Optm-izer

The closed-loop solids control you need, in a mobile unit

that saves time, labor and installation costs
Increasingly stringent environmental
regulations and restrictions that are
shrinking the footprint of land-based
drilling operations are challenging
operators daily. They must design modern,
mobile, and more efficient drilling rigs;
specify environmentally protective
drilling fluids; and establish smaller, more
compact drilling locations.
With most of the focus being put on key
contractors services, little has been done
to improve the mobility, footprint, and
efficiency of the solids-control equipment.
This is the very equipment that is required
for land-based rigs to cost-effectively
manage drilling operations on zero-
discharge, closed loop locations.
M-I SWACO has answered this challenge
by developing the OPTM-IZER system for
those operators who require a highly
efficient, self-contained, flexible, and
mobile closed-loop package.
In just two hours, your
operation can have the
automated solids-control
solution you need
10-inch flange flowline
Applications
Land-based drilling operations
that require barite recovery,
high-capacity processing,
dewatering and/or mud stripping.
Problems
Most land rigs are not equipped to
perform specialized solids-control
operations and do not require these
capabilities while drilling the entire well.
Solutions
The M-I SWACO OPTM-IZER* unit is a
mobile, closed-loop system that can
work standalone or as a supplement to
rig shakers. It can move in, rig up and
be operating on location within two
hours of arrival.
Economics
Among its benefits are increased solids-
removal efficiency; lower mobilization,
transportation and installation costs;
reduced manpower requirements; no
crane picks; and lower drilling-waste
disposal costs.
Environmental
Better solids removal reduces dilution
and waste volumes. Fully-variable-
speed-centrifuge technology lower the
percentage of liquid on cuttings, while
the entire OPTM-IZER package is fully
contained to avoid any liquid/solid spills.
Features

Three processing modes

Fully-variable-speed-centrifuge
technology, from single centrifuges
to dual big-bowl packages

Automatic level control and
automation package

Available in 9-ft, 10-ft and 12-ft widths

All-inclusive single-load, closed-loop
package solution

Self-contained spill protection

Optional cold-weather package
Benefits

Increased ROP and solids-removal
efficiency

Reduced fluid consumption and
water hauling

Lower drilling-waste disposal and
trucking costs

Lower personnel costs than other
closed-loop operations

None of the crane picks associated
with closed-loop installations

Single-load solution reduces
road traffic
Three processing modes to
match your drilling goals
High-volume
Drilling fluid is drawn from the rig via the
6-in. suction line and into two fully-
variable-speed-centrifugal feed pumps
inside the pump room. They, in turn, move
the fluid to the two fully-variable-speed-
centrifuges. These are mounted atop the
pump room so that the solids can discard
into the catch-tank portion of the trailer
while the liquid effluent returns to the tanks
mounted below, inside the pump room.
The effluent then returns to the rig via a
separate fully-variable-speed centrifugal
pump at the same rate as the fluid
entering the tanks, in accordance with
the automation package controls and
PLC-panel settings.
Dewatering
This mode is almost the same as high-
volume processing, but with an additional
chemical-injection line tapped into both
centrifuge feed pumps: 3-in. static mixers
mounted directly to the discharge flange
of the feed pumps. Drilling fluids are
flocculated on the fly while flowing
toward the centrifuge-feed piping.
Clear-water effluent is piped directly
into the effluent tank for immediate,
metered return to the rig via the automation
package and level controls.
The flocculated solids are discarded
directly into the trailers catch tank.
Barite-recovery
Operators now switch the centrifugal
feed pumps from parallel operation
(feeding both centrifuges with rig mud) to
series operation. In series, #1 centrifuge
processes rig mud in low speed operation,
and the effluent returns to the polishing
tank so it can be polished through the #2
centrifuge in high-speed/high-G mode).
The barite recovered from the #1
centrifuge passes directly into the slurry
tank mounted in the pump room, along
with the polished effluent from the #2
centrifuge. The barite and polished effluent
will be mixed together and pumped back to
the rig tanks.
Mobile closed-loop system
Ready to work in
two hours or less
Easy transport design
With its mobile design, the OPTM-IZER
unit can move in, rig up and be operating
on location within two hours of arrival.
The driver backs in the OPTM-IZER package
below the rig flow line, shakers and/or
drying equipment so that all solids discard
from the flow line can drop directly into the
catch tank on the trailer.
