Description: This course covers introductory statistical concepts including descriptive

statistics, probability, the properties of discrete and continuous random variables,
sampling theory, hypothesis testing, and analysis of variance, simple and multiple
regression analysis, Chi-Square tests and application of these concepts in business and
management.
Course Objectives: The student will use a variety of fundamental statistical principles
integrated with business applications. The student will select, apply and interpret the
statistical technique, which is most appropriate for effectively solving the specific
management problem presented.
Required textbook:
Business Statistics: A First Course 2/e by Sharpe/De Veaux/Velleman edition with
MyStatLab
You will be required to have access to MyStatLab throughout the course for software and
additional study resources. MyStatLab will be accessed from within your ELMS Canvas
account. Therefore you will only have two options for purchasing the access to the
required MyStatlab.
Option 1) The bookstore
a) Print book with mystatlab access code
b) 3-hole punched book with the mystatlab code
c) mystatlab with ebook access code
Option 2) Direct online purchase
Purchase can be made direct online from within your ELMS Canvas course (First time
you log in and click on Course Home) and the access will only be for the mystatlab
access with electronic version of the book. If you choose this option you cannot get the
hard copy of the book, unless you purchase a separate book that will cost you more.

Again access to mystatlab is accessed from within canvas and therefore the options to
purchase access are the two listed above.
Here is the step to follow:
The first time you login to ELMS Canvas for your course and click on Course Home you
will then be prompted- to either enter an access code (that was purchased from the
bookstore) or to purchase now.

Course Website
The course website is hosted in the Canvas course environment http://elms.umd.edu .
A university LDAP ID and password are required to access Canvas courses. For more
info see https://ldap.umd.edu/cgi-bin/chpwd. Please maintain your current e-mail
address in TESTUDO as Canvas uses this address to send course related e-mail. (Since email addresses are imported from TESTUDO into canvas, and you need to use this email
address to receive important messages or announcements sent from your instructors and
other community messages).
Classroom Policies: The minimum expectation is that the student will complete
homework or reading assignments prior to the class session and will be prepared to
participate in or lead discussions as directed by the instructor. Attendance by university
policy is not mandatory, however excessive absences are discouraged, because class
participation is essential to the assimilation of this course, and absences make it almost
impossible for a student to meet the academic objective.
The student is responsible for obtaining, personally or from a colleague, notes on class
lectures or discussion and the nature and due dates of assignments as presented in class.
Students are expected to take all examinations and to complete all weekly assignments on
the required date. Make up exams or late assignments may be completed only by showing
acceptable excuse and discretion of the instructor.
Special Needs: Any student with special needs should bring this to my attention as soon
as possible, but not later than the second week of class.
Software: We will be using StatCrunch, which comes with MyStatLab. It is an online
user-friendly piece of software that can be accessed from within your Canvas course.
Calculator: A scientific or graphing calculator is necessary for all chapters and will be
used the whole semester.
Exams: Both Mitterm-1 and Midtem-2 will be held during class time. The final exam
will be held on designated date, time and place by university. These tests evaluate the
students ability to solve problems much like the assigned homework and exercises. The
Midterm-2 and Final exams are loosely cumulative, meaning they will not contain
specific questions from previous material but assume students understand the previous
material.

Exercises:
I will assign a set of problems from the textbook and MyStatLab every week. These
exercises are to be done individually. There will be no grade given for the weekly
exercises. But it is almost impossible to recognize multistage applications and interpret
the complicated outcomes without practicing.
Graded Homework:
Graded homework (GHW) is assigned from some of the chapters throughout the semester. There
will be eight homework total. This homework is intended for the student to become more familiar
with the concepts that are covered in lectures and in the text. Homework may be discussed with
other members of the class, however, each person must prepare and hand-in his/her own work.
Homework is to be presented in a neat, orderly fashion in a manner that would be presentable to a
supervisor on a job. Please staple any multiple sheets together. Please ensure your name is on the
homework. Homework is due at the beginning of the class period. Homework will be graded
between zero and hundred points. Homework may be turned in after class on due date by

4 PM. No exceptions for any reason will be granted to this policy. If you will miss class
for any reason, please email it to me by the due date by 4 PM, either by Word document
or PDF format. Please remember picture is not acceptable.
There will be 8 homework total and the best 7 of the 8 homework will be counted.
The graded homework is worth 10% of the final grade.
Assignment: The Assignments goal is to learn actively by applying the theoretical and
practical tools learned in class. Each individual will work on their own assignment
throughout the semester. The three Assignments will be posted after First, Second exam
and the day before Thanksgiving. The due dates are given at the bottom of the syllabus in
Course outline section. The three assignments are worth 10% of the final grade.
Academic Integrity and Intellectual Standards:
The Robert H. Smith School of Business fosters an environment of academic integrity
and development of thoughtful and sound analysis. Faculty and students will hold each
other accountable to meeting intellectual standards including demonstrating clarity of
thought, articulating statements based on evidence, presenting relevant arguments, and
engaging in logical reasoning. By adhering to these standards, students will develop
essential critical thinking skills to be demonstrated in both their oral and written work.
The University's Code of Academic Integrity is designed to ensure that the principles of
academic honesty and integrity are upheld. All students are expected to adhere to this
Code. The Smith School does not tolerate academic dishonesty. All acts of academic
dishonesty will be dealt with in accordance with the provisions of this code. Please visit
the following website for more information on the University's Code of Academic
Integrity: www.shc.umd.edu
On each assignment you will be asked to write out and sign the following pledge.
"I pledge on my honor that I have not given or received any unauthorized assistance on
this exam/assignment."

Smith School recommended GPA targets for Undergraduate courses:

GPA of 2.8 in the 200-level core courses;
GPA of 3.1 in the 300-level core courses;
GPA of 3.3 for non-core courses;
These GPA targets should allow us to award grades that reflect the University-wide
standards for each letter grade.
