Introduction
The unname! school is situate! in a small *aribbean islan!% an! is the setting )or this project
proposal' The school has a stu!ent population o) 2$+ stu!ents, -&. males an! $/. )emales' The
stu!ents are o) varying nationalities, $$. are natives% /2. 0aitians% )ive percent Dominicans%
)our percent 1amaicans% t2o percent A)ricans% one percent (uyanese% an! one percent
3ahamian' The sta)) consists o) 1& traine! teachers inclu!ing the hea! teacher an! the vice4
principal' /$. o) the sta)) has been through un!ergra!uate stu!ies 2hile the others have
!iplomas or certi)icates in teacher training' 25. o) the sta)) is on t2o or three year6s contract'
3y )ar% the most common metho! that is use! in the classrooms to !eliver instruction is the
7chal8 an! tal8'9 "tu!ents are har!ly involve! in han!s4on:practical activities that re)er to tas8
that simulate real42orl! challenges' "tu!ents are not provi!e! 2ith that technology rich learning
environment in 2hich they can construct 8no2le!ge )or themselves' ;)ten times% they just sit in
their classes as empty vessels 2aiting to be )ille!% 2ith 78no2le!ge'9 Even 2hen some o) them
move on to the high school% the teachers complain that they !on6t cope 2ell because they are not
able to generate% !iscover an! buil! their o2n )rame2or8 o) 8no2le!ge'
Need for a smart classroom
There is a gro2ing concern that teachers nee! to provi!e e!ucational opportunities that are
geare! to2ar! preparing the stu!ents to succee!% in a technology rich society' It has become
increasingly more evi!ent that the teachers o) this institution must 7retool9 )or the bene)it o) the
stu!ents6 success' The chal84an! tal8 metho! must be replace! by a more active an! creative process%
one in 2hich teachers !esign an! )acilitate activities that are geare! to2ar!s collaborative e<ercises'
At present% the school is sta))e! 2ith one in)ormation technology teacher 2ho has !one a 2orth2hile
job in ma8ing sure that the stu!ents are taught as e))ectively as possible but this is not a!e=uate' No
technology training programs are presently o))ere! to the teachers' The reality is that% the resources at

the school are not a!e=uate to e=uip the teachers 2ith the 8no2le!ge% s8ills an! e<pertise nee!e! to
success)ully integrate technology in the teaching learning process'

technology rich pro)essional !evelopment activities% starting this summer% )un! the installation o) a
smart classroom )or teachers% an! stu!ents% pay an instructional !esigner to con!uct a summer
2or8shop by assisting the teachers in success)ully integrating technology in their lessons% an!
!evelop an instructional technology integrate! curriculum'
The project6s mission% is to provi!e a technology rich climate in 2hich stu!ents% teachers%
an! the community 2or8 together to achieve e<cellence% an! promote intellectual e<ploration%
thus enhancing learning' This is in compliance 2ith the school6s mission 7to strive to2ar!s the
total !evelopment o) each chil! by creating an environment that encourages aca!emic
e<cellence% an! nurtures the in!ivi!ual6s interest% talents% character an! civil min!e!ness'9
Goals and objectives for this project
The primary goal )or this project is to provi!e instructional technology training an! support
)or teachers% as 2ell as% to help stu!ents to be e=uippe! to live an! 2or8 in the technological era'
To achieve this goal% the unname! school teachers 2ill !evelop the technological s8ills nee!e! in
or!er to )ully integrate instructional technology in the curriculum an! help their stu!ents to use
active mental processes to construct meaning an! 8no2le!ge' The teachers 2ill trans)orm their
teaching an! turn their classrooms into learning communities 2here stu!ents6 participation an!
interaction are high' The use o) virtual )iel! trips% simulations% games an! other han!s on
activities 2ill provi!e stu!ents 2ith the opportunity to construct their o2n 8no2le!ge an! relate
2hat they have learnt to every!ay li)e e<periences'

The project 2ill be un!erta8en by a planning team comprise! o) teachers% school boar!
members% an! persons )rom the private sector un!er the gui!ance o) the technology sta)) an! the
principals' The team 2ill assist 2ith space% e=uipment% an! ven!ors6 i!enti)ication' They 2ill
also !evelop plans )or implementation% maintenance% time line% smart classroom sche!uling
usage% an! reservation policies' The team 2ill also monitor proper a!herence o) purchasing
proce!ures an! bu!get compliance' Parent representatives 2ill be involve! as partners in the
e!ucation process by utili@ing their s8ills an! 8no2le!ge to support the !evelopment an!
implementation o) the project'
The smart classroom
The smart classroom 2ill be use! to create ne2 opportunities )or learning an! to promote
stu!ent achievement' This 2ill re=uire the assistance o) the teachers to integrate technology into
the curriculum% align it 2ith their stu!ents learning goals% an! use it )or engage! learning
projects'
Professional development and curriculum
Termly instructional technology pro)essional !evelopment 2or8shop opportunities beyon!
basic computing s8ills 2ill be provi!e! )or the teachers' any o) the teachers !o not have the
technical 8no2le!ge or s8ills to recogni@e the potential )or technology in teaching an! learning'
1ust 8no2ing ho2 to use a computer is not enough' Instea!% the teachers 2ill be provi!e! 2ith
2ell4planne!% ongoing% instructional technology pro)essional !evelopment programs that are tie!
to the schoolAs curriculum goals% !esigne! 2ith built4in evaluation% an! sustaine! by a!e=uate

ho2 to use them' Teachers 2ill be re=uire! to !esign technology rich lessons an! participate in

con!uct the summer 2or8shop% an! assist teachers in the !evelopment o) the curriculum% an!
technology rich lessons an! activities' The in)ormation technologist 2ill be assigne! !i))erent
roles an! responsibilities such as provi!ing technical support% an! maintaining the school6s
net2or8 system' Teachers 2ill be re=uire! to implement the propose! curriculum in the ne2
