin so that
it can be ser&ed as fa&ourite cuisine and increase society elfare.
#sn't it com!lete yetE There might not be other choices for the beach beauty, enchantment of
the !raying !laces, and tem!ting cuisine other than this beach. ,YogYES'C().

The meditation of Seno!ati that bore useful fruits caused many !eo!le to belie&e that any

hundreds of !eo!le from different classes and religions come to the !lace on certain days they

0ocated around 2: kilometers from the city center, *arangtritis Beach is also !art of the
Bueen of South's authority.
The naming of the beach has its on history. Fundreds years ago, someone named
"i!okusumo, ho as a fugiti&e of <aja!ahit Kingdom, came to this area to meditate. When
he sa ater dri!!ing from the crack of the coral reef, he named this area '!arangtritis',
originating from the ord parang ,stone. and tumaritis ,ater dro!s.. The beach close to the
area as then named the same.
*arangtritis is a beach full of myths, hich is belie&ed to be the manifestation of the unity
among <era!i <ountain, 7ogyakarta Kingdom, and *arangtritis Beach. The legend tells that
*anembahan Seno!ati and Sunan Kalijaga once met in this !lace after com!leting their
meditation. *anembahan Seno!ati as reminded of being a humble ruler des!ite his
su!ernatural !oers.
The !rimary attraction of this beach is its natural &ie. The enchantment of the coastal

Sadeng Beach, ,isiting the Estuary of the #ncient
Benga-an So!o .i+er
Bengaan Solo %i&er used to flo 8uietly from its u!!er course in the north area and em!ty
into Sadeng Beach that no is located in 2unung Kidul %egency. ;our million years ago,
hoe&er, a geological !rocess took !lace. The 5ustralia slab got under -a&a #sland, causing
the -a&a 0and to rise sloly. The course of the ri&er could not resist so that it turned
northards. The old line then dried since there as no floing ater anymore. This area is
rich in limestone hills that, according to some researches, used to be coral reefs under the
seaater.
Co, the e1 line of the ri&er that is !o!ular through the keroncong song entitled Bengaan
Solo created by 2esang becomes an interesting tourism object. #n addition to ser&ing as a
tourism object, Sadeng, hich as the estuary of the ri&er, is one of the biggest fish harbor in
7ogyakarta. Both of them become &aluable geological sites. 6nce, there as a tour !ackage

6n the ay to Sadeng, e can see some hundreds meters line of the 5ncient Bengaan Solo

The lo land that no functions as a field for local !eo!le to gro &egetables bends
beautifully as far as : kilometers northards *racimantoro area in Wonogiri %egency. The
bends are so tem!ting that our eyes ill ha&e to see them.
The ri&er line can also be e1!lored southards to its e1 estuary in Sadeng Beach. 6ne of the
fishermen told that the estuary of the 5ncient Bengaan Solo %i&er as on the east beach,
the area that currently is !art of the fish harbor. Conetheless, the e1!lore to the south is not as
beautiful as the one to the north because the line going to Sadeng Beach is not in the same
direction ith the flo of the biggest ri&er in -a&a.
When e get to beach, e ill see different scenery. The area of the beach also e1!eriences
changes like the line of the ri&er that no functions as &egetables field. Sadeng Beach no
functions as the most ad&anced fish harbor in 7ogyakarta. This can be seen from the
a&ailability of big motorboats, gas station, shelters for fishermen and fish auction center and
fishermen coo!erati&e.
The de&elo!ment of Sadeng as a fish harbor has its on story. 5round the year (9?3, a grou!
of fishermen from 2ombong, 3entral -a&a came to this !lace. They considered Sadeng to be
a !otential !lace to go sea. The challenges are 8uite hard, not only the big a&es but also
local !eo!le's belief forbidding !eo!le to go sea and the beach that is belie&ed to be mystical.
6ne of the fishermen, *airo, told 7og7+S that the fishermen from 2ombong belie&ed that
anyone could get into Sadeng Beach. Thus, anyone ho dares to li&e in Sadeng ill li&e.
;inally, more fishermen from 2ombong li&ed and made their li&ing ith their catches in that
!lace.
Since then, the area kee!s de&elo!ing. #n (9?A, a center for fish auction as built and a
harbor e8ui!!ed ith lighthouse to su!!ort the fishery acti&ities ere built. #n (9?9s, a
coo!erati&e for fishermen as formed. #n (99>, an office that took care of the catches that
also functions as a shelter for the transit fishermen as organi/ed.
We ill see the de&elo!ment of the fishery in Sadeng by &isiting all !arts of the beach. We
ill see fishermen cleaning their boats, carrying the fish to the acution center, grinding ice
cubes to be !laced in fish bo1 before being distributed, and a number of mothers taking car of
children in the shelter. 5ll !eo!le are busy ith fishery acti&ities.
Besides, e can also e1!lore the seashore in the eastern !art and head to the sand dune close
to the lighthouse. The scenery of the unlimited ocean ill look clearly. "ifferent from other
beaches in 2unung Kidul in general, Sadeng does not ha&e huge coral reefs so that our &ision
ill not be obstructed. Sometimes, you can see fishermen's boats are going to sea.
Visiting Sadeng is like itnessing an e&olution !rocess. 5long the ay, e can recall the
e&olution of the lo land of the 5ncient Bengaan Solo line from its time hen the ater
as still floing to the !resent condition here the line changes its function as a field here
local !eo!le gro &egetables. <eanhile, &isiting the beach seems like recall the beach that
used to be the estuary that as 8uiet and no it becomes the biggest fish harbor in
7ogyakarta.
Sepanjang, The (!d $uta Beach
#f you ant to enjoy the nostalgia of Kuta Beach in the !ast time, Se!anjang Beach is the
right !lace. Se!anjang has long coastal lines, clean ater sands, and medium a&es. 7ou can
just chooseD sun bathing under the bright sun, surfing, or just enjoy the beach beauty. 7ou can
enjoy all the things hen you come to the beach that lies some kilometers from Sundak
Beach.
Se!anjang Beach is one of nely o!ened beaches. The name ' Sepanjang' hich means 'long'
deri&es from the characteristic of the beach that has the longest coastal lines of all beaches in
2unung Kidul. The atmos!here of this beach is so natural. The seaside is decorated ith !alm
trees and huts roofed ith dry lea&es. The coral reef in the rise and fall of tides area is ke!t
ell. The dashes of a&es reflect blue color signaling uncontaminated sea ater. With such a
situation, it is not false if the local go&ernment and in&estors !lan to make this beach the
second Kuta Beach.
The natural atmos!here makes Se!anjang Beach su!erior to Kuta Beach. Se!anjang does not
offer such clichI things as beach cafI and lu1urious cottages, but closeness to nature. 7ou can
still dig out coral reef to find mollusk and starfish ,+chinodermata.. 7ou can also !ull out
seaeed from the coral. Foe&er, you must be careful in order not to stick the sea urchin's
s!ines. 7ou ill not find those all in Kuta, ill youE
The community sticks firmly to the coastal culture. Co !ermanent buildings alongside the
beach, only some huts here local !eo!le are li&ing. Still on the coastal area, there is field
here !eo!le !lant soy bean. The slo!e beach that is directly dashed by a&es !re&ents
!eo!le from going to sea. 0ooking at the back, there are to hills on hich &alley here
!eo!le !lant corn as their main food. The land on to! of the hill has been bought by an
in&estor to make &illa here &isitors can stay.
Se!anjang also has a historical site, namely Banyuse!uh. 'Banyu' means 'ater' and 'sepuh'
means to ash. Thus, the name means that the !lace that used to be a ater s!ring is used to
ash or to bathe. Those ho used the !lace ere #slamic !ious leaders ho ashed their
sacred ea!ons. 7ou must ask local !eo!le to locate this site. When 7og7+S came to the
!lace, there as only dry trash dam! ith ild !lants around it.
When you get tired, ha&e a rest. 0ocal !eo!le usually sell food and drink in the huts alongside
the beach. 7ou may sit on bamboo seat hile chatting and enjoying the ind of the sea.
7og7+S had the o!!ortunity to enjoy the cool eather under the hut. When daylight is
fading, look estards here the sun sets. 0ocal !eo!le ill armly elcome you to stay in
their house because there are no &illas yet.
;or the sou&enirs that you are going to take home, you do not ha&e to orry. 7ou do not ha&e
to take food as sou&enir, do youE Some !eo!le li&ing some kilometers from the beach make
handicrafts from seashell that then are sold by coastal !eo!le. +&en though it is not as
commercial as those in <alaysia, the handicrafts &ary. The sha!es are royal carriage, statue,
hair !inch or the dried ones and buried in hite sands. Some of them are !ainted. The !rice is
so fair, only fi&e thousand %u!iah each.
0o !rice does not necessarily mean lo &alue. Fandicrafts made from seashell ha&e
!recious historical &alue. #f you read articles or books on 3onchology <ollusca, you ill
kno that such handicrafts are of high culture de&elo!ing in coastal community. The !eo!le
in Faaii of the $nited States of 5merica, <elanesia islands, or <aori in Ce Jealand
de&elo! similar handicrafts. They set seashell to become necklace, !ant, belt, and car&e them
to make mar&elous fine arts.
#f you ha&e no budget for the sou&enirs, you can collect the seashell on the seaside. This
small thing becomes interesting !resent ith further !rocessing. Take a !iece of seashell and
!ut it into !lastic bag. 5rri&ing at home, buy some tobacco or mint and mi1 it ith alcohol
9)K. 5fter you soak it one night, take it and !olish it sloly. The !rocess ill eliminate the
lime layer on the seashell, lea&ing the central layer ,!rismatic layer.. *olishing ill make the
color of the seashell brighter.
#sn't it interesting to make a tour to Se!anjang BeachE What are you aiting forE 7ou can just
ride your motorcycle or ste! on the gas !edal of your car. 7ou do not ha&e to orry about the
stony road to this !lace since the beauty of nature and culture you are going to enjoy !ay for
it. Trust me, it !ays e&erything and you ill agree to a tourist from the Cetherlands saying,
HThis is the real ne Kuta. There are many beaches here and there ha&e been so many tourists
in BaliG the beach here is so 8uiet, so enjoyable.H ,YogYES'C().
Sundak Beach, Dog and Sea &rchin Fight -hich .esu!t a
B!essing
Sundak Beach does not only ha&e enchanting natural &ie but it also kee!s story. The name
Sundak turns to e1!erience e&olution of hich e&idences can be traced geologically.
#n order to kno its e&olution, &isitors must kno first the condition the sea sides of Sundak
Beach in the !ast and at !resent time. 5t the est side of the beach there is a mos8ue and a
&acant s!ace that is no utili/ed as a !arking area. 6n the east side, there is a ca&e made of
coral reef as high as around (2 meters. +ntering the ca&e, there is a s!ring from hich local
!eo!le get fresh ater.
Before (93) the abo&e area as still under sea ater. The story tells that sea ater reached
the area here the mos8ue stands no and the ca&e as submerged in sea ater. #n line ith
geological !rocess in the south sea, the sea ater le&el decreased and sea ater stood out
more to the sea. The coral reef and the area around the mos8ue became ne land that later
coastal !eo!le used it for economy acti&ities until today.
There as uni8ue, natural !henomenon of the acti&ity that finally ser&ed as starting !oint of
naming this beach. When rainy season came, there as much ater from the land floing to
the sea. 3onse8uently, the land on east side of the beach s!lit to make a ri&er4look form. The
floing ater looked like s!litting the sand. When dry season came, the cre&ice disa!!eared
since the sea ater came ashore and drag aay the sand. The name Wedibelah ,the s!lit sand.
originated from this natural !henomenon. When 7og7+S &isited the !lace, the cre&ice did
not e1ist.
Tens of years later the name changed. #n (9:A, there as an interesting occurrence. #n an
afternoon, there as a dog running about the seaside and entered the ca&e here it met a sea
urchin. Being star&ing, the dog tried to !rey on the sea urchin but the sea urchin a&oided.
Then, the fight ha!!ened and finally the dog succeeded in eating half of the sea urchin body
and the dog got out of the ca&e !roudly. The oner of the dog, 5rjasangku, sa half of the
sea urchin body as still in the dog's mouth. Since then, the name Wedibedah as changed
into Sundak as an abbre&iation of asu ,-a&anese language for dog. and landak ,-a&anese
language for sea urchin..
The 8uarrel turned to bring fortune for local !eo!le. 5fter being short of ater for years, local
!eo!le finally found a s!ring. #nitially, the oner of the dog as astonished that his dog as
soaking et after getting out of the ca&e. The hy!othesis as that there as a s!ring inside
the ca&e and the dog might fall in it hile hunting the sea urchin. 5fter some in&estigations,
the !rediction turned out to be true. Co, the s!ring functions as source of fresh ater for
local inhabitants. *i!es are no installed from the ca&e to distribute ater to the community.
The finding of the s!ring consoled the community ho ere disa!!ointed because the ells
that they dug ere inundated by sea ater.
-ust imagine the condition of the area hundreds of years ago hen e kno its condition in
(93)s. There had to be many organisms that utili/ed the loer !art of the coral reef that no
functions as a ca&e. ;or the reason, many archeologists belie&e that as the conse8uence of the
occurring geological !rocess, there ere many sea organisms ere left and !iled u! as
fossils. Cot many researches re&eal hat fossils e1ist in the area.
#n addition to offering its silent historical itnesses, Sundak also offers enjoyable night
atmos!here. 7ou can enjoy the bree/e of the night ind hile ordering fresh fish to be grilled
together ith your friends. 7ou only ha&e to !ay some thousands %u!iah for the fireood. #f
you are reluctant to do so, just order ready4to4eat grilled fish. To s!end the night, you can just
slee! anyhereG you can !ut u! your tent or just lying on the bench of food sellers that are
not used at night. "arkness can sometimes be more enjoyable than brightness. "on't orry
about it.
#f you ant it, interact ith local !eo!le can be &aluable enlightenment. 7ou can understand
ho !eo!le li&e their li&es, their culture, and they might change your life !oint of &ie. To
see 2rand!a Tugiman ho usually kee!s the !arking area or 2rand!a 5rjasangku can be
another o!tion. They are e1am!les of the leaders of Sundak Beach. To ha&e a talk ith them
does not only make you merely see the history itnesses but it enables you get direct story
from the itnesses of ho the story as car&ed. *lease come, they all are aiting for youL

The imagination of &ery ide, hite4sand beach that enables you to see different angles of
the beach ill rise hen you hear the mention of Wediombo ,wediMsand, omboMide. Beach.
Conetheless, Wediombo Beach actually does not ha&e such ide s!read of sands. The est
and east !arts of the beach are !lanked by coral hills so that the s!read of the sands is not as
ide as the one in *arangtritis, 2lagah, and !ossibly Kuta beaches.
#n fact, local !eo!le tell that the name of this beach that as gi&en by the !redecessors does
not re!resent the real situation. Some !eo!le say that more a!!ro!riate name for this beach is
Teluk Ombo ,The Wide Bay., since the beach looks like a ide bay. There are to flanking
coral hills ith the seaater !rotrudes to the land but it is ider that common bays.
5!art from the ina!!ro!riate name, hoe&er, Wediombo still !ro&ides e1traordinary beach

originating from the fishing habit of local !eo!le is !o!ular ith fishing hobbyists from
7ogyakarta and Wonogiri. The main objecti&e is, according to local !eo!le to 7og7+S, to
catch big fish.
#t is not easy to reach the fishing location at the to! of the coral cliff. We ha&e to alk

hit us before arri&ing at the cliff that directly faces the dee! ocean. ;or those ho ha&e been
familiar ith the route, it ill take them one4hour alk.
The difficult ay to the cliff, hoe&er, is !aid ell. Big fish are sometimes caught by the
hobbyists. 5t least they ill catch fish that local !eo!le name it !anjo fish. The fish of hich
si/e is as big as man's arm are of to kinds, the cylindrical one that e1ist more during dry
