INTRODUCTION
Among the registered nurse only few percentage are male nurse. Many
people asks men practicing in the profession are you a male nurse instead of asking
are you a nurse? Every professional nurse position and every nursing educational
opportunity shall be equally available to those meeting the entry qualifications
regardless of gender (American Assembly for men in Nsg)
HISTORY
Florence nightingale achievement in establishing modern nursing was
remarkable for two reasons:
She establishes the science of nursing
She overcomes extreme social pressure for women to conform to Victorian mores that
segregated the saxes.
Nightingale unfornted and successfully overcome, social barriers that excluded women
of from participating in non-domestic economic. Men are not new to the profession of
nursing. They supplied much of the nursing care during the eleventh, twelth and
thirteenth centuries. It was not until late nineteenth century that nursing become
predominantly female profession.
The industrial revolution also influenced the exit of men from nursing. During those
times, the accepted professions for men were science, technology and business. Men
Choose medicine and women chose nursing.
The first two school of nursing for men were established in the late 1800. They were
the mills school of nursing for men at NEW YORKS Bellevue hospital and Mc lean
Asylum Training school.

SELECTIVE SERVICE AND MILITARY
A major factor explaining the relative paucity of men in nursing involved in
the military. During world war, it is apparent that available nurses could not meet the
needs of both civilian and military population of patient. As men were combatants in the
war, the major recruitment of nurses during that period involved women.
The US Army nurse corps was established in 1901, especially for women.
Kalish and Kalish wrote the effect of war and of selective service was practically to wipe
out the enrollment of men in schools of nursing.
2

The situation for men during world war was identical at the outbreak of the
Second World War. Men who were nurses found themselves bearing arms and driving
earthmovers rather than caring for the ill and injured. Men in nursing were very well
serve people.
For nearly all of its II year history the men nurses section was concerned
with equal treatment and adequate salaries for men and women nurses in the US
Armed forces.
The ANA recognized in 1952 and the men nurses section, in support of
the reorganization voted itself out of existence. Edward Lyon became the first
registered nurse commissioned an officer in the Army Nurse corps on October 6,
1955.The legislation facilitating equal treatment of men and women nurses in the
military was introduced by the representative from ophio, Frances Payne Bulton nearly
30% of the registered nurses in the Army Nurse corps are men.
ECONOMIC CYCLE
Another major force having on impact on men in the nursing profession
was the economy. After world war, number of men admitted in nursing was slow to
increase. During 1920, the salaries for nurses were not competitive. The pay nurses
received, from World War II to 1970, was against a barrier to men entering nursing. The
new prospective payment system and the increased availability of nurses are likely to
depress and therefore temper the recent increases in enrollment of men
NURSING AS WOMENS WORK
In our culture, most people see human behavioral characteristics as being
feminine or masculine. Women who display masculine characteristics and men who
display feminine characteristics are unusual. Cultural predispositions tend to reinforce
sex.
Research on men in nursing indicates that most men nurses have been
influenced by a living role model who encouraged their entry into the nursing profession.
AMERICIAN ASSEMBLY FOR MEN IN NURSING
One way to increase the proportion of men nurses in America is to be
visible and to support nursing as a satisfying and rewarding profession. To achieve
visibility, the American Assembly for men in nursing was organized in 1971 by Dennis
Martin of Michigan. The independent group of nurses formerly known as the National
male Nurse Association, as several hundred members in nearly every state of the
Union. The objectives of the organization were restated in 1981 when the association
was renamed.

Men and bodies, in the United States are encouraged to become nurses and join
together with all nurses in strengthening and human kind health care for
Americans.
Men who are now nurse are encouraged to grow professionally and to
demonstrate to each other and to society, the increasing contributions made by
men within Nursing.
The American Assembly for men in Nsg intends that its members be full
participants in the Nsg profession and its organ nation and use this Association
to achieve the Limited goals skated above.
WHY MEN ENTER NURSING
Traditionally, men tend to choose aggressive area of Nursing, such as
intensive care units, cardiac care units, emergency departments, trauma units, flight
nursing or anesthesiology. The choices may also be due to a fear of being rejected in
traditionally, Feminine, areas of Nsg, such as pediatric and obstetric Nsg or because
they support a masculine identity.
The typical dress in some area may affect practice choice of men. Nurses
in acute care secularities typically wear scrubs or street cloths may be more
acceptable to men than traditional white Nursing uniforms.
ATTITUDE TOWARDS MEN IN NURSING
One negative assumption men in Nsg encounter is that male nurses have
problem with sex role identity. The pervasive homophobia in society and the belief that
Nsg is strictly a famine profession, these attitudes are still pervasive enough to affect
the decisions of teenage boys making career choices.
Another issue men deal with is denial of the fact that men can be nurses,
people commonly assume a man delivering health care is either and physician or a
medical student.

There are some hidden advantages for men in nsg discussed by Williams in 1995.
Men are preferred in hiring because of their strength and perceived potential for better
leadership. Men are given more respect and encouraged to increase their education
and enter the most prestigious specialization. Men tend to earn more money that their
female counter parts in Nsg and that married male nurses are viewed as the traditional
breadwinners of their families and are considered more permanent reliable employees.

ENCOURAGING MEN TO ENTER NURSING
Bough recommends the following strategies .
Correct public Misconceptions about males capacity for doing caring work such
as nursing
Re-educate high school guidance counselors to target appropriate populations
for the rigors of Nsg education and Nsg practice not previously
Involve male student in recruitment efforts and make them visible in recruitment
materials.
Encourage national occupation publications to present nonsexist information
regarding career options for males.
Encourage editors of professional; journals and others literature to portray male
in advertisements depicting nursing.
The increasing number of men in Nsg will make the profession
different. This should be seen as a positive trend, for both feminine and masculine
qualities and abilities are needed to strengthen the profession and to treat whole human
beings.
